In a lot of discussions recently there has been a lot
of comments about not being enough 40k content in WD.
I'v thought the following for while:WD is not big
enough for 40k and WFB,as well as LotR.Maybe there should
a parting of the ways.... A separate mag for both, with
LotR joining WFB.I can say in all my years buying
WD that I've never read a single article or battle report
about WFB!I've never liked the rules and after playing
a battle recently,still don't!I do get disappointed
if WD does concentrate heavily on WFB or LOTR,just as
WFB fans will probably feel the opposite!!

I've stopped buying WD since it went to 8 dollars an issue. If they split the content to a pure 40k magazine and made it 5 dollars and issue, then sure I'd start buying again. However I doubt that would be a money maker so I can't see it happening.

Oh and by the way chaplaingrabthar, that is an awsome avatar!

I stopped buying it about 5 years ago. Too much LoTR content for me delicate sensibilities. Now, I only get it because I have 3 cheap mates who chip in and get me a sub for my birthday every year. I certainly wouldn't pay $11 (AUD) for it.

Really? I would say the opposite. Considering it’s a core game (yes it is and no amount of whining will change this) it never gets its fair share of WD. Even during a major release LotR is lucky to get 1/3 of the pages dedicated to it. 40K and WFB often get well over 1/2 of WD to themselves depending on what's new and shiny that month.

As for splitting up the magazine I think that would be a bad idea. WD has always been a magazine for the hobby as a whole and its not going to encourage people to indulge in other systems if they never see them. Besides and us and them mentality would be poison for the hobby as a whole.

Of course this means that there will be articles that your not interested in, but that’s the same with any magazine on any subject. How do think Historical Wargamers cope when there magazines have the whole of history and hundreds of rules systems to cope with!

I remember when you could open up white dwarf and find the rules for elder in 40k, or knights in space marine etc. Nowadays its just miniature porn. I think the last issue had a whole article about why buying more and more is a hobby in itself that all should engage in. And how Apocalypse is a great opportunity to buy more and more without any second thought presumably while foaming at the mouth and applying for more credit cards

@LuciusAR: I've NEVER been a fan of LoTR. To me, ANY LoTR is too much. Some fantasy I can handle. I used to play WHFB after all.
LoTR, regardless of how good the figures are (the Perrys are legends), the gameworld just doesn't grab me. The books bored me to sleep and so did the movies.

YMMV.
I haven't bought a whole year's worth of issues (with my own money) since the late 90s.

Fair enough if its just your preference. It just strikes me as a little odd to disregard an entire magazine over one subject which usually only accounts for about 10% of the pages.

I've noticed a unfortunate trend of people begrudging the game getting any form of coverage, which is bizarre as whilst there are plenty of people who may play 40k and WFB exclusively you rarely hear them critisizing WD for covering the other. LotR really seems to bring out the venom in some people which I think is a real pity. Even if you personally I don’t like it it still has the right to exist.

BTW im not implying thats your motivation chromedog! It's just an observation in general.

True but LOTR gets a lot of bashing because of how the game plays, it was like playing with an old rending army, just pray you rolled 6's and you would win, I jumped on the LOTR band wagon when it was first released and was bored quickly as back then you only had the Fellowship vs Goblins + saruman, it got old very very quickly and that old stigma just never lifted, I don't mind it in WD but then again I haven't bought a WD since BT were re released because that's when the mag started its downhill run

When you give total control to a computer, it’s only a matter of time before it pulls a Skynet on you and you’re running for your life.

This really isnt the place for a discussion of the relative merits of LotR's gameplay mechanics. Thought if you honestly think its just down to rolling 6's then you havnt played the game right. It's no more accurate than claiming Warmaster is just about rolling 4+. Besides the games come on allot since the days of Fellowship vs Goblins & Saruman.

But that neither here nor there. The game still has allot of fans who bring in allot of money and as result it deserves its share of WD.

I love LotR, I would say it probably the best game out of the three core that GW produces. Heck, its the ONLY reason I by WD. Even though I play the other two games I don't really care what they have in the white dwarf as long as there is something cool to do with LotR in it.

Even if WD became a 40k only catalog I still wouldn't splash down the $11 a month to buy it with my own money (no doubt it would just be about marnie-baby and how gloriously ultra his blue-boys are).

I'm not saying that LoTR doesn't have the right to exist.
I don't disregard the magazine for putting LoTR stuff into it. LoTR has less than zero interest for me, and I accept that some people will play it (just like D&D). I just don't read those bits of the magazine (mostly). Some of the hobby side articles are of interest, but I'm a modeller first.

It was a better read when it had local content. But this was before the dark times. This was during the time of "dave". When we had Matt, and Tero, Booster and Brian C (and Dave).
It was a better read when it had material for other games (although these games WERE all published under licence by GW), but those days are past, and those games are all owned by Hasbro* these days.

* probably an exaggeration. probably.
