Does anyone agree with me that "pro" 40k would be awesome?

Something similar to how Magic has a pro tour...

obviously it wouldnt be a career.lol.but to have world ranks and such would be great in my opinion.

just an idea and i was wondering how many people agree with me....

Oh and this is no disrespect to amaizing tournaments like adepticon, the big waaagh, etc...

I don't think it would be a good idea. For one thing GW is already cutting back on their tournaments. For another, the company(or at least those in charge) don't see tournaments or tournament players as their big important money making section, they see the casual gamers who may only attend their own local tournaments, if they attend tournaments at all, as the main income for their games(and they're mostly right). Because of that, I doubt if done, it would be done by GW itself like Wizards does. Also, what would be good prizes comparable to the full play sets and prize money that Wizards and Nintendo do?

GW does keep track of tournament points for those tournaments within their Tournament Circuits, by the by, but only nationally.

I would like to see that. As you said, it would not be a career, but maybe expense paid so it is worth it to travel to every one for the people.

I tried to tell my wife when she got m back into wargaming that watching a 40k game that you are not playing is, by and large, like watching paint dry. I think if you instituted turn-by-turn time limits (similar to Privateers 7 minute thing) then you might have something. That's one thing that pisses me off about tourneys, there's an overall time limit but an unscrupulous opponent can suck up time and screw over a second-half army.

awfull idea!

the game lacks a lot of balance at the moment, with trying to go pro, people would get more rules lawyery and lists be even more dull

Oh good lord no!

The game is about socialising with fellow geeks. It couldn't go pro either...why?

Magic is a natural Tournament Game. Because there are no points values, just a possible card cap and a banned list, you genuinely cannot metagame. Plus, you may well have a killer deck, but from my own experience, that doesn't mean anything if your land decides it's high time it took that picturesque weekend break at the bottom of the deck.

40k however, has more restrictions. Some armies are genuinely harder than others, unless a list is specifically written to counter it. Thus, in an overly competitive situation, the whole thing becomes less about how you use it, and more about what you've got.

A pro model painting competition would be good.

But competitive playing would just expose the realities of 40k, expose the flaws really.
It would be ok if that lead to the designers improving the game... but I doubt it would.

Or a media tycoon who wants to see the resulting drama and record it all as Reality TV. It would be glorious as anyone can laugh at the obese, dirty nerds playing their stupid game.

It would only work with a tighter rules set and probably something like a grid system to play on to avoid measuring 'mistakes.' Could you imagine the fight that would break out if something big was on the line and someone stretched a charge for the win? The game is very far from what I'd call a serious tournament game and better prizes/rep would highlight that very well

40K is too unlike other games (MTG, L5R, etc) that have a tight ruleset where you can actually confidently win a game based on your knowledge of the rules and how masterfully you play the game.

In other words, there are too many rules discrepancies, ambiguities, etc with 40K for any real consideration to make a tourney where money could be made.

Öf course, people have had tournaments with cash prices or what have you. But just take a look at the Adepticon FAQ to see how poorly the rules support that idea right out of the box.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I think pro 40k is a good idea, but we need to go further with it.

40k should the cornerstone of modern society. Everyone should spend every waking moment playing 40k, or talking about 40k, or painting their 40k models.

People should resolve conflict by playing 40k, and killing the loser.

Someone should set up a huge 40k tournament on an island, and let people play each other, but they'll play each other on gaming tables that randomly spring up from the ground. Then, once people have accumulated enough points, they'll be let inside to play Jervis Johnson, but Jervis will have dice from ancient Egypt that always roll 6s, unless people have friendship.

In America!

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

They once tried that with a card game on a high-tech near-futuristic society on an island but it didn't work out too well.

Pro was the wrong word...

mainly what i meant is that a more orginized tournament circut.
maybe GW having a list of all the tournaments on ther website so you dont have to go searching for the bigest tournaments and being able to sign up from there, then with those tournaments (they set a limit on how many you can play of course) they calculate your points and if you are in the top whatever % then you get invited to the national or world championsip (or whatever they want to call it) all expenses paid and small money prizes combined with limited edition models etc,
not saying a cut throught $10000 prize tournamnet or anything along those lines just an improvment on the ease that people can locate and sign up for tournaments.GW wouldnt have to run them they could just be source to find the best ones and which ones you could gain points towards there season ending championship.then they could determine world rankings and the gaming side of 40k would flourish : D

GW DOES do that in America(minus the championship thing). It's called the National Tournament Circuit. Here ya go.

They even keep track of your points for you.
