Obviously I don't want to work on a codex/army book if it's going to become obsolete.

So what's the 12 month rumor set for Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 Codex/ Army Book releases?

The 40K codexes coming down the pipeline are Necrons, Dark Eldar, and Space Wolves, and we know IG is out in May.

I'm not sure what is up next for WFB(beyond Lizardmen that is), but Skaven keep being mentioned so it is probably them.

Stay away from those to be sure.

Someone at a shop (not a worker, just someone hanging out) told me that Tomb Kings were
up, but I'm not sure of his reliability, though he did know the Lizardmen Army Book rather well.

So I'd be safe to do the following (based on the Codex and Army Books that I already have)

Fantasy: Dwarves / Wood Elves / Daemons of Chaos / High Elves / Vampire Counts
40k: Eldar / Space Marines / Orks / Chaos Space Marines

My Codex Library is woefully out of date. I think the most recent ones that I have other than
Eldar are the Inquisition books. I HAD the orks one, but I'll have to pick it up again in the coming
months.

Malf:

For 40K you should only really consider doing the 'new style' codexes as those are the most likely not to receive an update for quite a few years.

That would be anything from Codex Eldar on, meaning:

Eldar, Dark Angels, Chaos Space Marines, Orks, Chaos Daemons and finally Space Marines.

Thanks! Shows you how well I pay attention.

And is it just me or is the 4th edition Eldar Codex a little daft? Like that little
Autarch rule that you guys pointed out. It's hidden in a section that just
says "These are special rules." Then all of a sudden you have a specific special rule!

Okay, I'm done. Thanks.

Add Warriors of Chaos and Dark Elves to the FB list as they came out last autumn. Also Empire and Orcs & Gobbos have 7th edition army books.

Was Empire the first one? I can't remember. That was years ago! I barely
remember because I started playing Warmachine at the time.

Yes the Empire book was first very quickly followed by the OnG book, and it shows as both books are very bland compared to the last 4 or 5 books.

The idea behind that layout concept as they've explained in interviews is as follows:

The goal was to create a codex that gives enough space for each unit to be fully flushed out (typically a page for each unit) with fluff, stats and special rules that pertain specifically to them. In the middle of the book you have the wargear and special rules that apply to multiple units and then, in the back part of the book you have the army breakdown in brief form with all the points values that is used to actually write up your army list.

The idea is to create a book that presents the army better especially to new readers as they can pick it up and start reading about each unit's fluff along with its corresponding rules. Then once that has been consumed the reader can move onto the back of the book and actually create an army list from the convenient army list in the back.

However the reality is that this format has tended to frustrate a lot of veterans as many people would much rather have the full stats and points values for a unit found on one page and we've gotten used to the idea of one central 'wargear' area to refer to so it is a little hard to adjust to looking for the invidual unit's pages to find their wargear instead. Of course it also doesn't help that there are several cases of page references in the Eldar codex that are typos directing users to the wrong page either (at least there were in the first printing)!

Later codexes have improved things a tiny bit by adding page #s into the army list at the back so it can be used kind of like an index to find the section in the codex on the unit you're looking for.

But many of these new style codexes seem to suffer the issue you pointed out where they seem to have run out of space to fit something in a place that would make sense and instead they have ended up sticking it on a page that just doesn't make sense. The Autarch rule in the Eldar codex is one and the 'marks of Chaos' in the CSM codex is another.

The Eldar and CSM Codices are practically genius compared to the "go here" travesty that is the current SM Codex.

I still dont see why they switched formats, this only makes multiple prints of the same rule, which is a typo/rules lawyering issue waiting to happen.

Yes, there is a truth, but we dont know what kind of truth it is yet. In any case, its extremely unlikely to be seen this year.

Armies Owned: Iron Warriors, Tau

Undead Titan Log
Malfred: Terminator Armor has always had room for extra boobage.
Drake_Marcus: It's true- that's why the Space Wolves love termie armour so much. The whole "bear" thing they've got going on is just a thinly veiled cover-up of their huge, hairy cleavage.

About the Tomb Kings. I read somewhere, and I don't remember where, that they would be getting their army book after Necrons for 40k and skaven would be out next for WFB after lizardmen.

Take that with some of this

Fixed your typo.
I also think you forgot Space Marines who look like knights, but I don't think they'll get an update soon.

I guess it's also safe to asume that, whatever they'll do to Necrons, you'll stay safe with painting Warriors, Scrarabs and Monoliths. I doub't they'll make new models for those
I haven't heard anything about a new TK book, but I think Skaven are most likely to get a new book soon.

I think Brettonia is getting an update in the near future....

One means the Mechanicum truly loses their gak, and the other means the Eldar realize that Vaul is really a toaster and experience religion fail.
