Terrain is one of those generally neglected aspects of the hobby and somewhere between finishing my marines and when the IG codex comes out, terrain is something I want to try and have a try at. I've been thinking of going crazy and doing a ridiculous CoD table, I haven't put my finger on it but it seems like there is something missing to the CoD terrain line. Their have been a couple drowned out rumors of some additional CoD pieces, such as a landing pad. But what sort of things would all of you like to see. What sort of terrain pieces and sets are lacking from the CoD sets? Like what would be a welcome product addition?
I'd like to see some imperial statuary. Some roof tops stuff might be cool too.
Looking at the all the art in the 40k books, the cities dwarf the fighters. I realize that's artistic license, but I would love to have something that captures that scope and CoD terrain in its basic form really build the imperial equivalent to small town USA. I just kinda imagine more of a real city, in the hive world scale. I think it was Kendoka who had his large metropolis, but thats not all that practical. So where is the middle ground? I want to have my cake and eat it to.
Any one else out their have a dream of building a megalopolis?

Styro sheets and paint. buildup with alot of spyers, reinforced rigging, ala Necromunda, with littered 3-4" X12-24 in. rubble strips. You build up the rubble strips with chaff and rocks , parts from your bits box, etc. They make great drag/ uneven killzones between the buildings.
I have seen the plastic COD ruin sets that stacked like legos, but in my areas I haven't been able to run across them.
You can build up the styro sheets with some of the ruin boxed sets like the Imperial city sets, and buid up different levels of city with stacked styro sheets. ( 3/4 " or 1/2" works the best, because you can add in some PVC piping or additional buildup while chipping up the styro with the hotcutter.)
Some of the things I've been tracking down are armorcast mech parts, small chains and generators, the rubble, chopped up sprews, the occasional chewed up IG tank or other of your favorite vehicles and build up deadzones, kill zones and traps. There are the easy Mine filed strips, the stratigems, the occasional Odd bit, like some of the civilian type minis I've been finding here and there. ( Reaper has a great selection of "common folks types that work great for fantasy, AND 40K. add a bit or two and there you go, citizen with a prostetic arm, or the little kids that beg, or the dog packs that I've seen on some of the real life city fight places I've been.
COD terrain that they show in the magazine is too clean. When we were in !#@$@ we saw dog packs, tank wrecks, the garbage piles, blown up cars, C wire, fortifications, rubble and buildings broken up and strewn across the roads like trench lines, there was the overhanging roads, the blown bridges, and the smoke and stench that was everywhere.
As for being too "small, the scenery sets that GW has lets you build them up as high as you can, and you can build up several sets to make it up to 3' tall, or so. Remember that you can reset the sets so that you can build up several different types of buildings, then you can make large buildings out of several sets.
An issue that always comes up though is that of the building itself. On the table, the set can get out of hand if it is too high. Either it becomes an eyesore, or people avoid it like the plague. I haven't plaed on too many tables with scenery larger then 2' or so. Think of it as liniar battle. If I was going to fight flat on the table, then long range stuff fights at long range. Las cannons, Plasma guns, melta guns, sniper rifles, etc. Of course there is the tanks, or the skimmer, but fighting on the table with stuff like that can get you away from the city, then you sit back and bam- Bombardments from outside, leaving me to go AROUND the bildings, while you pick off things indirectly.
I'm working on stuff on 1X1 ' sections of plywood. mounting the stuff this way gives me at least 2 ft that I can do something with, or I can spread it out and make it on a 2 ft by 1 ft board.
- Storage is your worst enemy, so to me IMO, 2' is the max. 1 ' is the happy medium.
My Inspiration is City of Villians. THAT would be an ideal battlefield for COD if you could blow out some of the floors, open up windows and door ways, open up sewer systems, etc. kill zones, cover, concelment.
- References- go find some pictures of Bagdad, Stalingrad, Berlin, Kosovo,
movies like Children of Men, Escape from New York, Disaster movies, war movies, etc.
Just my thoughts.

aka_mythos wrote:Like what would be a welcome product addition? If you look through a number of their Codices, and this is especially apparent in the Black Templars Codex, there is a 4th type of Cities of Death sprue, one that is different to the other three. It is far less ornate, has cross-hatched windows, and loads of other accessories. From what I remember it wasn't released because it was too 'boring' compared to the other three. I say nuts to that - release it anyway. I'd love to have a less-ornate set of buildings that isn't covered foundation to steeple with skulls! The other thing that they need to release is the 'Generic Building Sprue', as it was called when GW still had a bitz service. It's the sprue that you get in every box - with the walls, and lamp posts, lights and, most importantly of all, floors. I bitz ordered well over 30 of those sprues, on top of all the ones I got from 3 Cities, 2 Sectors and 3 separate building boxes. And I still don't have enough. Sure, I could use plasticard or foamboard or whatever but the CoD floor pieces are made to fit with the kit, and they fit very well. As far as new releases go, really more generic is better (unlike with Daemons). We've got our Adeptus Mechanicus building, we've got our semi-monastic fortress one and we've got our ornate building with too many skulls. Now we need some regular buildings, with flat-faced walls, a good amount of windows, and nice big doors. Less ruins would also be good. Half my buildings end up being non-ruined buildings, so I've got tons of the ruined ends left over and no real way to use them. Some complete building kits rather than ruined buildings would be great. And bring on Planet Strike. I want my Landing Pad (and if it looks anything like the Landing Pad from the 5th Ed rulebook - also another place to see the original CoD bitz - I'll buy 3!). BYE

The generic building and the not so "boring building" I think would really go a long way to making more interesting table tops. I mean the Imperiums bureaucracy is big and killer and all but it's kinda ridiculous that a city would have so many Adeptus Mechanicus, sanctums, and administratums buildings as to outnumber the Starbucks. (Starbucks is the work of chaos). I think it be cool to just be able to get a box of those generic pieces sprues; I imagine you need close to double the number you get in a kit to really get the number of pieces one would need.

I built one building with all the skull building sprew bits, and it used most of the floor bits. I cant stand the hatch square yes lets put a skull protruding up into the walkway so every one trips on it it looks kewl but .
We need generic hab blocks and streets or sidewalks.

Yeah.
I'd like huge hab blocks. Huge.
And less "Oh yeah, I see that's an Adeptus Mechanicum Building. BOOOORRIIINNGG," stuff. The sanctum Imperialis was the worst. It's like having 9000 churches, 9000 Factories, and 9000 ornate cathedral thingies. It bores the hell out of me.
AAHHSIS.
More Generic Frames pl0x.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags. |

Try going modular. I'm doing my cratch built space port and next maybe a Temple/slum District and then you can use as much or as little as space/pointage/practibility allows.

It is kinda funny and sad that the most common thing in a city scape would be generic structures (like hab blocks) and its what GW decided not to release because it was generic.
I think there is a good opportunity to terrain making businesses that through the "coincidence" of similar dimensions to release a modular generic wall system.
Pegasus has their cathedral sets, now maybe if they'd do generic sci-fi walls.

i agree with all you guys on that. i think GW is way to "gothic" in there buildings(and lots of other things) im pertty sure that cities in the future are gunna look pretty close to what they are now. not covered in skulls and symbols and what not. besides i think anyways, that if i were in charge of keeping a city safe, that it would be SMART not to let the enemy know exactly what buildings are what. bring on the "bland" building sets!
