For some slowed reason I decided to base all my models, vehicles included. This is fairly easy for everything except my defilers. Tanks are rectangles and as such can be done my cutting a rectangle about 1" extra in each direction. This allows one row of models to sit on the base when unloading transports or when they are attacked. I'm at a bit of a quandry when it comes to my defiler, should I round base of rectangle base them? I'm thinking rectangle as it's easier to cut out and I think will look better.

you could cheaply as possible try both and see what looks better. sometimes seeing it in your head doesnt look as cool as when its finished. make some of both out of cardboard and just lightly stick un under it to see how it works out.

I'm thinking one terminator base (I forget the dimensions) for each foot. That would be cool, and it would allow you to reposition it.

if you wanna blow $10 on it, you could get one of those oval shaped gale force 9 skirmish movement trays. The one for 15 models should fit a defiler good and it's a perfect oval shape.

.97 circle wooden bit from Walmart or local hobby shop. It is about 6 inches. Cheap as hell and looks nice. If you are going to the Baltimore GT the ones I did for two defilers will be up there. I plan on doing a post about it on BOLS before long. I magnetize mine so I can take them off to show where they were all exploded.
Here is a pic of one of my Soul Grinder and the Defiler.

I don't bother basing my Defilers. But then, I've recently decided to convert them even more, so we'll see where they end up...
Likely still unbased, but that's why the 40k rulebook specifically calls out Defilers as unbased.

You could use the spindle from a 25 pack of cds.
Mount the centre (ventral) hull on it. You can still get the legs positioned how you like. You should be able to come up with a pin/socket arrangement for the spindle as well, so that they come apart for transport.
It's also about a 6" diameter (or so). They also work well as flyer bases for larger aircraft.

yeah,
are you at a disadvantage when you base a SG/defiler?
I read a thread that showed how you can put one leg into 1" gap in a combat and the defiler counts as being in.... not that i advocate that kinda behavour... but ya know... getting a 8"/6" base into combat in a tight spot will be difficult ... even into something like a 4" gap between troops where you can visualise a SG bashing his way in...
Panic...

Rules-wise, play-wise, based vs non-based should even out.
It's just that the base will be *huge*, which is more of a pain to transport the models.

Base him on top of a demolished Reaver Titan. It's the only way to be sure.
IMO go with a circular base to keep in line with 40k. The use of CD's is a great & cheap suggestion.
