So when does Bil get nominated for Secretary of Partying Down? (I'd be so ok with that. Obama screwing up, let Bill loose at a college frat party-hilarity and media coverage ensues. Problems swept under rug).

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081114/ap_on_el_pr/clinton_state_department
AP – In this Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 file photo, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton D-NY addresses the press after …
CHICAGO – Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is among the candidates that President-elect Barack Obama is considering for secretary of state, according to two Democratic officials in close contact with the Obama transition team.

Clinton, the former first lady who pushed Obama hard for the Democratic presidential nomination, was rumored to be a contender for the job last week, but the talk died down as party activists questioned whether she was best-suited to be the nation's top diplomat in an Obama administration.

The talk resumed in Washington and elsewhere Thursday, a day after Obama named several former aides to President Bill Clinton to help run his transition effort.

The two Democratic officials who spoke Thursday did so on the condition of anonymity to avoid angering Obama and his staff. Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines referred questions to the Obama transition team, which said it had no comment.

Other people frequently mentioned for the State Department job are Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and New Mexico's Democratic governor, Bill Richardson.

I think she should be included in a fairly frontal role for sake of party unity.

Not normally a fan of that type of Politics, but if Obama hopes to achieve the change he promised, then having the complete backing of his Party cannot be a bad thing,

fair frontal is too close to full frontal. You are never allowed to mention "frontal" and "hillary" in the same sentence again

I'd have thought she'd be more useful in the senate, lobbying for healthcare reforms. Her strengths are in domestic matters as it is.

But the rumour seems to have some legs, be interesting to see how this plays out.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

To some extent I think its kind of a kickback for her eventual reconciliation with Obama after the primary campaign.

As an aside, this makes me think Richardson for Secretary of Homeland Security. Hard to go wrong politically when appointing a Hispanic guy from a border state to an office whose nominal function should be immigration control.

If Richardson is homeland chief we are doomed. Expect him to suck up to Al Qaeda if it looks like they might be winning, mayhaps showing up to a conference with a Death to America pin...

Yeah. A whole lot of meritorious argumentation going on here.

The truth needs no argument. He's a sycophant. Thats his only strength and claim to fame. If I wanted losers I would have rallied for keeping the Bush administration.

How is SecState a kickback.

Clinton is the future Ted Kennedy of the Senate. The Lioness. You want her to trade that to be Biden's flunky? Where is Madeline Albright these days???

I rest my case.

SecState is a step down for a career Senator, especially a leader in that "august" body.

Its my opinion, backed by his behavior in the recent campaign. Sucking up is his only merit.

Albright didn't have the distinction of public office before she was SecState. She was a career diplomat without that kind of design.

I think Clinton still has her eyes on the White House, and you don't launch yourself into that position by remaining a Senatorial lioness. This is especially true given Obama's grand designs for diplomacy in the Middle East.

Now whether or not such ambitions are feasible is a separate matter. Though I think you would hard pressed to find anyone who saw the Clinton's as people who were willing to settle.

This was Hillary's year. She'll be too old in 2016. That'll be Mark Warner's year, if things go to DNC plan. She will never be up for president again.

Fine, where is Powell? Where will Rice be in a year? SecState will never be the equal of a senior Senator. As Senator, she doesn't have to listen to President Obama. As SecState, she would.

What does SecState GAIN her?

I agree, but she might not. People are funny in that they have a hard time hanging it up. Especially the ones who are career fighters like Hillary.

The opportunity to put her name on some major international resolutions. Particularly with regard to the UN, Israel, Iran, and Russia. Even if she isn't going to try and strong arm a shot at the Presidency the SecState office gives her the opportunity to usurp Bill's legacy in many ways.

I'd have to agree with Dieneke. Its better to preserve her position in the Senate, where she's her own boss and has the potential to be top dog there. Sec State means she has to listen to someone else. She wants power, not a job. Besides, if he craters, she's primed to run in 2012.

Agreed thats my theory as well, but she may not subscribe. We are talking Clintons here. They are anything if not optimistic.

I don't see Hillary as SecState. 1) I don't think she'd want to directly report to Obama. 2) It would be a demotion for her in a lot of ways. She'll be on TV a lot more as Senator Clinton than SecState Clinton. I'm sure she still has presidential ambitions, and serving in the Senate another 8 years will look better on her resume than being SecState.

I don't really think so. She isn't a primary sponsor on any particularly ground breaking legislation. She doesn't have seniority. And there is a long line in front of her for majority leader. At least at SecState she has a shot at something like a Peace Prize, and also has the option of returning to the Senate after her tenure is up. Not to mention that a diplomacy focussed administration features the SecState in a lot of very public ways.

Ah so that's why she became a senator, not because she was married to the President of the United States then.

The main thing I have learned from watching the US political scene and foreign dealings for some years, is that US politicians don't worry about anyone who doesn't have a vote. So I doubt anyone will be sucking up to Al Qaeda.

Sec of State used to be the Springboard to the Presidency. And as for being in the Senate being better, only two Senators have ever won the White House.

I think putting her on the short list is for party unity, but I don't think she is actually in the running. She did to much damage and said to much that couldn't be taken back during the primaries. It's politics. She will be able to get on good committees but her White House future is effectively over.

Obviously there are multiple factors. Ronald Reagan was President of the United States and his qualification for Governorship was a Hollywood career. How someone got where they are is far less important than what they do while they're there.

Somehow, I doubt the Dems will rally behind someone new, even with Hillary's history... there hasn't been a change from backing an incumbent for president in a long time.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

Yes, because tax policy, oratorical skills, foreign policy, and general campaigning were not at all factors in Obama's victory. :S
