Those were either stripped(that's how all my stripped models looked after cleaning them), it's a by product of the picture, or it's something to do with the type/ratio of metals used.

The metal models are lightly washed with a black wash/ink.
They did that with all the old models in the GW catalogues. Just adds definition.
Also adding a touch of Future Floor Finish to your ink helps to break the surface tension and get ink flowing smoother.
Washes straight out of the pot might be a bit too strong, add a little water.

Those models on the left and right look pretty rad too, though. I wouldn't mind knowing what/who they are! The model on the left would make an interesting Vindicare assassin.
