Good armies:
Gondor & Arnor
Rohan
Elves
Dwarves
Forgotten Kingdoms (Ents, Hobbits, Great Eagles, fellowship, white council)

Evil:
Mordor
Isenguard
Moria (just goblins, trolls, dragons and balrogs pretty much)
Fallen Realms (all the evil humans, haradrim, easterlings and mongolian looking guys)
Angmar

Ooh, thanks for this. Fallen Realms sounds like it's fun, though surely they have some
odd matches in the list?

I read on the GW site, spears counts as regular hand weapons now, and Pikes increases the companies fight value by 1 and negates charge bonuses. I am doing Isengard with trolls! There will be no dawn for men.

War of the Ring Quickstart Rules + Scenario

Sounds pretty cool actually. A lot of infantry toops types are extremely similar though, so imagine setting up your companies will be vital as well as maneuvering/charging to get any bonuses to combat.

I like the pike rules.

I'll probably do an allied Mordor/Isengard force since I have those models available.

They also have the movement trays up for sale.

3 infantry companies trays for $4.50.

Anyone think these trays will be good for Chaos Daemon players who want to use their figs in WFB and 40K? I'm not really familiar with WFB so i'm not sure how the block movement works...
Not too bad I guess.

Looks interesting. Since Heroes are no longer nails in combat, but provide a wider tactical buff, I'd expect Evil to be the brute force faction and Good the tricksy one. Though the Ents may even things a bit.

I've gotten in a few games after hours and it's great fun. The size of the baord really limits your army size as a 4k vs. 4k battle needed a 12' x 4' table and even them things looked crammed. Magic can have a serious impact if only when used in combination with other spells. I've seen the Nine (all 9 nazgul) take down a Mumak in 1 turn from magic only (good rolls for the Nazgul and average rolls for the Mumak). Of course the Nine are almost twice as many points as a Mumak so what do you expect.

Hereos are not over the top. They can be vs certain units, but not everything. Much like Nob Bikers they have a counter so you just need to field that. I like that individual hereos can teleport from unit to unit so they don't get bogged down in one spot. It can make the points invested in them well worth it. Gothmog seems to be the best buy for the points. He's not the most powerful, but he's cheap for all he does.

I love the cinematic aspect of the game. Layer upon layer of Moria goblin can be bearing down across a 2 foot frontage (72 goblins are about the same cost as a well armed dreadnought in 40k), while the powerful Balrog can zoom up a flank with little to fear. Buckets of dice is appropriate. Bowmen, especially elves can unleash a hail of shots. 30-40 shots from your archers is not uncommon for an elf army with less thasn half it's points coming from bowmen. With that many dice you will cause rolls on the damage chart vs. anything in the game and there is always the lucky 6 (which may be needed more than once on some of the extraordinary units). Of course you better make sure those arrows hit home because when most fighting units hit the archers they go down faster than a $2 Tijuana crack whore.
