I've gotta say I don't mind playing unpainted models not a big deal for me. But I do of course find my models do better once they have been painted.
Can't explain it,I just roll better when rolling for painted models.

I won't play with unpainted models - but that's because of how I started with miniatures gaming more than anything else. I started with napoleonics, and you just DO NOT field unpainted models in that scene. Or bring your 40k models along to a meeting (you may as well bring along crossbows and catapults!).
Oh, yes, I did actually do the last one. We even got some of the medieval DBA players into it.
For those who say that unpainted models spoil the visuals of the game:
So, you can believe in an imaginary universe where religious crusaders purge the aliens/heretics and daemonic, where a fungus is designed to be able to use technology on an instinctive level, where elves can fly their spacecraft through wormholes in a wierd kind of space outside of reality that is populated by denizens created by emotions/desires, and that there are 'gods' that eat stars, but an unpainted model spoils the illusion.
WTF? There is a thing called "suspension of disbelief". You can 'believe' all of the other things, can't you just add 'virtual' paint to the model?

Nope, and I don't think about any of the other stuff you mentioned either when I'm playing a game. Painted models are nicer than unpainted models, no matter what you're playing.

Star Wars isn't a realistic setting either.
Nonetheless, the movies wouldn't be nearly as good if the people watching it had to add "virtual" laser blasts to scenes where people were just pointing fake guns at each other and occasionally falling down like they were shot.

That sounds like a personal problem for those that don't own a copy of the non-Revised Original Trilogy(you get both with the Special Edition DVDs, which is why I never bought the box set, as those only come with the 90's Revised editions).

I've almost allways played with unpainted armies, partly beacause i enjoy the game much more then modeling. partly beacause of time, school is unforgiving time wise , if its paint or game I will choose game every time.
That being said, playing against/with painted armies is much more fun, I dont think it "ruins" the game for them to be unpainted though.

If I had to paint all my models before I assembled them, well...I probably wouldn't even have a 1500 army put together. I always assemble first and paint after. In fact, usually I build up all my stuff, figure out what I like best, then rank everything into a painting priority list. Stuff I like the most gets painted first. The other stuff that is useless or i do not like as much goes to the bottom of the list (which usually means it may never be painted).

While I'm sure thats true. Most anyone would prefer to play with a painted army, but how many of us have the time or patience to actually paint the models before playing?
Yes, I would prefer to play with a painted army, but there is no way I would have the time to get an entire army painted in just a week or even a month.

i am pretty slow at painting and if i take too long i start to get bored with an army and move on to another army. to stop myself from doing this i have started to assemble my CSM to a point with glue and then the arms and gun are pinned on so that i can remove them to paint everything and then glue the pins and my CSM are done.

I am immeasurably amused by those who talk about how much they dislike playing with/against unpainted models in one breath, then follow by saying that they proxy models to see if they will like a unit.
Observer: "Umm, excuse me. I'm sorry to interrupt, but I don't think Marneus calgar is allowed to lead a unit of 15 Lascannon toting Devastators like that."
Player: "It's not Marneus Calgar and Devastators. It's a Mek and Lootas. I'm proxying them because painted models look better than bare plastic."
Observer: "Ah. Well, then, I guess that answers my question about why you have Space marines allied with orks and how unrealistic that seems."
Player: "It's not an unrealistic alliance. It's a proxy."
Observer: "Yes. Because that retains the illusion so much better. It's a great improvement over actually fielding the proper models, simply because these are painted."
Player: "Exactly."
Yes. That makes much more sense. How silly of me.
Also... just because someone doesn't paint, it doesn't mean he doesn't share your commitment to the game or the hobby, it means he doesn't share your commitment to painting.

I would "prefer" to play against a painted list, but I don't have any problems playing against someone that doesn't have their stuff painted. And I have battle reports to prove it! Damned eldar player with his gray tanks .
At this stage in my hobby life I have a lot of armies and actually several different painted ones so I always try to play with painted stuff. Everyone now and then the odd model won't be painted but definitely the majority of the list.
I actually structure my painting around getting an army to the table. Once it's got 3 color's and looks good from 3 feet I'll stick it on the table. This then helps to excite me to finish the army up (not that I ever actually finish an army but that's a subject for a different topic).
