I know the new SM codex isn't out yet, but for the few that have seen it, I have a question concerning Sternguard units. Are these units to replace DeathWatch Kill teams, or are they just a vanilla SM unit w/ some of those capabilities? I'm about to make a DeathWatch kill team and I'd hate to have to go through the process of stripping them again, if that was the case. I suppose I could just use them to bulk up my SM Troops or fill out the Legion of the Damed I have but where would be the fun in that?

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Sternguard are to Deathwatch what Necrons are to High Elves.

In other words, neither are related.

They are separate units with no cross-over within their rules (other than they're Marines I guess). You can use Deathwatch and Sternguard in the same army without any issues. Just use the DW rules for your DW, and the Sternguard rules for your Sternguard.

Whether someone lets you use the Deathwatch rules, that's another question. I have a DW army despite most of my army not having rules - I don't care, it looks cool - so do whatever you feel.

Here's hoping Ordo Xenos finally gets a book, even if it's combined with the other two. Would only be two editions late if they get it done in 5th.

Ordo Xenos may be the next squats. In fact, maybe Ordo Xenos was fighting the Squats when the Tyranids ate them and they got eaten themselves. I think I just discovered GWs next idiotic fluff attempt to explain poor decisions.

When did Ordos Xenos ever have rules? (I haven't been around before the last part of third.) I don't know of any rules for them. So if there weren't any rules how can they be squatted?

Seen any Deathwatch rules lately?

Besides. 'twas a jest. I'm not referencing the rules so much as them existing in general. A full Inquisition Codex is long overdue IMO, and I fear that we may be a long long road ahead of us before we see something like that.

Edit: spelling

Somewhere between Sternguard and Vanguard you can make up a "true" squad of Deathwatch. The Sternguard have the ammo types of DW and the Vanguard can get the CC options.

Ratbarf, these are the official rules until the 5th SM codex goes live for GW Tournament play: http://uk.games-workshop.com/spacemarines/deathwatch/1/ After that GW seems to have removed them from play (at least for use in the USA).

Sternguard and Deathwatch use the same gear for the most part. The similarity ends there.

Deathwatch are ad hoc units formed by the Inquisition and used specifically in anti-xenos missions supporting Inquisition goals and needs. Sterngard are simply members of any given chapter's first company and fight within the demands and dictates of the chapter itself.

Now, why does this Sternguard look so Deathwatch-ish? Well, because GW wants to sell models. In a nutshell, GW wants to make Veterans cool so you'll buy the latest figures.

All good info, thanks btw. I'll go ahead w/ the plan. I'm actually making a SoB army and figured having a squad of DW and Grey knights would be beneficial depending ofc on the opponent.

I don't think there is such thing as DeathWatch.

But my Sternguard are all going to be wearing special Sternguard Veteran shoulderpads.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Biggest difference between Deathwatch and Sternguard, Deathwatch are geared for close combat.

Sternguard use similar ammo types to the Deathwatch however the Deathwatch also have access to assault weapons and have suspensors for the HB allowing it to be fired on the move. Basically the Deathwatch perform as an uber tac squad heavily equiped for both ranged and close combat.
