My FLGS recently told me that their GW rep was letting them know that all metal models would eventually become direct order only, not being available in stores. GW stores would be able to special order them for you and have them in a couple days. Has anyone else heard anything about this, or are they having fun with me?

Is kind of going that way at the moment.

Metal models don't tend to sell in terribly high numbers, even characters.

The majority of Blisters are now only available from Direct as it is. Whether this is going 100%, I honestly don't know....

from what ive seen blisters have been on the way out, most things are now boxed as such, so weather they will do away with them and make boxed / plastic versions im not sure.

tomb guard were in packs of 3 for £7, now its £12 for a box of 5, and i cant find the blisters anywhere.

If LOTR is anything to go by, almost all of the regiments are plastic. Orks are all plastic in 40K apart from kommandos and dreads/kkans and tank hunters.

It looks like GW is trying to make a solid 80% of their products plastic only.

tbh it wouldn't surprise me Plastic is alot cheaper I can soon see most things other than Special Characters or certain special models (UM Honor Guard) as an example staying metal.

Why those specifically? Personally, I'd like plastic HQ boxes for all armies kinda like the chaos terminator lord. Especially Warbosses, because the AoBR boss is starting to get old.

The problem is while plastic is certainly cheaper per model to make, the moulds are over 9000 times more expensive than metal moulds.

Although perhaps, they could make a Single mould for all the special characters of an army, and release them as plastic blisters individually, and as a box set (just in case someone REEEEEEALY wants all 11 Codex: Utramarine special characters )

I agree with your FLGS that EVENTUALLY the metal models will be direct order only but not for the forseable future (i.e. 5 years at least). GW has made great strides in introducing single plastic boxed sets to replace multiple blisters but they're only about half way there. ultimately, i do think that cutting out every possible middleman between them and the customer is the goal.

There is no way Character models will ever be plastic ( unless its actual large kit , but not blister sized ones )

the gw by me has drastically reduced the amount of metal models available in the store front in the last 6 months, so it does seem that this is happening.

@LunaHound: Never say never, Orks have plastic warbosses, CSM and SM have plastic commander kits. I wouldnt be surprised if character models made their way into plastic.

As I said, only way I can see them doing it is if they Made a Single mould for ALL the characters and then just cut them off the sprue and stuck them into individual boxes.

Not a chance they will ever make individual moulds for character models.

What I meant was specific char ( set fluff type , not the ones you can pick wargears ) like calgar , pedro for example.

Im interested in that idea alot, seeing the details of the commanders on AOBR , the details and potential is there.

Yeah, umm, how to put it politely?..

I've heard nothing about this whatsoever, and much information to the contrary. I order thousands of dollars each week from GW, and talk to my sales rep 3-4 times a week.

BS on this. My bet is the guy at the FLGS is putting you on, or has totally misconstrued some comment.

Long term its a reasonable enough business move and one they're already moving towards (after all how mch metal is already direct only?).

But I agree with the others saying that its not happeneing right away (and I imagine it will be a more organic thing so just watch for that blister space shrinking).

I would think that as they started updating more codices for 5th there will be more plastic kits produced. It sounds like IG are getting several new plastic kits, plus stompa/stormsword kit. We will just have to wait to see what is next.

It was leaked a year or 2 back (can't find the thread now, but I remember reading it) that GW saw their strategy as ultimately being for 100% plastic. Since then we've seen a retrenchment from that position, with statements by the likes of Rick Priestley that "there will always be a place for metal models".

Going to Direct Only for metal characters seems like a logical step for them. I can see the business sense in it.

Long term GW clearly believe there is a liklihood of a return to high raw material prices, and in distribution costs, and as metal blisters are more expensive in raw materials and more expensive to pick, pack and distribute, then clearly the way to greater profit is via plastics.

To be honest I haven't bought a metal model from GW for nearly 3 years now. They priced themselves out of my particular market two price hikes ago. I see GW as a purely "plastics" company aleady and ignore (from my wallets POV) their metal offering, so a shift to direct-only will have no impact.

(Out of interest to balance, Privateer Press priced themselves out of my personal market too. This is not an anti-GW rant, just an observations that "big brand" fantasy metals in general are now retailing at prices above what I am prepared to pay.)

There are plenty of companies out there making affordable metal models and if I really *want" a metal fix I'll buy from them, for some other game.

If there's a slot I need to fill for one of the GW games I play and it is for a GW metal, my first recourse is eBay. If I can't find it there, then I'll look to proxy or convert or just not bother. There's no frikkin way I'm paying over £10 for a single model. That's crazy talk bro'!

I like metal models, but I don't like them *that* much!

I can't speak for rumor threads on the internet, but publicly, GW has been very consistent when they do speak about it about the direction they are going in regards to metal vs. plastic. When GW people attend seminars over the last few years, such as Jervis Johnson, they have talked about how their eventual goal is to make an army like the 'spoke of a wheel' where all the spokes are plastic models and only the center of the wheel (the character models) are metal.

This plan was also reinforced by Rick Priestly's article in WD last month where he said essentially the same thing.

There's no reason for them to be misleading on this front, so I'm going to take the word of the people who work for the company rather than what some guy at the local gaming store heard.

At least for the forseeable future, GW will continue to produce some forms of metal models and make them available in stores.

I recall reading in a white dwarf in '97 that GW planned on making all core and troop choices for armies to be in plastic by 2000. (I will have to find the exact issue for reference purposes)

Well...its 2009 now and they still haven't achieved that goal. Granted they are really on the fast track currently with their plastic design and production, but I still think that we will have metal models for quite sometime. Even in shops.

When they start producing models in plastic that don't see a lot of use on the table or models that do not have a great use in multiples (such as biovores, tau pathfinders, space marine tech marine servitors) that's when you can start worrying about the availability of metal models.

Plastic servitors would rock. all the options for each one, all on a convenient sprue. I like that idea.

And really, first they need to do all the HQs in plastic. Plastic SM Terminator Lord, ditto on bike, plastic ork warboss, ditto on bike, plastic mega-armored nobz, plastic sm honor guard...

Oh, and ALL ASPECT WARRIORS (especially warp spiders which are LONG overdue for a resculpt), plaguebearers and horrors.... The list goes on.

The only downside is during this transition store owners get hurt.

there are a lot of units out there in metal and my FLGS complains they cannot get them. If you play Tomb Kings (for example) hearing about all the new Empire plastic doesn't help, you want carrions or a screaming skull catapult. And if the FLGS can't get them, you order on line.

? Not sure what you mean. By 'can't get them', do they mean they can't order them from their Trade Sales rep? Or that they can't get them at all?

I have no problem getting anything that GW sells. Mainstream product I get by faxing, emailing, or calling my trade sales rep. Specialist games, bitz, limited models, and those models taken from the mainstream section, I can get by faxing, emailing, or calling Customer service/Mailorder. Discount is a bit less on the stuff from mailorder, but availability is the same.

I'm not getting hurt at all on this, in fact, for the last few years, I've had access to far more stuff than I ever did. If a GW store, or GW mailorder, has an item, then I have access to that item. GW has been very accomodating in this reguard, and in a couple of instances, really gone out of their way to make sure that I can match any deal they offer, so that my customers can get the product through me, instead of mailorder.

Disclaimer: I'm in the US, so my knowledge of GW policies is limited to those in North America. Do stores in the rest of the world have the same access to GW mailorder, bitz stations, bitz ordering programs, etc?
