I love Guard, but I'm not too pleased with the plastic miniatures or model range overall.
I had an idea for an army using the plastic men at arms and the plastic Wizard sprue for some priests and psykers.
I have a few questions though:
1.Has anyone seen or better yet attempted this sort of conversion? How did it go?
2.Does anyone have a way to kitbash lasguns, or a technique for scratchbuilding them? (I'd rather not have to shell out for a rake load of lasguns)
3.Are the heads for the men at arms seperate, and do you think the pig iron heads would go well on those bodies?

I'd love to be able to do an entire Guard army in plastic, so any other suggestions for kits that could make this a reality would be great.

Thanks very much for the picture. Do you know of any users or threads on dakka where I could read some more? I've done a search but didn't find anything.

I could, but I'm hunting for a way to do it on the cheap.
I appreciate your help though, that picture is a great starting point for me.

careful with this one boss as you dont get many of the cool helmets in the box of men at arms like you see in this picture.
you can buy bits from ebay and bits services but the helms are still gonna be a sore thumb.

I remember seeing that army in White dwarf once upon a time.
Probably the coolest looking guard army I've ever seen.

Good luck with the conversions.

You could still mix and match with regular guard heads.

If you got really lucky you could get hold of lots of RT era plastic lasguns. I know I have lots in my parents loft I would donate to a project like this if I could even find them. Old style IG arms too.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

I tried Dave Taylor's conversion. In the realm of conversions, they aren't THAT difficult, but doing it on 100+ guardsmen, it could get tedious. So I modified it. Cut the men at arms body off at the waist and clean it up as necessary. Then glue a Cadian torso to it in an appropriate fashion. For arms, use Cadian weapon arms. And the head, use the famous metal cowboy helmets from the men at arms sprue. Thats how I plan on making mine when I get around to it. The beautious part about it is that I plan on a parallel army of Vraksian Renegades, so I will not have 100+ cadian legs in my bits box. So, if you have a friend that wants to use the FW renegades, then you two can split the cost of cadian boxes and everyone's a winner. Hope this helped.

Thanks a million for the replies.
Hmmm. I'd rather use just the men at arms. I reckon I'll pick up a box, see how they look, and then consider whether I want to get the cadian box too.

Thanks again, I'll update the thread when I've got some more to say!

I am doing this as we speak. i picked up the men at arms bodies off ebay for cheap. less then $20 US for 30 of them

theres three guard players in my local gaming club and i have traded with them for all there extra guard arms.

heads i have decided to go with the covered kolony from pig iron. $6.49US for 20

so far i have parts for 60 basic troopers and have spent less then $65 and i have the exact look i wanted.

Great, I was thinking of mixing in some gas mask heads for variety, glad to hear that they're in scale!

I really like the Brett Men at Arms bodies, I think they are the best option (along with Pig Iron heads) for making great coat guard. the main problem is they have their upper arms molded to the body while most other models have seperate arms.

These are Brets with trimed down Catachan forearms in place. You can also lop off the upper arm, file it and use cadian arms.

I love the hats myself.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Thats the cool thing about the guard, you can really convert the hell out of them, and itll most likely look like a for real guard army. Good luck on your conversions

I just wanted to say that in every Men at arms box you get enough of those cool hats to do the entire box (16 models) with them.

You don't need to order from anywhere.

I ended up splurging on WOTR stuff instead of getting the bitz for this conversion. I'm planning on using Maxmini's "I can't believe they're not Lasguns!" to keep the cost down, so I'm going to order some of those and then start, possibly next week.

You can make a pretty great-looking WW1-style army using Cadians and West Wind British helmets, like so:
