With the general intelligence I see displayed on these boards, I know it's not hard for the posters to evolve rules so that no longer supported armies they own can be playable in this edition of 40k.I've seen some incredible examples of LATD and 13th Co.armies on these boards and in my area. It seems hard to believe someone who put in the time to produce this kind of work would just put their army in a box and never use it again. I know here, at least the guys that did a lot of work on their stuff aren't going to shelve their armies but play them in their gaming groups and just do tournaments with other forces.
That being said, how many people here still run discontinued armies with their gaming groups?

I have a 1500 pt Squat force that i bring out every once in awhile. I run them as Imperial Guard in this edition. while they loose terribly they still get OOhs and Aahs from the new players. I also use old RT Guard, though outdated, my friends still let me use my conversion beamers and other fun models, ie: Imp jet bikes, and land speeders. Not to mention all the other OOP imp guard armies. After 20+ years of gaming, collecting is as much fun as playing.

World Eaters
Death Guard
Word Bearers
Alpha Legion
Iron Warriors

With the above is $1K worth of metal Daemons (Bloodletters, Daemonettes, Daemonette Cav, Plague Bearers and Furies).

None of those armies have rules any more. I also have a 2500+/- point Deathwatch army, but they never really had rules for an army, just a squad, and I built them for fun, so I guess they don't really count.

For the most part, I've moved away from dealing with discontinued armies. I no longer have the time or patience to deal with OOP stuff in any significant way.

I sold my Dark Eldar and Kroot Mercs. All of my 40k remaining armies are mainstream and currently supported by stand-alone Codices.

I've basically stopped playing Fantasy now that GW Squatted my Dogs of War. Tho I'd be tempted to go to a GW event, claiming "Empire" but fielding Dogs of War instead...

Still have my LaTD. Using a few of them as an outlaw gang in a Necromunda Campaign we have going at a few stores down here. We will overthrow the hive!

Some are glass as glass half-full type of person.

Some are a glass half-empty.

I have a mixed Beasts/Mortals/Demons army that has been trisected by GW. "But you can always play Legendary Battles!"

I have an Epic Squat army, but I haven't really played with them in some time.

I look for bad/under supported/dark horse armies to play.

In fact, I recently picked up my LatD again and put together a box of catachans/mutation sprue/random bits into about 55 more mutants for my old army. I spent the last week modeling and beginning work on painting them. So I guess that constitutes myself as someone who isnt willing to put down his favorite army just because it's not "supported" anymore.

I have a Dark Agnels army, does that count?

More seriously, I used to have a PDF Militia army (back of Codex Armageddon). In retrospect, it was dumb to play a back of the book list from a supplement, double niche! I tried to get it to work in the new codex but couldn't (I had so much counts as it confused opponents.. "This heavy stubber is an autocannon, all these guys with laspistol/CCW have lasguns, these autoguns count as lasguns even though they're the same thing, this Heavy Plasma Gun is umm..."), ended up selling most of it off.

I also had a back-of-the-book Night Goblin army. It could still technically be built in the new Orcs & Goblins book, but it sucked royally. Hadn't painted much of it so I sold it off.

So the answer is "No, I sell them off when they're no longer supported and I'm sticking to mainstream in future!"

I kept trying to get my friend to start a Chaos Squats army (Citadel made like a dozen minis for them), but for some reason he wasn't interested.

I have five of them. I'd like some in Exo-armour to match, but they don't come cheap.

Yeah, I've been trolling through eBay recently for Ltd Ed., OOP, unrealsed and hard to find minis - managed to pick up the old Adeptus Astra Telepathica minis - but for the prices I see some squads going for, $400+ for a single model, building an army of those is for the rich or the insane.

The rarest ones are the "unreleased" miniatures, stuff they cast off a few copies of in Nottingham for various reasons. Some are test shots, some are made purely for the studio, some are just done for a little fun by the staff. Such as the topless varients of the "Asdrubael Vect dark eldar slave girls". I saw the pair of those sell for nearly £200.

I can't help thinking there's something rather schoolboyish about wanting varients of figures with their boobs out, but there you go.

missed 5 exo-armour squats a few weeks back, got out-bid by £1 :K
went for £50 in the end which was bloody cheap.

Edit:
im starting a kroot merc army soon, LGS allows it, just cant use it in tourneys.
not as if the army is over powered, theres only a master shaper with melta gun to kill things like LR's, everything else (AV 13 -) is left to kroot guns on the krootox.
along with thier other problems thier points cost isnt too good.

One figure time and again I wish I'd bought was the Inquisitor 54mm Genestealer. It was only available for a few months and then discontinued and is so very hard to find now.

GW just didn't put any support into the Inquisitor game and to have the moulds just sitting around unused is a waste. Would it really cost much to run off a few for mail order? They always talk about "the hobby" but it's really all about money.

I have a latd army which i have pretty much put aside since it became unsupported, but a friend of mine continues to expand his using forgeworld renegades etc, looks very nice and no one at our local clubs minds him still using the rules so its all good....

I guess for players like me and him with a decent gaming group around you nothing really becomes unsupported, the models just get harder to find... that’s if like us you also have no real interest in tournaments, I only ever did one and never will again, never been around so much BO

Why do people think some of the chaos legions don't exist anymore?
You can still field them with the chaos codex- and the minis are still avalible.

And before people claim the chaos codex is crap- how come people still win with it then?
(2 out of the top 5 armies at heat 1 of the UK GT were CSM)

i still miss world eaters.
should go back to how they were;

no heavy or special weps in units of men (plasma pistols only)
if i ran a chaos army it would be a heavily themed world eaters army.
(not sure if you can take 2 P. pistols in units anymore since i no longer have the chaos dex)

Got rid of my squats in the last move (well, except for a couple of key pieces)

Still have my Deathwing, though I guess that's technically semi-supported.

Dumped my Word Bearers army (though frankly, it was never even started).

Alaitoc Eldar, though all I lost was the disruption table, and those rangers make GREAT civilized martians for VSF.

Speed Freaks could still be competitive, I'd think. Trukk boyz, storm boyz, a couple of wagons, warboss on bike, nobz on bike. No fighta-bomba raid or buggies (though you could squeeze one or two, I'd reckon).

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil
