So I've got some of my old college friends somewhat interested in playing again, although they only play 40k (not WHFB or WM which are my current games).

What I played of 5th and Orks (the little I did of it) I found that the Kult of Speed army I used to play with my mainly 3rd Edition Ork army was fairly well and neutered. I know Orks are top tier, I played the hell out of the horde, but that was all "proxy games" with my slugga+choppa Boyz standing in as shootas. I'm not going to buy and paint 150+ Orks (what it would take to own the horde, rather than proxy it), but I would like a KoS army that worked.

I look at the new Battlewagon model and I get an idea:

3x Battlewagons - Deth Rolla, Red Paint, Extra Armor
3x 20 Slugga Boyz, Nob w/ PK+Bosspole (one unit is 19 in size)
Big Mek w/ KFF to give the Wagons a 4+ Cover Save always

Then I need to start filling out the rest of the list. I hear about how great Nob Bikers are and there's a cool conversion waiting to happen with Plastic Black Orcs + new Bikes, except this is for friendly games so I wouldn't do the abusive "unique models so spread the wounds" style thing - but I wouldn't mind a unit of 6, Waagh Banner, Cybork, Painboy, and some PK's, along with my Warboss on Bike model to go with them.

At 1750 this leaves me putting in either a stock Trukk Mob + some Deff Koptas or SnikRots Kommandos, all of which I have the models for.

Does this sound viable to you all who have lived and played 5th edition?

Looks good to me. Your death rollers don't work on vehicles so you've really only got your WB to take on heavy armour (and the nobs on the charge.)
So I'd take rokkit koptaz to seek out the rear armour or get lucky with glances. (take them as single choices)

People say snikrot can be handy in shaking up your enemy's back field but I've never tried it so I don't know. I guess the trukkers could be worth it too if you can get another PK nob with them, your enemy will probably be focussing on the Nob bikers or the BW so the trukk should go the distance.

isn't KFF 5+ save though? (still worth it, if it is IMO)

3 BW is great though, one's got to get through. ROLL ON!

Yes, sounds good enough. I'd consider another battlewagon instead of bikers for the nobs mob just to get your wagon count up but I'm thinking of running something like that myself once I get my wagons up and running.

You could add a Boarding plank, which will give your squads Nob a chance to attack an enemy vehicle with out disembarking, you could also consider the ram or wrecking ball. Two war bosses on bikes would also be good anti-tank/ anti-marine solution, this is the best option if you have to points....

I threw a little something together on Army builder. It's based on what you have here with some minor tweaks. With MY set up, you're at 1214 points... So, you only have 536 left to spend (and NO remaining heavy slots).

3 Battlewagons with:
- 2 Big Shootas (for those "Weapon Destroyed" results & when you can't Tank Shick your enemy for some reason)
- Deff Rolla
- Grot Rigger
- Red Paint Job

I've found the Grot Rigger to be a better buy than Extra Armor, as EA only helps on 1/6 of the Penetrating results and 1/5 (on open top vehicles) of Glance results. Grot rigger doesn't help on any MORE results, but the result he helps with is FAR more devastating to this army than "No Move."

Now, as for your Boyz... I took:

1 @ 20 with a PK Nob w/Extra Armor & Bosspole
1 @ 19 (same nob)
1 @ 19 (same Nob) - 'Ard Boyz

Since you wanted the KFF Mek, I left him in. He's with the 19 Boyz.
I put Mad Dok Grotsnik in with the 'Ard Boyz. A 4+ save with a 4+ FNP is something beautiful.

The problem you're having is that you're going to get your butt handed to you in objective missions. As it sits, your best Anti-tank is the Power Klaw in HtH, and every turn you aren't fighting Infantry with a PK is one turn closer you are to losing the (objective) mission.

Honestly, IMO, the KFF is nice, but ot wholly necessary. If you DO want it, I suggest the following (for 1278 points)

1 @ 18 with a PK Nob w/Extra Armor & Bosspole - 'Ard Boyz
Add Grotsnik AND the KFF Mek to this unit and put them in a Battlewagon (as outfitted above)

4x:
12 Boyz (with a PK Nob w/Extra Armor & Bosspole)
Trukk with a Red paint Job & Reinforced Ram

It's slightly more points, but you have more boys, more scoring units, and MORE POWER KLAWS.

A good technique from here is to leave one unit of Boys on an objective (preferably in cover LOL) and use their Trukk for a unit of Burnas. Zoom the Burnas up & dish out up to 12 templates of fiery love.

Alternatively, you can dish out less templates (say, half) and assault with the other half as power weapons.
If you only use the templates, and don't assault with them, then (a) you can keep them in the Trukk and (b) you had better have enough troop units in the vicinity to keep that Trukk from being assaulted by any survivors, as even a Bolter can kill it!. LOL

I think that, if you want to play KoS at 1750 points, you'll be far happier with numerous units of Trukk Boyz over 3 units of Battlewagon Boyz. I used to think that 3 BW's with Boyz was the way to go... I learned otherwise after playing it in a couple games.

Also, as you are now at 5 scoring units, you could always drop one of the Trukk Boyz units is you really felt the need to have the 162 points for Elite, Fast or Heavy choices.

Who says Deffrollas don't work on vehicles

It is still under high debate...and a 'Ard Boyz judge ruled that it did so...

It is up to the local club until it gets sorted out. (unless it was solved by a faq I have failed to spot)
