Just finished reading Watchmen today in my math class. Damn good. but you probally heard that. It's storytelling at it's best, showing the best of humans, and showing us at our very worst. If you need any help with this, just read about the comedian on wikipedia. A murderer, but also, a hwero. Alan Moore weaves a tale of straight up messed up ness to keep you from every forgetting any of this story. I can't wait for the movie.

Its every kind of great. It's better then most of the novels I've read. Now I've gone and gotten my copy out. I'm not getting anything done tonight.

I personally prefer any of Frank Miller's material to The Watchmen.

But that's probably just me.

Yes it is just you. Frank Miller is a god, but Watchmen is the the bible that the gods read.

I heard Miller's a total dick though. I have a friend in the sequential art department at my school who went to a con where Miller was reviewing portfolios. Apparently Miller was drunk, belligerent, and was marking on peoples original drawings with a red sharpie. I used to like Miller a lot, but his recent work, coupled with the ever more depressing mess he has made his life has made me lose respect for him.

Just because a guy's a douchebag doesn't mean you can't respect his art and storytelling ability.

Well, that's at least how I see it.

Example: Quentin Tarantino is a total ass, but Pulp Fiction is still my favorite movie of all time, and I love nearly anything else he's come up with.

Though I would probably get in a fistfight with him if he ruined something I spent time on.

Some of Miller's old stuff was great. But I think a lot of the credit for some of Miller's early work goes to his inker, Klaus Janson. When Miller started inking his own stuff, a lot of his line work got worse. I'm not saying all his stuff sucks or anything, I like a lot of his old stuff. It's just that his new stuff is terrible. Seriously, he compared himself to Batman in an interview. It's like he wants people to lose their respect for him.

Miller is good at times. Lots of other comic artists are good at times as well.

But while plenty of comics are very good, Watchman is the only comic that can really be considered literature. The number of layers and the different ways the book can be read are staggering.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

Math is important, but I would say the critical thinking skills gain through literature are far more important as they teach objective thinking.

Maths really ain't that important unless you're going to become a teacher or mathematician when you are older.

I think they are both important. It also depends on what kind of Math we are referring to as well. Understanding Game Theory, Finite Math, and Logic are very very useful tools when analyzing a situation, all of which require math to be able to approach in a modest capacity.

Check out Chapter V...

First look at the first frame, then look at the last frame of the book....

Almost exactly the same image.
Keep going a frame at a time, colours match, windows appear in both frames, guns, characters even stairways appear + many other bits and bobs.

It is truely a great read.

It is quite simply the best graphic novel of all time.

And it's going to be interesting to see if they can film it right.

Really?

I like Miller's writing, and he's not a bad artist per se, but let's be honest - he's no Rembrandt himself. Frank Miller would not be a person I would show a portfolio to. Him and Rob Liefield.

I've heard horrible rumours that they've changed the ending for the film.

If they butcher it, I will be most displeased.

You can't wait? Well prepare to be disapointed. Alan Moore will be uncredited in the movie as he completely oposes it's film adaptation. Therefore we're likely to see a gak remake of one of his great comics just like V for V and the league of extraordinary gentlemen.

Terry Gilliam was lined up to make this and eventually agreed with Alan's position that the watchmen was unfilmable so he abandoned the project. Unfortunately imo gilliam was one of the few people in hollywood who could have made it work.

They have indeed

Spoiler:
No giant squid thing, instead the "threat" comes from Dr. Manhattan built/powered machines exploding instead. Exactly how this unifies the world as one in a manner akin to the "alien invasion" I'm not sure. How film is supposed to be very brutal apparently, lots of stabbings, burnings and cleavers hitting "meat".

V for V was about more than just Thatcherism, more totalitarianism as a whole.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

True, was born out of thatcherism though and the film didn't echo hardly any of what the comic entailed.

From the trailers I've seen and what IGN has to say about it, I'm pretty hoeful for this film. Plus Alan Moores sorta an ass. V was an excellent film in my opinion, but Leuge of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a family sized piece a crap. But I'll watch it when it's on because its a good distaction.

I thought the film was a fair old stab at it really, I think the whole "note she finds when she's a prisoner" bit was well done and still very moving.

Did miss the LSD freakout and epiphany though.

You can call it an excellent film if you hold that opinion, but you certainly can't call it an excellent remake, I'll wager it will be the same this time round.

Unfortunately i feel they changed it enough to make it less about the Biritsh context, which the comic was, and more about American politics.

Don't insult the flag. You wouldn't like us when you insult the flag. Just look at what we've done to other people's countries. (Vietnam doesn't count! )
