I was thinking about it last night. Do you prefer to have a generic army (Meaning you could use it as any other type of army like having marines but using CSM rules) or do you prefer to have a brand name army (Ultramarines, World Eaters, Bad Moons, etc)

Having done both I prefer the latter. I used to play a generic CSM army (Steel Cobra paint scheme). I played with the old Iron Warriors rules. BUt I got tired of explaining what I played. Now my armies are anything but generic. I have a Death Guard and World Eaters army. So what do you prefer and why?

I'm generally attracted to an army because I like it's fluff, theme, aesthetic(sp?), or any combination of the three. As such I generally keep to those, so Brand Name for me.

I like lots of flexibility. If people don't know what my army is, it's not really my problem.

I generally prefer generic myself. Part of the fun of creating your own SM chapter, IG regiment or whatever is writing fluff for them. It gets a bit annoying if you turn up to a GW or gaming club for a game and you end up facing off against the same 'brand name' army you have...he says after collecting Space Wolves, Crimson Fists, Death Korps and starting Alpha Legion...Don't listen to me.

I'm sort of in between. I don't particularly care about the paint scheme, but the models should match the codex. If you want pink plague marines, fine with me as long as the models are plague marines. If you want purple templars, fine with me as long as they look like loyalist marines. If you want to play Tau and use Space Marines models, gtfo.

What he said.

I should also add that I hate it when people use the same models with a different Codex every game, or swap traits, etc. The point of a homebrew army is to have a unique and characterful force, not to be able to pick the best rules for the occasion.

Actually that better sums up my point of view than I did.

Yeah, I agree with the statements that the army should at least fit with what overall group it belongs in. My Shadow Hawk space marines are Loyalist, and they look the part. But I can use the Marine book, BA list, or DA list depending on the type of army I am fielding.

I am not a fan of people trying to have an army that uses Chaos rules, regular rules, and sometimes even Ork rules all with the same army!

I play IG and LatD, so obviously my army is a bit on the generic side.

As my avatar shoes, I play grey marines, like Jervis. I like the freedom to move between Codices as I choose.

(THIS SPACE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK)

Tyranids had no brand and my new army is space sharks, a second founding of ravenguard. I'm likely to simply use vanilla marines with Shrike until something more fitting (if something more fitting) ever comes along.

I'm pretty happy with the lot my armies in now. It actually feels personalized and special, despite being a "generic" marine force.

I voted 'other' because I don't think it matters. Just don't put down your Chaos Annihilation Force and then tell me it's Deathwing.

Hehe obviously you have never seen the Lust Wing on "From the Warp" Oni! I would be thrilled to see the Deathwing in Chaos Clothing hit the table

Personally, I am a tad set with my armies. Sisters of Battle are pretty much nothing but, though I had been tempted to say they were Vulcan marines. My space marines are as they are, and Chaos isn't interesting enough for me to use them as counts as.
I do have a counts as Orks lost and the damned army in the works, but they are going to be so different that they won't be moonlighting as anything else. Anything else than they are already pretending to be at least.

I like the following things in my opponents:

1. That they have their miniatures at least primed (but exceptions can be made, i.e. I just put this kit together while I was waiting for you, it's wintertime and there's no where for me to prime, etc).

2. That the curtains match the carpet - you're using the models that are attached to the codex, or at least close to it. If Blood Angels are using the SM codex as red marines, minimal complaint; if the blood angels are being used as the troop choices for a CSM army - no.

3. That anything that is not WYSIWYG is spelled out for me before we start. If your guardsman has a grenade launcher in his hand and you don't yet own the plasma gun version, let me know and I can roll with it. Don't tell me, and you've got a ten point grenade launcher.

It rather depends on the Army. I run Greenwing Dark Angels but use the SM Codex rules because unless you are taking squads of 5 with plasma in a razorback, the SM Codex rules are better. And I can even represent some of the characters and traits of the chapter using the Vannilla marines options.

I play my own chapters.

I like the variety of being able to use a different rules set for each game.

Also, with the way that GW constantly changes the rules and the fluff, you have to deal with people trying to tell you that you're not fielding a proper 'x' army (Ultramarine, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, etc).

I like the generic stuff. It gives you way more flexibility with what you can do with your army, and if the fluff on a named army changes you can just slide on by.

I play Death Guard and Goff Orkz.
For my Death Guard I play to fluff, sqauds of 7,minimal transport,no foot slogger draging around a lascannon, etc.
My Orkz are a bit more flexible as I have included some lootaz&such, however i've stayed very Goff themed as I use LOADS of boys with slugga/choppa combo + lots of Nobz.
With me WYSIWYG.
