Hello guys,
new player here. Im in a sort of a dilemma. Me and my friend purchased the assualt on black reach set. I kept the orks, he wanted the marines. We both started painting our armies and just had a blast doing it. But it's been 2 months and we wanna try a skirmish and I have like 10 boys, 1 deffkopta , 1 trukk a an warbuggy done and like 50 boys and 15 nobs not even cut out of the sprues .

So if I want to play a game I have to assemble the models first - but then, won't it be hard to paint them later ?
Thanks

They're snap together man, just pull the arms back off when you want to paint. I see no reason why you can't use your toys while you're painting them

A new day, a new time zone.

It's a matter of preference. Some people assemble first, then paint, other's paint the pieces even before they cut them off the sprue. Just go with whatever works best for you.

Personally I assemble models before I paint them and the only one I've run into so far that's been a bear to paint after assembly has been Sicarius. If you want to get some games in by all means assemble the models. As said they're snap fits so you can always just pull them apart and paint them later, just don't glue them.

Right- on most models, especially rank and file, you don't really have to worry about it. I find painting them before assembly means I end up spending a lot of time on details that are impossible to see. Or you accidentally get glue on something you've already painted and have to repeat anyhow. So assemble- have fun.

I almost always assemble my miniatures before painting. I find painting on the sprue or painting loose pieces to be very tedious, and it is very easy to screw something up while gluing.

1 more (stupid) question . Since I bought lan orc battleforce and 3 other boxes of orcs (just couldnt resist, now its all in my bedroom and I've been stuck for a week with my trukk), its ok to assemble and glue the models before painting, right ? As they are not the snaping models.

I never worry about the crevices in the odd angle that we cant reach with paint brush.

What we cant reach , the light usually cant reach = shadow.

So i leave it black like shadow it is :"P

to be honest, i allways paint them up once ive assembled them, i tried sprue painting, but that just means alot of extra work going back and cleaning up the paint job afterwards.

I always paint them partially assembled, and I think the paint jobs look better for it. There are some places it's going to be hard to reach once it's fully assembled, so I attempt to determine what's going to get in the way, and assemble as much as I can without it causing problems. This means on a multi-part ork I put together just about everything but the arms. For other models, other things apply.

At the end of the day, they're your models, do what you please with them.

The age of man is over; the time of the Ork has come.

Trukks I partially assemble and then paint. Boyz, just assemble and play with them now, paint at you leisure.

I always assemple first, base the models, black primer.....and then I paint them. Just like Luna Hound said, anything you can't reach will be left in shadow and the black primer is now a "shading wash".

Only model I have ever regreted putting together first is the Drop Pod. Painting the interior is a cast-iron bitch to paint when assempled. And you kinda have to paint it as it opens up.

Vehicle models often benefit from painting of interiors before final assembly.

Otherwise I always assemble my figures before painting.

I never paint the interior, with the exception of Drop Pods. Nobody is looking inside any of the other vehicles antway.

If someone did want to paint the interior, or another part such as the running gear which is difficult to paint after assembly, it's a good idea to paint it before assembly.

Yeah, like Kilkrazy said, unless it's something specific that you want to paint that will be a lot harder to paint after it's assembled, I'd recommend going ahead and assembling most things.

For Ork Shoota Boyz I reccomend assembling them first with the exception of the arms.

I find once you glue the standard arms on then it's very difficult to paint the chest. But then again the arms block a lot of the detail on the chest, so it's up to you how detailed you want the models paint job to be anyway.

I find most models can be fully assembled before painting. Just think about areas that will be hard to reach with a paint brush before you start gluing.

Kinda off topic... but personally I HATE playing with unpainted models. Theres just something about it that gets me. Plus playing with painted models looks so much better! Eye candy is important! Though I can understand if youre new and you want to kill your friends, thats perfectly understandable. But I still think the utmost effort should be taken to paint ones army. But that's just my opinion... hehe.

I think it's silly, personally, to even CARE if the OTHER guy's models are painted or not.

As long as they're assembled, so you can see what he's playing, that's enough to know what unit it is, etc.

Ill sign with the crowd that hates unpainted models. Luckily at the tournaments here that isnt allowed and at our friendly games everyone feels the same.

No problem if you wanna play with unpainted. Just don't glue them, so it'll be easier when you paint. Learned that mistake to many times. Don't let something this trivial keep you from having fun. if you never wanna paint an army, just play, it fine by me. You might not get away with it at a tourney.

A few reasons why I dont like playing with unpainted models:

It doesnt seem complete.
Takes away from the experience.
Looks unprofessional/untidy.
Makes it seem as though you dont care about the hobby.
Could just as well use pieces of paper that say SPACE MARINE on them.
etc, etc, etc

I grew up with these notions drilled into my noggin and so they are stuck with me. But really, I agree with them anyways. Though these are my opinions/feelings, I have no problem if 2 people are waging grey plastic wars with each other. I just prefer that when I am playing that everything is painted. Remember the most important rule of the game... its to have fun right? Do whatever you want so both players are having a good time

Don't care, so long as they throw some paint on them from time to time. A bit of progress here and there is nice to see, but overall I am much more about the game than the paint score. Throw your models down and let's see what's what.
