This one I was watching just closed on Ebay for almost 80$US.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330308889872
An original two Land Raider box set (yes, they were originally packaged two to a box) went for over 150$ last week and numerous examples in various states of repair (they are notoriously fragile models due to the design of their lascannons) have been selling in the neighorhood of about 60$ over the last month.
Looks like I'm not the only one who prefers the older model! Wasn't it Andy Chambers who made the contemptable statement "The sight of the old Land Raider makes me physically ill"? Looks like not everyone shares those sentiments!

I managed to patch up one in a particularly bad state.
I used Predator Annihilator Turrets (the metal ones) to replace the missing Lascannons, and Space Crusade Heavy Bolters to replace the originals.
But it's not a great kit really. Iconic, absolutely. I like that it looks as if it could drive either way up. But the replacement kit is a massive improvment over all.

While I am all for RT era nostalgia, but I have to agree with MSSR. Chambers.
The old landraiders look like an aborted squat fetus IMO.
I can see making some nice conversions out of the old landraider, but the new ones seem worth the money spent in comparison.
Old landraiders have almost always commanded a high price on ebay. Since the dawn of 3rd ed, typically they could be seen being sold for $100 so this pricing trend is actually cheaper than I recall from those days.
I guess while many people do prefer the older style of landraider, it seems that there are enough that prefer the new style quite a bit more, or those two mint landraiders would be going for much much more.

True.
The thin peices that connect the bolters and the lascannons to the hull are very poorly designed and broken examples certainly outnumber intact ones.
But "iconic"? Hell yes.

IIRC, the days in which land raiders fetched 100$ or more was the period during which the original model was unavailable but the new kit had not been released yet.

To be fair, the two LR box set that sold last week was far from mint. One was still on the sprue, while the other was partially built and the box was in poor shape.
I've got two of the original LRs and am in the market for a third.

Exactly, hence why I said the dawn of third ed.
Since the new kit has been released in 2000, the price of the old kits has dropped considerably. Most people I knew only bought the older kits because they needed a landraider, not because they liked them.
But I am glad to see that people who do appreciate the older kits, while still paying a fairly high price, are able to acquire them far more readily than previously possible.

Fair enough, Hellfury.
My assessment that prices were up are based upon what LRs were selling for on Ebay a couple of years ago. I bought my last one for about 35$ or so.
I think the prices we are seeing now are based upon the increasing collector demand for anything RT era. Have you priced what Chaos Renegades recently for example?

Another thing (with 5th edition rules) is that the old land raiders are considerably smaller than the new ones.

Not all that impressed with the old model, the new one is much nicer. However, I definitely wouldn't mind fielding one if I had it.

Normally I'd be that sort of person, but I treat my RT-era Land Raider as one of the older ones in the Chapter, whereas the others are all of later design.
I do want to do a 'Land Raiders Throughout the Ages' series though, with one of each type. Mk.II Land Raiders are expensive though... silly FW.

I know when I collected Salamanders, who are by the fluff very good at keeping older tech up and running, I made sure that all my Veterans (Firedrakes) got the old school Rhinos. Not the Land Raiders though, as I just never fielded one (this was mostly 3rd edition)

I was one of the mad people doing the bidding but lost out. I've got one original still on the sprue and wanted another to match with the oop rhinos and oop whirlwind(with the box launcher) that I built years ago. I just have a soft spot on my head for the old stuff.

Granted I don't field or want any old Land Raiders, I just traded for an old rhino for that very reason: all of my other rhinos are the old style and it wouldn't look right to field a mix.

I've got one of them I bought back in '89. I wondered why my buddy wouldn't sell his NIB one to me for $20 last year. He probably looked it up on ebay..I think he paid $15 for it from an irate dealer who was quitting the game..
I still have an unopened box of Marines, though. 30 Marines for $20 still in the shrinkwrap.

the old ork battlewagons go for about the same, though due to being orks and only one to a box, its hard to even find lots to bid on.
I have three armies all manufactured before 1989. orks, space marines, and chaos. I just havent gotten around to painting SM or chaos. (oddly enough, if I ever painted up all my RT marines, I'd have 1,500 points. I've also never actually played space marines, so it would be a first for me.)
