Am I the only one who's seriously thinking about stocking up on the current Imperial guard plastic box sets before the new releases that will undoubtedly accompany the new Codex just in case GW bollocks up the new stuff?
I really like Cadians and Catachans and just can't convince myself that after the new codex comes out things like infantry boxes and heavy weapon squad boxes will be as good or be as good value for money...
I also really feel like making sure I have plenty of the current Leman Russ and Sentinel kits. :S
Anyone else have these thoughts and concerns?

I doubt theyll do much with the leman russ, or sentinels, but Im pretty sure your visions that prophesy impending rubbish [mod edit] in the plastic troops dept. are right on the money.
imo, GW models seem to be taking a dive atm, with a few notable exceptions. better to be safe than sorry.

A semi local store was having a decent day after x-mas sale, so I went and stocked up on some Guard stuff for when the new codex comes out. I figure this will give me time to build and paint everything so I just have to build Valks when they come out

I'm thinking of hording a couple of Cadian Shock Troop boxes. Well, less hording than just buying.
It's easier to convince myself to part with hard earned money when there's a fair chance that I might be worse off for not doing so. I can see at least four or five Cadian Shock troop boxes, and a couple of HW Squad boxes sitting on my bookshelf over the next few months.
I doubt they'd straight out drop the current IG trooper ranges completely, so I reckon Cadians will be easy enough to nab, but I'm not sure about Catachans. I can't remember the last time I saw an all Catachan IG army, and if the talk of Greatcoat Guard is true (well, it could be) then store shelf space is an issue and we could see some of the smaller stores dropping Catachans either in part or completely.
Also these rumors of shock troop and HW combo boxes have put my value for money senses on high alert. If they're either nothing more than myth, or are a reasonable price, that's fine. I'll have bought an extra 100 or so guardsmen, but I will put them use. All it means is I'm ahead of where I would normally have been, and will continue to buy them as and when I need. If, however, they do come in these new combo sets, and the prices makes the worse value, I'll be happy I got the numbers in when they still represented value for money.
I'm not buying the current Russ or Sentinels any more than I otherwise would, as I doubt they'll do much to such iconic designs. That and a design change is neither here nor there for me on those two units.
I still see a bit of my hard earned cash going into the coffers of GW each month for the time being.

In all fairness, their recuts are far from all bad. Look at the Ork Boyz box: Enough bits for ten models (eleven if you have a spare base lying around, and who hasn't?), two heavy weapons, a Nob with a variety of weapons: £12. Get two boxes and you've got (for example) two Nobz with PKs, two 'eavy weapon boyz and sixteen slugga or shoota boyz for £24. Previously it'd cost you £18 just for the Boyz, £5 each for the Nobz and about £6 for the 'eavy weapon blister. So you save £8 on the old price and get a bundle of funky bits thrown in.
It's not all negative.
...Er, I think that's about right, off the top of my head, anyway.

I'll probably pick some up, one or two boxes just to have the spare bodies around to make use of the extra special and heavy weapons that will be in the new sprue.
Well hopefully anyways, but I'd expect if they do make this new squad box, they'd give us all the options, so with the extra figs I should be able to make an extra two heavy weapons and three special weapon troopers for special squads etc. Well if they make it into the codex.
I hope so as my 4 flamer teams when I had a Guard army a before love fighting my wife's Tyranids and my mates Orks.

I can't say I'm big on catachans right now. They need a resculpt. And really, how often has GW resculpted something and made it worse?

the new daemonettes spring imediately to mind.
I was also massively disappointed with the new bloodletters, although I will admit, theyve grown on me.

Oh right, daemonettes. I like the new Bloodletters though.

I think compared to the old (4th ed) bloodletters, they dont look chunky & powerful enough. That said, their litheness has grown on me a little.
If I was resculpting them, Id do away with that weird pointy thing on their heads that looks like a squid's mantle & give them long scraggly hair, & make them a little more muscular.

My biggest issue with the bloodletters isn't the look, which I like- it's the fact that they are practically monopose, but come in a bajillion fiddly bits. Multipart is good because of posability, monopose kits are good cos they're easier to put together. New bloodletters combine the worse of both worlds!

I guess you could stock up, but I wouldn't bother with it, personally.
I have something like 150+ Guardsmen and Storms combined, and count Guard tanks by the dozen. So there isn't any worry here. Plus, I'm pre-plastic, so any adds wouldn't be from either of those two ranges, anyways.
