Has anyone else had problems with GW's black spray paint in the new can? In the past few weeks I've tried two separate cans and one got decent coverage, but had an atypically flat finish which rubbed off very easily and the other goes on black but dries a dark gray color... So, am I just that horribly unlucky to have picked up 2 cans of sub-par product back to back or has GW screwed the pooch on this one?

I've been using the newer black spray in the can that's covered in just text and had no problems with it at all.

To ask the obvious, what are your spraying conditions? An odd final finish or one that flakes off may indicate that the can hasn't been shaken enough or that the surface hasn't been degreased.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Covering and sticking power depends on the conditions in which you spray the primer -- too hot, too cold or too humid can all have an effect.

If you followed the instructions and got a bad result, the best thing is to take the can and sprayed model to the shop and show it to them.

It happens from time to time, most time it is user error, humidity and such. BUT it does happen, when they got the new company making it a few years back the first few batches were total crap. Some times its old etc.

Make sure you shake the hell out of it, try not shooting it from the house to the out side if the temp is drasticaly different. I used to be a big defender of the GW primer but its just too expensive any more. The Wal mart brand a Krylon ultra flat black is just as good and sooooooo much cheaper.

If you bought it from your local shop talk to them about rplacing it, GW will most likely credit their account and its no big deal.

I have run several shops over the years and when the primer is actaully crap and has messed up plastic figs ( that cant be stripped like metal) I have got my reps to replace the figs and the primer for my customers with not much issue. Some times I sent the figs and primer back to GW or took pics, but most of the time they just replaced the damaged product.

It really depends on the account ( thought it shouldnt, defective product should be handeled as such) and their relationship with the rep.

Hope it helps.

I agree, cheap black primer does the job every time.

I stopped using gw primer a while ago, Halfords was cheaper AND better.

Now that GW want £8 a tin I'll never go back!

i use halfords too!
i also saw in our local B&Q (uk based hardware store) that there are loads of different colours available now. most are a bit bright for minis but they did have a pearlecent one (i remember someone asking how to get that sort of finish for some emperor's children)

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Hmm. It often doesn't have anything to do with the spray conditions, as GW's primer has notoriously gakky spray nozzles.

someone once posted that if you put your plastics in a cup full of lemon juice and microwave it for like 10 to 15 secs i think it was, it does somthing cool and makes paint just STICK to them. i dunno never tried it but other then blaming the GW paint i dunno what it could be. but I too am one of those cheap flat black spray can defenders lol

Old primer always has problems. Try to buy newer primer and don't keep your old primer to long.

The bit stuck on the side of England. Wales isn't it.

I thought the black paint was just paint , and not primer. I certainly wouldn't use it on naked metal models. I've always prefered plastic grey car primer , for over metal, plastic and resin. Then a spot of black "magic wash " to show up the details before painting it up.

In all seriousness to everyone; Don't buy GW Spray Paints. Seriously, they are massively overpriced, use cheap paint, doesn't really match their pot colors, and just aren't worth the trouble. Regular spray paints for plastic that you can buy for $3 a can works better, and if you can't find a really close color, just find one close enough and do a single thin coat of the pot color you want. I have been doing that for a while now and it works great. I got a can of olive drab green, part of a four paint set for painting cars camo? Works great for Catachan Green and Dark Angels green with one coat from the pot. Their brown is really dark, though, so probably only works for Scorched Earth and Chaos Black. If you are going to do a whole table, same idea, but try to find a paint on color NOT GW that's close to the pot for a brush on layer, this takes away the ultra flat, uniform color of spray on paint and adds deapth, in my humble opinion.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."
