I must say that having no hopes for this system before I read this, now I'm planning buying a few boxes of Uruk Hai.

Make sure to read the Replies section as someone played it responds. I'm actually very curious about this game as I have about a hundred or so various LoTR plastics sitting around doing nothing and a punch in the arm would be sweet. What's sold me is fast combat. I love me some quick resolution.

That the person who played it compared to Warmaster, and favourably appeals to me somewhat.

What I would be interested to see is whether or not GW adapt the rules from this into other games, as they with LotR when they made Legends of the Old West....

Could be a lot of fun!

Not going to lie....I worked for GW when LoTr first dropped. And absolutely hated it. Sold so many starters, at the time that was all that mattered..sell starters, and the whole time hated almost the whole game(I did like that who started off each turn could change) but hated combat and how powerful the "Good" side heroes were. And that hatred has sustained me for a very long time.....

But I am interested in WoTr. I really am. LoTr does have some nice models and I am hoping that the trays they release for WoTr will work for my daemons

You flatter me. But really, I'm just an ordinary guy. I put my pants on the same way anybody else does: I put a gun to the head of my manservant and bark Russian military commands at him until the poor blighter either figures it out or watches his brains exit his forehead.

I'm interested, too.

Glad to see that the local GW has a player base for this. I don't think I have the
attention span for a 24 man complicated campaign (John of plastic legions is a tireless
campaign organizer but I'm a restless attention deprived gamer and don't want
to fiddle with campaign rules overmuch), but it's good to know that Games Workshop Oak
Park has interest in this game.

I'm hoping that things like Ents, Trolls and other monsters are powerful enough to be worth taking. if it's biased toward masses of troops just to sell more toy soldiers that would be really terrible. Still, I'm eagerly awaiting a look at the rules at least. Could be get some LotR Orcmoticons? Just a screaming Uruk-Hai?

I'm interested, but I don't own any LotR stuff apart from a Gandalf that I converted into a thrall wizard. And noone around here plays.

Having played it.... wow
yeah- I've heard people say they don't like LOTR- and can see that it caters to a specific type of game- but WOTR is a very different game- its alot more fast paced, I'd say its as tactical as warhammer, if not more so- and is really great fun

*goes back to painting a bunch of LOTR/WOTR dwarves*

oh and monsters are worth it- they can do a hell of alot of damage!

Yes I can not wait to see the rules and read up on em. My local GW has the book but won't let anyone see it until next Sunday. Sooo once the 28th rolls around I will be reading through the book. If it truly does away w/ the atrocious combat system, ie Roll to hit and ALWAYS need 5-6's to do anything, and adds more tactics like from fantasy...i'll start up an army

A relatively complicated skirmish system is turned into a streamlined, mass combat system that uses multiple miniatures.

Haven't I heard that before?

Might be interesting, but it simply falls into the "unaffordable at this time" category.

Would love an Easterlings army or a massive force of Trolls.

I will say...one good thing about LoTr is that it is at least cheaper than the other game systems to get up and running. Even w/ WoTr it should be cheaper, for someone like me who has no LoTr stuff, to get started. I'll wait on starting anything that I still might hate myself later for until I read through the book

The redshirts today tried to convince me and others that WOTR isn't really just LOTR-Apocalypse but rather a game in its own right. We'll see. On a related note, if I were to base my IG heavy weapons in 2-man bases, I could use those WOTR movement trays for the other 8 men in the squad.

It is indeed a game in its own right with almost completely different rules to LOTR SBG.

Have a read here.

Wait, I thought that the rules for this were reverse engineered from the LotoW supplement for Alamo? Is that not the case?

I have heard that it takes some things from fantasy and removes other things from LotR and changes them around. For example no longer having to roll to hit than wound...your first roll will kill if the dice gods are w/ you. Flanking and what not will matter....so who knows. Well, i will in a few days when I go through the book

haveing had a read of the book yesterday i sounds really good and has got me interested in playing this there are so many combinations and special abilities like being charged by a terror causeing enemy makes you take a courage check which if you fail puts you down to fight zero combine that with one of the spells form the entirely new magic system which can put you at -3 courage well you see my point

I honestly couldn't tell you that.

I know LotoW and the Piratey one use the LotR Rules Set (because like the game or not, it does have excellent rules!) but thats about the limits of my knowledge on this one.

There's probably not much call for 'War of the Old West' but I'm sure it would convert to ACW very nicely. Using those dirt cheap Perry ACW plastics means knocking up an army would be a doddle and being able to 'scale down' to scirmish level fights with the same figures would be ace.

So were going to get new plastics with this but will they still be the same scale as the current LOTR figs.

It's Here!

My black box just arrived. Plastic Ent, Plastic Army of the Dead, and the Rulebook! The ent looks like a chopped up tree on the sprue, but having seen pictures in white dwarf, I can imagine how it goes together. Army of the dead are sweet. I can imagine we will be seeing them used by many VC players for whites, spirit hosts, and wraiths.

Off to read.
