I've working at this army since Adepticon. I'm a slow painter and target only one squad a month. But I'm proud of myself as I just finished two demi-squads of Terminators in two days. They are from two AoBR boxes with left over bits to add a punch to each squad.

November should be a slow month as I need to start on my son's catachans for Christmas.

What paints did you use for foundation and wash?

Probably over complicated, but...

Black Primer then UM Blue Airbrushed on. I follow w/ a fifty/fifty wash of Black Ink and Blue Ink. Then a um Blue dry brush.

Once I'm confident in my highlighting I'll use SW Grey for that.

What type of setup are you using for your air brushing?

A simple two stroke compressor w/ water trap and a dual action brush.

Any close ups?

The past month I have been working on tanks. I have eight rhinos and 1 razorback put together, primed and based coated. I've started the final work on them for December. I will be adding FW resin icons and etched brass.
Here is the first few that I am finishing.


I will need to go get batteries for the camera to get more photos up and add requested close ups.

This past weekend, I finished off two more squads of AoBR tactical marines. That means to date I have finished 5 tactical squads, 1 assault squad, 1 devastator squad, the company command squad, and 2 demi-squads of terminators. I've been gifted one demi-squad of sternguard marines and one dreadnought.

Left to do to finish the third company proper: 1 tactical squad, 1 assault squad, 1 devastator squad, and finish 8 rhinos and 1 razorback. I put together, primed, and based the second squad of devastators last night.

Last night, I also picked up two boxes of veteran marines that will be used as one full squad of sternguard. I have four tyrannid hunters and one GamesDay Vet. sgt that will be the second half of the above mentioned demi-squad of sternguard. This year I also plan to do two squads of vanguard, two full squads of assault terminators, and finish the two squads of normal terminators. That will leave me w/ 8 squads out of 10 of the first company as well, so I will figure out what to do w/ the remaining two squads and also make up a command squad.

On the table also are power armor Calgar, Tigerius, a jump pack chaplain, a normal librarian, and Sgt Chronus. From Christmas I have unopened two drop pods and one land raider.

Needless to say, at my pace I can rest assured that I will have enough blue marines to paint until the end of time.

I just finished the core of my 3rd Co. UltraMarines. I have over 100 marines sitting on my table right now. I'll take pictures tomorrow and post them.

Phase 1 was the first 50 marines
Phase 2 was the cmd squad and the second 50 marins
Phase 3 will be the Rhino's, Razorback, and Land Raider
Phase 4 will be the Drop Pods and Bikers
Phase 5 will be the characters and objective markers.
Phase 6 will be constructing and painting the option swap outs for the Tac Marine squads
Phase 7 will be finishing a squad and a half of Stern guard and using the veteran marines as Sgt alternatives.


In other words, I've hit a major milestone but I am by no means done with this project.

Very nicly done, if this army was badly painted id say it was hell, but i dont realy mind Ultradicks, as long as there well painted.

The Emperor owes you a sticker, SPARKEYG. Building a whole Space Marine Company IS acheivable, it seems. Right, I'd better get doing stuff then - Cheers!

I want to thank everyone for the complements. Also, watch this space as I plan over the next several years of building a few more companies.

I'm torn between first company w/ all the terminators (as a deathwing sorta thing) or the 6th company w/ all bikes and counts as White Scars.

I will consede, this is good painting but it may well be an entire company, but a company of what? Bit smurfs in armour without a white hat on, no enemy will be scared of the smurfs! I do however have a soft spot for the 4th company, probably due to Graham McNeil although I prefer his chaos books better...

I couldn't decide between 1st or 6th company so I've started both. Shoot me now.

That's a lot of bikes, Sparkey - how many attack bikes are you planning within the 6th Company?

Also, if you're doing counts-as WS, will you be doing a Kossoro (sp?) Khan conversion?

I plan on 10 squads of 8 bikes and 1 attack bike each. I've already got a Khan conversion in the works/

I don't know to be honest. I'm just painting them at this point. I figure I'll do the first three as 2xmelta w/ MM ab, 3 as 2xplasma w/ HB ab, and mix up the last four. The command squad will be the most interesting to convert.

These I've found for trade here on Dakka for less than 40% retail. For about two hours worth of cleaning, filing, and fixing I think it is a fair trade. I'm still on the look out for more trades because I still have 7 attack bikes and 64 bikes to go. Also, I've set aside some of my hobby budget and my bonus to purchasing models for these companies.

Guessing you're going for a scout company after the 1st and 6th? You know that you are going to end up with the entire ultramarine Chapter in the end, right?

Your marines are very nice! I love the crisp and bold lines that many forget to use.

My ultramarines look somehwat like an anime cartoon, which is kinda funny since I don't watch alot of it.

I plan on doing the entire chapter. I've already done the third company and I want to do some of the interesting companies before I settle into the slog that will be the rest of the battle companies.

Time we all have, just need to carve it out. It's winter in Chicago, which means no soccer. That means I have a lot of time on my hands. The wife jokes that I have two seasons in my life, Soccer and 40k.

Thank you for the compliment. I have to work extra hard at it. I really can't put crap on the table since I have people like Redbeard in my gaming group that play w/ Golden Demon quality models on the table. It also helps that I've chosen to do companies whose colors really stand out against the UM Blue. I mean by ninth company w/ the UM Blue trim, I'm gonna gouge my eyes out.

An update for tonight:

Painted tires on 8 bikes and one attack bike. I plan to do the same tomorrow night and hopefully rebase the exhaust and engines of these 16 bikes and 2 attack bikes.

Well anyway Ultramarines are always none as the ultrasmurfs add some humor to your scout company when you get there.
I have been trying for years to get a thunderhawk the only way is to wait for the plastic model. Also a word of advice.......... If you want to be a bad ass in 40k Say that you are the prehersey ultramarines.
Theres no change what so ever. Also make the primarch!
