I'm seriously thinking about one, one thing I really see myself doing is using it as a portable word processor. I use my palm for that sometimes but I hate the touch screen, I'd rather have a keyboard I can feel.

Plus the whole download PDF thing means I can take my existing ebooks with me.

Thoughts?

The screens on them are the only thing that apeals to me as they're very readble, however I've never seen one with a decent keyboard.

What about a netbook? They're fairly portable and you can get some with decent keyboards and it can do a lot of other stuff.

I'd rather do a netbook, but Kindles seem kind of neat. I'd own one, but I wouldn't buy one, if that makes sense.

I have a Sony Personal Reader. It's great for books but has no keyboard.

Production quality on the early samples is poor.

I'm with you Warpcrafter. I opened the thread thinking Kyoto need help building his campfire.

The idea is that it takes extra effort and time to write properly, and they’d rather save the time. If you can still be understood, what’s the harm? While most of the time a sloppy post CAN be understood, the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling is generally seen as respectable and desirable on most forums. It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

I'd say just go with a netbook.

Kindles are close to 400$ aren't they? But there are a lot of netbooks out there that are below that priceline, and they can surf the internet and do all sorts of computer things. I like the Intel Classmate Netbook. Saw it on Attack of the Show, it looks pretty decent and has a lot more application than just a Kindle.

The Kindle is great but is a bit more expensive than other ebook readers. If you don't mind the extra it is not a bad thing to have, especially the new generation 2's.

I wasn't interested in a Kindle until I read that you can use one to read wikipedia. At which point I realised all you had to do was put "Don't Panic" on the back and life would have just become a little more awesome.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I would forgo buying a kindle for one reason alone.

It no longer has the capability of an SD reader.

Kindle is starting to get more and more proprietary, something I feel is a major detraction from it.

The sony ebook reader is great but it lacks the capacity to quickly scroll around a page designed to fit on an 8"x11" page, something the kindle handles well.

To me, neither offer enough benefits to warrant the exorbitant price tage they have. I expected the price to go down by last year, and the price just keeps going up.

I love the idea of these digital readers, and kindle and ebook are great, but I think the amazon kindle is taking a page from the verizon school of proprietary finances and is trying to score as much money as they can with it by making it hard for content to arrive from anywhere other than amazon.

My father has a Kindle, my wife has an eReader, so I've played with both. The Kindle's limited internet access and built-in dictionary are nice, but the eReader is a much better size and is much more comfortable to hold, as well as having a better quality screen. I also find the eReader easier to use and I love that the program for buying/downloading and uploading books that comes with the eReader is almost exactly iTunes and can be shared on up to 5 devices that share an account, so multiple eReaders can share 1 account and all access the same books, something the Kindle can't do.

What I like about the eReader is that I can take it on holiday with over 100 books and a bunch of maps in it, the battery lasts for a couple of weeks, and it's pretty similar in size and weight to a trade paperback novel. The screen is very readable.

Yes the new edition certainly has much more detail.

They removed the SD reader from second generation? I didn't see that info when I scanned over the changes. That kinda sucks.

I hope it is the one with 8K memory and weighs 5 pounds.

The red LED are so sexy.

Ooops, I gotta get ready to go to the disco. It takes a long time to perm a guys hair. Is my mustache crooked?

I hope these polyester bellbottoms are tight enough to really accentuate my new t-shirt that says "macho".
