Hey all,
Sorta new to this community (and even sorta new to 40k in general), so hello to all.

Anyways, here is the project I am working on: I am starting work on creating a Necron Pylon on a CNC machine at my school.

The reason I am doing this (Other than because it will be so awesome) is that for a project for a class, we are told to create something based of reference pictures, and hey, why not a super-cool Necron Pylon! That said, I want to try to get this fairly accurate to the pictures I have seen, and to the correct size too.

So, with that in mind, I was wondering: Does anyone have an actual pylon that could take measurements of everything for me? (As in sizes of the base, radius/width of the "ring", etc), and could take some decently high quality pictures of one?) Or, if not, even the basic width/height of one?

since the pylon is'ent a figure that have a special kit you will probably have to guess a lot but if anyone have made one please tell him the mesurments so he can get on with it.
i would probably make it based on the pics in "apocalypse" rule book and try to make it work.

My boss has one in his glass case in the office. I may beable to get rough measurements off it. Pics are less likely, but it won't be until at least tomorrow because I don't have a tape measure on me atm. Best try to get someone else that has one. The other way to do it would be pick a height you want and then create the model based on the images in the Apoc book by taking your chosen height and scaling all the measurements to the pic.

yeah, that's what I was thinking, just to get a base size of one dimension, and scale the whole thing to that...

OR, I guess what I could do, is scale it all to the size of the monolith's crystal (which seems like it should be the same one) that way I wouldn't have to create the crystal as well...

But yeah, even some decent pictures of a pylon would be enough (I can't see much detail off of the 300X300pixel images I am looking at)

yes, it can be ordered from FW, BUT:
-I don't want to pay that much money for-
-A project I am working on (for school), creating something from scratch, with ref pics.

There's always the Forgeworld pictures, especially the last one. I know it seems like you need measurements to draw this but take it from one who's been down this road and just trust in your eyes. You have the crystal as a reference and you can just scale everything later if you feel it comes out the wrong size. Draw from the outside in, shaping each major subassembly before shaping the subassemblies of those subassemblies, so you don't spend too much time on one little section or accumulate sizing errors.

What software are you using?

wow, thanks, those are actually some nice pics. That side view one is probably the most helpful one.

Also, about the software I am using, I have a LOT of options: The CNC Mill I am using is Running Mastercam, so it can import:
-A couple types of model files
-Models from Autocad (which I also have access to, and is very easy to do stuff like this with)
-Isometric Pictures

So, I will probably design it as a 3d model (sort of), then transfer that to mastercam, then the mill.

Anyways, thanks to Construct's link to those great pictures, I am starting on designing the pylon, staring with the ring...on Monday or Tuesday I should hopefully start milling the main pieces, and I will post some pics when I do.
