Dunno.
But somehow, the opportunity of turning up and spending a turn standing around in front of an Orky Horde is somehow less than appealing.

Been seeing the drop pod lists don't seem to really put a dent in the ork horde. You get out, you shoot, then they assault you etc. If the list is a BW list, then your shooting is for the most part, ineffective. Also during any KP mission, you will most likely lose due to having 14+ KP on the board.
Now DP Marines might do better versus Daemons, due to being a lot more fragile to bolter fire for most of the base troops, except for Nurgle.
The Marine lists that have Crusaders and stern guard running around would end up doing better versus orks then Drop pods. Orks have a hard time with AV 14, so exploit that and you can take apart the ork horde. We have also been noticing thunderhammer terminators are a beating when getting assaulted by a 30 sized mob. But will see, I am bringing Orks to Baltimore .

Yeah... a bit chalk and cheese there. So let's see the challk; even if podding is nasty against gunlines, whatever... against the horde build they still won't be enough.
Basically, why would flashy new pods do any better than the well-proven green tide? Ork hordes can cover most tactical situations, and have a lot of mass. Drop-marines have... oh, right. Power armour. But they've had that for a while. I think a pod of sternguard w/melta would suit almost any build, but armies based around it can still be eaten by deployment, reserves, outnumbering, surrounding and the good old 'charged before you got to do your shooty trick'.
Pod lists don't scare much if your army has endurance. They also don't scare my Eldar, which have rather little of it.

while drop pods are fun and have lots of shinny bobbles their taken down pretty easily if you know what your doing.
I've run drop pods since 4th ed and if yor opponent castles, or his heavy on the assault I've had a hard time with that.
that said if they spilt their forces, at all, you've won. I can drop two pods and take the battle to my favor. the first half of the drop pods will set precident for the rest of the game.

Space marines will never be an amazing top tier army. Even with a new relatively powerful codex they are still a jack of all trades army that will have hard times handling extreme builds like the ork horde while maintaining the ability to face other armies. Drop pods don't do anything to ork forces that the marines couldn't already do.

An all drop pod army isn't going to be the GT winner. But an army that uses them and builds the army right could. I could very well see the marines as a top tier army as soon as the marine players get used to the idea that there are other enemies out there then MEQ.
Orks can be beaten, and on average it's not that hard to beat an extreme ork list if you play right. Marines have it a little tougher against orks as they don't field a lot of major league combat units but that is where you beat orks, in combat!
I still think with the cheapness of flamers, the ironclad, combat squading bikes, combi-weapons (read flamers for the most part for me anyway), typhoon style speeders and whirlwinds I don't see a lot of horde armies holding out. You can build a list to kill MEQ's and Hordes w/marines, most people just aren't doing it yet
But as for baltimore my money is on orks again since most people still won't have learned to beat them. My money is actually on a speedy varient of orks as everyone is gunning up for loota and horde madness. Most other armies haven't adjusted to horde lists yet.

Depends on on how many KP games they have at Baltimore. If they have 2 or 3, Drop Pods are an auto-lose.

Having started to toy around with an extreme dp list, I pretty much heartily agree with the statements....KP is just a W for my opponent, while the others I usually can cope.
The sad thing is that in "theory" the DP list is almost broken....but then the reality of a game sets in.
I am still looking forward to tweaking and finding just the right list, I know its out there!!!!

@deadshane:
If you're spending 200+, 300+ pts on Pods, you would still have the ability to consistently table your opponent in a KP mission?
Seems to me, starting at 6+ KP up, the optimal opponent strategy would be to simply run away and not engage, placing the pressure on the SM player. It's probably not what the SM player wants, but it should sew up the victory on KPs.

I'm not podding in, neither does Mondo.
Pods will have a harder time tabling opponents than I do. You cannot run from me for too long, my army is too mobile.
As far as kp's and pods go, pods are armour 12 vehicles, not so easy to take out multiples of them with other things shooting/assaulting you.

As an old 40k player contemplating a return to the hobby, it's topics like these that keep me scratching my head.
Ork dominance? *Return* of the space marines? Since when did Space Marines have anything less than the shiniest new models and the most game-breakingly good rules. I've only gotten to glance at the new Smurf book but it looks like yet another edition where they get to ignore most of the core game rules and hide behind their armour saves.
Also, how long exactly have the orks been in "dominance"? I remember them totally sucking until not that recently...

since the new ork book was released, and the codex actually got better in 5th than it was in 4th. The 10 years of Ork suckage have come to a ridiculously loud and screeching halt. At least till people learn to play 5th edition Then their just a very tough army

Orks got much better with their new codex and fifth editions focus on large troop bodies. As for space marines... I guess except for the previously mentioned rhino rush army they have always been a middle tier force, never bad, but never particularly good either. Given the massive volume of space marine entrants to most tournies its pretty telling that they so rarely win.
