The last time I used decals was on my necrons with limited success. I'm working now on some AoBR terminators that I'm converting into chaos termies and I'd like to stick some chaos decals on their little shoulder shield things. I do plan to use a brown wash on them though and I'm not sure what would be the best result - decal than do the wash or do the wash than slap the decal on? Also if anyone has any tips on how not to make the decal wrinkle up and look like butt, that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Paint the area completely with washes highlights whatever, then apply gloss varnish to the area as this helps with the adhesion. After that put the decal in place.

If you are using decals in curved areas like the shoulder pads you are going to need to use some decal softener (can be purchased from model shops) to help with the wrinkles. You can also help this by making small cuts to the decal with sharp knife. After the decal has dried apply another layer of gloss varnish to settle the decal.

After the decals use do the weathering etc for your model.
