Hi all,
So back when I played 40k I never really got into the hobby side of it. That is to say I had a friend who had all this gear, and I just borrowed what I needed to make/paint my models.
Now that I'm starting my own army, it's confusing to try and figure out what you need/want/ and what a deal in paint actually is.
I suppose paints are more of a army choice and it's better to choose a limited pallete and stock up. But how many is enough? For instance. If you were making orcs as a example (fantasy setting), would you just get dark green, light green, brown, a red, and maybe some flush color? Then get 3 sets of each?
Or are you better off with variety for variety sake and buying the sets/bundles of paints and then when you run out just change colors?
It's confusing because in the rulebook examples they are always mixing colors. So paint wise? How many pots do you need?
Secondly, tools
I'm not a modeling expert, but I understand some of the simpler ones but some of the more advanced ones seem to be a bit much. Now I know warhammer likes to sell thier product so they advertise all the tools as being essential. Realistically though I'm just wondering, other then a filing down units and pliers what else is really needed?
Well thanks, as I said not a big painter/modeller but want to make sure I have enough of what I need so once I buy the models I can just go to town.
Thanks

If I were starting new, I'd buy a set of GW washes to start, because washes give great fast results without the whole blending / highlighting / shading effort. You can use washes with everything, and use successive washes to get various tinted / toned effects quickly and easily.
Color-wise, I'd plan to thinly prime and then basecoat via spray paint, and just wash them.
For details, I'd pick up a few complementary colors (i.e. boltgun, brown, red, black, white), and again, make use of GW wash. So any of the GW starter paint sets would do just fine.
Tools-wise, small files, pliers, exacto-knife, and Testors model cement (in the red tube).

I'd buy the 'games workshop paint set', some glue, wire cutters and a hobby knife as a bare minimum.
You can make nearly every colour in the world with this set!!!!!!!!! Buying other colours is purely for convenience!
When you find yourself mixing too much go out and buy the closest colours to what you are mixing.
As paints run out replace them.
Washes are great, buy those next but it is always possible to make washes from paints.
NEVER buy tools/glue from GW they are cheaper and better from everyone else!!

find a local model store for superglue & plastic glue - i use a really runny superglue and fro plastic i use both the brush on type (Humbrol Liquid Polycement glue) and Revell Contacta Professional. The Revell is available at Amazon too (at least in the UK).
Tools wise - a set of needle files, a decent set of clippers, wood glue & a crappy brush to apply it, an unwanted white tile for mixing paint on and something to hold water in that your missis won't mind being covered in paint!
Wants - pin vice, more files, green stuff, brown stuff, grey stuff, Procreat putty, clay shaper (for smoothing down the putties listed above), a set of metal sculpting tools, a pipette or small syringe
Also some varnish

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

I recommend a jeweller's saw for cutting plastic or metal. It changed my modelling life.
Also, there have been a couple of threads recently about what's needed for starting painting and modelling...
