You wander down to the basement or your hobby room and begin cleaning and straightening out things and realize.......YOU HAVE TOO MUCH

I did that last night around 9pm. I crawled out of that at 2:45 am, just overwhelmed. What I saw would make my avatar shake in his boots,

In no certain order things that need to be done....

make a second game board (better quality than first one)
sort out 10+ flip cases of bits
trim and paint 10 landspeeders for RW
trim and paint Ultramarines battle company
trim and paint 2 DW land raiders, which will lead to about 2-3 more
trim and paint a TON of CoD terrain
trim and paint and magnetize Tyranid army
trim and paint 3 dreadnoughts for DW army
trim and paint 3+ boxes of AoBR
magnetize all bases of my RW/DW army for storage case(s)
figure out what the hell I'm going to do with an extra 350 marines on sprue

Tell me your horror stories

I would like to point on that this has been in his basement for years, or his storage shed! This is just pure lazyness on his part. No offense to the old man(and yes, he is OLD) haha, but he needs to get off his dakka dakka posting spree and get to work! plain and simple. Ask him if any of this stuff is true, and the answer is YES! Especially the part about him being old, well Old and bald!!! HAHAHAHA

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Wow. And I thought my 'build pile' was bad. I've got a big box that has almost 2 cities worth of CoD stuff, a couple of FW Super-Heavies, numerous Tyranid units that I've yet to complete, and an 8000 point Necron army.

But none of that really compares to all that stuff.

Friend of mine has a similar lot to that, or did, but most of its build now. He has about 5-7 Companies of Marines, and had hundreds of them off the sprues and in bits boxes, along with about 100 de-sprued Terminators. It was crazy.

We have 'build days' every now and again where we all get together and churn through our backlog of stuff (actually having one next weekend as a matter of fact), and when people didn't have anything to build, they'd help him out, de-spruing and cleaning mould lines. We started calling them 'Sprue Thralls'.

I forgot the 84 Berserkers that need paint.

It's not so much the amount of what I have. It's the despair of knowing the amount of time needed to finish it all.

I played random007 tonight and he traded some Ork bits to me. So an Ork army is on horizon.

The great blackhole that most fall into is wanting more and doing less.

I have every intention of finishing everything, but what to start on is the question. Probably going to do terrain.

On the shrink wrapped stuff.... I sell bits and that was yesterdays purchase. That tall stack is stuff I need to snip off sprue and bag up.

Not all the boxes are full. Gray box under table is empty boxes.

I'm not sickened enough to give it away though

Welcome to the Cult of the Keeper, Brother.

A brief history of The Keeper

A few hundred years ago the Cult of The Keeper of Lead would have been counted as heresy, and it's followers hunted down and dealt with mercilessly. Luckily we live in more enlightened times and the mysteries of the Keeper are gradually becoming better known and understood. The evolving mythos of the Keeper is sometimes referred to within the community. Perhaps all you need to know is that The Keeper is the unofficial god of wargaming........

Theories on the importance of buying more figures than we could ever possibly hope to paint:

Theory One is that it is to keep the earth from becoming unbalanced and wobbly - the lead figures should be equally spread round the world, so if one of us has loads of figures, everyone else needs more of them.

Theory Two is that The Keeper does not allow a wargamer to die until all his/her figures are painted. Immortality can therefore be achieved by making sure you have plenty of figures in stock. In practice most people just insure for the next few years with their current lead mountain..

Theory Three is that in case of nuclear attack you can bury yourself under your figures and the lead content will mean that you will be safe from fall-out radiation.

Don't act so surprised. I mean, out of the 12K of Ultramarines, 12K of Tyranids, 30K of Chaos, 30K of Guard, 8K of Necrons, almost every Necromunda gang there is, a Blood Bowl Orc Team, two sets of Warhammer Quest, 250 BattleTech 'Mechs and over 100 BattleTech tanks, the following is painted (from what I remember):

About 40 Ultramarines (assorted bolters, Sergeants, special and heavy weapons)
Half an Assault Squad (out of 5 Assault Squads)
Ultra Dread.
Ultra Land Raider (the old RT-era Land Raider)
Ultra Land Raider (the current one)
Ultra Land Speeder
Ultra Vindicator
2 Ultra Bikes
Marneus Calgar (the old one)
Captain (old RT-era Ultra Captain)
Chaplain
About 5 Terminators (of about 100 or so)
1 Squad of Tallarns (out of more than 400 infantry)
A single Mordian.
1 Leman Russ
About half my Redemptionists (so about 10 models)
A Carnifex (old Screamer Killer, made of lead, doubles as brass knuckles during rules arguments)
8 H-Gaunts (old metal ones)
3 Tyranid Warriors (old plastic ones)
4 Necron Warriors
2 Scarab Bases
1 Destroyer

I think that's it.

As I said, don't be surprised. I don't like painting at all.

And this is why it is useful to conduct the irregular inventory of stuff. It is always illuminating to see what you have, vs what you want or "need".

Then you don't end up with so much excess stuff, which translates into less time dealing with stuff that doesn't contribute to active gaming, and more time dealing with stuff that does.

Right now, my backlog (more-or-less) "fits" into 4 bale-sized boxes for printer/copier paper. Being spread across several gaming systems, I consider this acceptable, but really should knuckle down on a couple projects to drive them to closure...

OLD MAN ULTRAMARINES' BASEMENT

I would also like to point out that though, an orc army is in the mix for him, so is his battle company of space marines, his bug "god" army, oh, yeah, plus all the terrain, making a new table, reading rules...yada yada yada. ultramarine doesn't know when to stop adding to his list. Also, he has NEVER been the "charitable" type of person. I have known him for the better part of 8 years now, and I can't even recall one time that he gave anything away. I have offered him help on starting these "projects" but of course the stubborn old doesn't take it. So everytime I see him, I am gonna just add more and more to his list of to do. I want him to custom build Wazdakka, and then he and I have to make a HUGE orc fortress. Simple things like that. But since he likes to look at the stuff and be dumb founded, well nothing gets done. and to go off from him saying he has only lived there since june, well, I know he has had the majorty of those projects since like 3rd ED. so again, he is lazy. sounds like i am going off on a tantrum here, chances are that I am. but old man, as that is the name I gave him, is one of the best people i know. just 2 darn stubborn and lazy to ever get anything done. so yeah. sorry to waste your time on a pointless post, i just wanted to post something here and "rip" into him a little bit more.

The majorty of his stuff in this basement "doesn't contribute to active gaming". No matter what he says, it really doesn't. the terrain, well, sure, IF HE EVER GOT IT DONE! FYI playing with rock formations with orcs is the SUCK. Before his current RW/DA army he wanted to build, and bought all the stuff for, the bug army called "god" or something like that. That also doesn't contribute to active gaming. So yeah. there we go.

I don't have near the crap UltraSmurf does, but one thing I have learned through the years since my asencion into the Cult of the Keeper. Anything I have ever gotten rid of for any reason has been a source of regret. Trashed model, sold, lost, traded; it's all ended up with me not bing cool with he outcome. The single exception to that was giving a new player some models. Funny that; anything given freely was always a "good thing".

I guess I am just trying to pressure you to sit on that mound of crack, Ultrasmurf!

You need to check out some of the threads on TMP on this subject.

Let's just say that when you're talking about multiple scales, basing (for different rules sets) and periods, and specialized spreadsheets to keep track of everything, you're at another level.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil
