Assuming that you could pick-and-choose a Codex consisting of:
- 1 HQ entry,
- 1 Elite entry,
- 1 Troops entry,
- 1 Transport entry,
- 1 Fast entry, and
- 1 Heavy entry
what would you pick?

Assume that each entry is basically cut from its current Codex with all of its current options and relevant special rules, but no adjustments are made to the entry.

For example, Tactical Marines would retain ATSKNF and Combat Squads. But if you picked Wave Serpents as the Transport entry, the Tactical Marines wouldn't be able to use them because Wave Serpent isn't part of the Tactical Marine entry. However, if Scorpions were the Elite, then the Scorps could buy the Serpents that the Marines could use...

So what would it be?

For example, I might take:

HQ = Eldrad for the Psyker cheese
Elite = Tau Crisis Suits for mobile firepower
Troops = Plague Marines because they're tough
Transport = Rhino so the PM can go somewhere
Fast = Necron Destroyer for fire support
Heavy = Leman Russ Demolisher for the cheap Pie

Quick off the top of my head I would choose:

HQ = Calgar and his 3 full squads of Honour Guard
Elite = Wraithguard with Spiritseer
Troops = Full squad of Thousand Sons
Transport = Some form of Land Raider
Fast = Full squad of Vanguard
Heavy = Monolith

I would combine the Chaos Space Marines Codex, the Chaos Daemons Codex and the Lost and the Damned section from the Eye of Terror Supplement into a single massive Codex: Chaos, with the Daemon Prince from the Chaos Daemons Codex replacing the one from the Chaos Space Marines Codex as an HQ choice. And keep the generic lesser and greater Daemons just in case a player wants an undivided force with Daemons.

Is it listed in a Codex under Heavy Support?

Please try again.

I think taking units of tau with markerlights, suported by lootas would be fairly brutal. shrike could give them H&R, so they could pull out at the end of combat, and shoot more in their turn.

Tau don't have Combat Tactics, so Shrike can't help there. Plus, nobody else can access the Markerlight hits, so it's fairly pointless all round! Sorry skip!

damn! gross oversight I guess, forgot about the combat tactics. (now, i dont play any of the 3 armies above, so I just went with what sounded good )

on the markerlight subject, does it specify that only tau units gain the benifits? I ask as i have had people use markerlights to boost their shooting from kroot and vespid units. would be good to know if that is not the case.

Vespid are a noted exception, as long as the Strain Leader is alive. Kroot cannot.

HQ Chaos Sorcerer
Troops Genestealers
Elite Bloodcrusher
Fast Attack Destroyers (if Phase Out doesn't count for the conglomerate army) otherwise Scout Bikers
Heavy Support Soul Grinder

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

I figure that markerlights + obliterators would make a mess of a lot of stuff, 20 sisters w/ faith are awful hard to move off objectives, nob bikers are just sick, and a bloodthirster for kicks.
