Hello Dakkites, one & all.
I'm wondering how many of us are thinking about taking the Stompa kit when it comes out & turning it into terrain. I don't field orks myself but the sheer size & fun factor of the model suggests it could make a decent piece of terrain. I'm currently painting up lots of CoD buildings & I though "Hang on - what else could I do?"
I'm always looking for new projects to while away the weekday evenings and the thought of doing something orky could be a lot of fun. There's all sorts of modelling opportunities for a wrecked Stompa. There's lots of places for firing points, you can get good vantage points from up high & at the very least you will have lots of gubbins to use for other projects.
In my minds eye I'm mooting having one immobilised with a blasted off leg, maybe leaning at a crazy angle, or toppled onto one side. It would have been there for a while & so would be rusted, wrecked & looted as the conflict raged back & forth with one side or another using it for cover.
Ideas?

I think that's a great idea. I would consider cutting away some of th plates from the skirt like it's already been picked at for scraps. If you do so, I'd also put floors in it so it looks less like a giant hollow shell. In fact, you should take away a huge part of the backside, so it looks like it was blown up with some charges or something. Even put the head a few inches away from the body, with an arm hanging to the side, and one completely blown away. The chain arm could make a pretty good tank trap, if you laid it on it's edge.
I think this is a great idea. I may have to pick one up for Orky terrain!

I think it would be prety neat if the stompa had like stumbled into a building and died there.

Maybe the Orks decided to settle around the wreckage. There's a lot of room inside the stompa, it would be a shame not to use that.

sounds a bit on the pricey side for terrain.

I agree, but then again I have just got a sizeable bonus so I can afford to indulge a (comparatively) wee bit before banking the rest for leaner times further down the line. Having no kids to feed / clothe / bail out at college also helps.
Of course I may decide to make it a winter '09/'10 project as I will need to see what goodies I buy once the new IG codex is released.

I'd suggest getting your hands on the Gorkamorka Rulebook, and the other book, titled "Da Uvver book". Tons of fluff in there about this exact situation. There are stories and images all depicting an entire town in the skid built around the construction of Gorkamorka. While yours would be around the destruction of a stompa, I'm sure a lot of similarities could exist.
Keep us posted if you decide to move forward!

Or you could use it as a Stompa under construction.. the Meks are building the dern thing!
And that lets your opponents envision that they are trying to prevent the nascent Waagh from building ..

This is a very cool idea. On a similar theme, I also suggested in another thread that a Monolith being excavated would be killer scenery as well.
For the Stompa, depending on how it's assembled you might make it into 3+ scenery pieces with some creativity. The main body, of course, but the Orks could be assembling the head and arms separately which could be smaller pieces.

I've been tempted to make a Stompa under construction piece. But we'll see.

I think it would look best as if it stumbled into a building and brought it down with it.
