So there are various upgrades you can give troops which there are no models for, as we all know. The examples I'm thinking of right off are from the IG codex; carapace armour (yeah yeah, I know it's not a good buy but some of us like it anyway) and shotguns. There are no guardsmen with shotguns, excepting FW, and
I don't believe even FW carries regular guardsmen with CA.

So the question is, are you OK with people just saying there models have carapace armour? Or do you prefer that they actually GS it on?

Now adding CA is a piece of cake with GS, but shotguns are a bit more of an in-depth conversion in most cases. Are you cool with people counting lasguns as shotguns?

I'm sure other Codicies have upgrades that have to be converted too, so what's your opinion on those? Do you insist that people actually do the conversions?

I just tell people that my IG have Carapace before the game, I only had one kid tell me I should GS more plates on all of them, and this was several years ago when the first came out. And I told him no way, now my GS skills are to the point where I could pull it off but wouldn't want to do it to 100 painted IG.

Shotguns you can either chop off the front and convert them out of lasguns or buy FW which look great.

So long as they say beforehand, and remain consistant, it's fine.

It's fine as long as the same conversions don't represent different things and you are informed ahead of time.

I would not have much of a problem playing against someone who used normal guardsmen in place of carapace armored models as long as they were not mixed and it was made clear to me. However for myself I always try to model the options correctly, WYSIWYG.

im even fine with people proxying their mini even if they look nothing like what they are supposed to be aslong as....

they made it clear its really really because they cant help it rather then some people did it to have cheating intended.

i have people even right a sheet of paper of what they are supposed to be and throw it ontop of unit. this way both side can see it clearly and constantly of what the unit is.

I don't care if people proxy grots as guardsmen, as long as it's consistent across the whole army. I think it's perfectly acceptable to use Cadians as heavy infantry with carapace armor and catachans as conscripts in flak armor, for example.

Regular Cadians as guys with CA is fine by me. It's a global army-wide thing mostly, and having created a 100% converted IG army myself, I know it's a hell of a lot of effort to put in, and not everyone has the time. So long as there's distinction between the CA and non-CA armoured grunts, I'm fine. Hell, I'm even fine with Steel legion models having CA. "It's under their coats" makes sense. Just don't try to claim your catachans have it too...

Lasguns as shotguns is not ok. It's ambiguous. The necessity here is to be able to distinguish between the models with shotguns, and the models without. If I can't tell from a glance, then it's not ok. About the minimal solution in my eyes would be to snip the barrel bit off the front of the lasgun, and paint it a different colour. It's obvious then, but of course I'd prefer a reasonable job of converting one up.

Oh, and if you are wanting Carapace Armour AND Shotguns...use Arbites.

Now to answer the actual question! As long as there is consistency between the conversions or proxies, I'm not all that fussed to be honest!

I've hacked the muzzle, stock, magazine and scope off a lasgun and drilled out the resulting stubby barrel before. It resulted in a passable shotgun. It may be harder to do it to lasguns clutched in the hands of guardsmen, I've never tried it.

I don't accept conversions. As far as I'm concerned if you're not using a model the way GW intended you have no business playing their games.

I wouldn't care at all. And I would hate to meet anyone that did.

I use a Forge World XV89 battlesuit for my commander, he's equipped like a regular suit but I just wanted the cooler model, and for a lot of my models (mostly tanks) I don't have bits for upgrades that don't actually have bits made for them. I actually converted something that could count as a TA for my suits, but that was as far as I went (and really a TA sounds like an internal piece of equipment anyway). I don't have DLs, DPs, or really any tank upgrades represented on my tanks.

Why does it matter? So long as I have it all written down and paid for in my army list, which you're free to look over at any point in the game, and the obvious things like weapons are at least displayed properly (well, I have grenades modelled on my fire warriors but I never take them...I thought it was just part of their uniform, I didn't have a codex when I assembled them), then what's the problem? I really don't know what I'd do if I ever met someone that anal...I glued all the doors shut on my transports too, does that mean the guys inside can't get in and out?

I don't care as long as it looks remotely close to what it is supposed to be and is explained prior to starting play. The only thing that I find a bit shady is if the base size is not the same as it should be.

I would prefer a visible distinction between the troops with different equipment and the regular troops. In a friendly game I would probably let it slide, but it would bug me.

As long as it's a reasonable attempt to look like what it's supposed to be. If you're doing something really wierd that's unrecognisable then some explanation before hand is not only polite but necessary.

Obvious sources of confusion should be avoided, such as a conversion or 'counts-as' that looks clearly like a lasgun when it's supposed to be a hand flamer.

And no, I wouldn't accept a washing-up bottle to proxy for a carnifex, they're not even trying.

A lot of the specialist games necromundia gangs have shotguns. They're all different, but they are shotguns. And the hands are in the correct place for other GW figures to make it easy.

www.scotiagrendal.co.uk does plastic junkers (£5 for spures to make 10) who have shotguns. So there's one source. And they also do plastic viridians (£5 for ten, funny old thing), who, with Cadian heads and arms, actually become IG in Carapice armour....
