While still being busy cleaning out my desk and finishing old projects, I came across a project which I almost forgot about: The MIG-15 to 40K build. It’s buried somewhere in the guard section I think. I got a cheap (5 euro) 1/48 revel kit of the MIG-15, apparently one of the first and most successful fighter jets in history (Wikipedia).

I thought that the basic shape would make a nice Imperial Navy plane, so I set of to make some extra engines and do some remodelling to fit our greatly distorted 40K figures.

I planned to add guns in the nose slit and extent the nose to an eagle like beak.
Shortly after adding the engines to the plane I decided I didn’t like the general composition and I thrashed the plane, crudely cutting of the engines and tossing the remains in the bitzbox.

When I rediscovered it, I just finished reading a thread about an Ork fighter made form a WWII propeller fighter. I thought this was a great idea, and the somewhat damaged MIG-15 would be a nice greenskin plane with some decent remodelling and adding of gubbins.
I had to lengthen the plane by 4 cm to make it a decent size and I wanted to lengthen the nose as well, making a shark like nose with teeth along the side. When test fitting the plasticard for the nose I accidentally stumbled upon a different shape, an inverse teardrop.

I really loved this shape and it reminded me somewhat of old cars with the large grilles in front, so I added a vertical grille to reinforce this look.

I added a raised edge for the grille piece so it will look more like a car grille and the plastic structure behind it was laid horizontal to enhance the optical difference. It was at this point that a friend of mine remarked that it would look great to make those horizontal pieces wood coloured just like some old timers have.
I added another raised band directly behind the wood

The point of the tear drop continues to about half of the plane getting a wider angle along the way. This was really annoying work as it had to fit naturally, but I couldn’t figure out at which slope the angle decreased so I had to glue one piece in the right position, trim it to shape neatly and than add support structures and the other piece. It’s made from 0,3mm plasticard and not the strongest part of the model.

Of course I also added a cockpit with a pilot, the ork I had planned didn’t fit well enough, so I had to make a gretchin pilot. As I didn’t have any gretchin, I made a slightly larger one from a wolf rider goblin. He will get either a helmeted head with goggles, or only goggles, I haven’t figured that out yet. He is secured with a 5 point harness sporting a flashy goblin glyph buckle. His left arm will be holding a control stick. The dashboard thingy is from the MIG-15 kit with plastic rod and tube adding where the meters where.

I want to make the plane a Soviet/goblin plane, including a red star with the hammer and sickle. Although I’d prefer to paint it yellow but this is not really Soviet.
An idea for the base and the pilot I had was to have it soaring over a hill or mountain with the pilot waving to a guardsman on the top of it. However, I do not have any decently size hands for the pilot and sculpting one is beyond my skills. I do however have a bunch of hooks which would look great on a goblin, which could also be linked to the sickle on the star if removing the hammer.
Still thinking on that one…

Weapons will be added to the wing attachments, probably lasers. I was also thinking about adding a defensive gun turret, possibly with a limbless ork hardwired into the guns, directly behind the cockpit.
Cockpit will have rounded glass, added in strips like a barrel most likely.
I was also thinking about a hood ornament, but I don’t know of any orks/goblins small enough to use for this.
The steering flaps are going to be fully moveable until I know how I want it to be posed, then I’ll glue them.

C & C & ideas?

I think that might have been me , I was going to use a model plane originally , either an old 50's MIG or a WW2 Me262. I was allways worried about what scale to use , 1:48 seems to work . Are they engine parts from a land speeder? Its looking great so far , love the front grill , it looks evil. As you say like a car grill, you could push that idea a little further and have chrome on other parts of the plane. I look forward to the rest of the build.

That grill looks awesome, almost too stylish for orks.

I've seen that MiG kit here and thought about it. It's so... pure. It looks like the sort of jet Kyoto the 3rd grader would draw in his notebook.

I would have like to see it as an imperial plane.

Well, I planned it as imperial first, and I still have one full, untouched kit left which I still want to use for the Imperial Navy. I will probably make it different though, no central engine, but two engines to the side, shorten the wings and tail fin... I think. Maybe not, we'll see in the future.

Looks good, this one is 13 inches and looks like it would be good for conversion (for 11 bucks).

That's one of the coolest things about collecting Orks; the ability to buy an ordinary tank or airplane and converting them into something superb

Very nice

hey that looks really great. I wonder if other armies could venture out into other models and use them for there armies like the IG for example vodski said 1'48 scale and that might work I'll have to look into this, but great idea.

I believe that in 40k the figure sacle is actually different than the vehicle scale. For price reasons maybe, thats why they always look a bit small , leading to many exclaimations of ," you get ten marines/orks in there?!".

I have a few tanks, helicopters and planes lined up for gaurd and traiter guard. Mostly bargains as I think it's a waste to buy a 50euro finely detailed model and then removing most of the detail and bulking it up with plastic...
After this flyer I'm starting on a traitor armoured troop transporter based on a Revell 1/35 LVT-(A)1 Amtank.

Oh man, I almost want to ask you not to post any more pics. NOTHING makes me want to play orcs like converted Fighta bommas.

But do keep posting them. If I get yet another swarm army, it's my fault.

Smallish update, haven't got too much time on my hands lately:

The hull is completely plated, defensive gun emplacement is added, work on the gunner has started, rear fins are done and moveable, Backplate of cockpit is added.

All plating done and most of the space between the plates has been made big enough to make the weld lines later.
The gun emplacement is added as well, I was planning to make it removable, but I though it would be easier to make the gun removable and simply extent the cockpit over the emplacement when not using the gun.

This is a quick concept sketchy thingy in CS of the cockpit glass, just bands of curved clear plastic with metal beems in between.

With rear fins in place, two pins allow the fins to move until I glue them in the proper position.

The backplate, made with mesh because it looks cool. This was actually pretty hard to do, because the mesh I used didn’t adhere to the glue to well. There is some sort of oily coating on it which I can’t remove. As it’s originally used for filtering biological materials, I can imagine it’s working as intented

And the start of the gunner.
Yes, that’s an ork, a very unfortunate ork. I can image that a gretchin capable of keeping his own plane must be able to subdue an ork, which in this case is going to be hardwired into the defensive gun.
The guns will be hung on either side and he will get lots of wires, cables, armoured plates and general tech gubbins.

So, another smallish update today. Been working on the gunner, he’s slowly being incorporated into the plane.

With the guns off, the guns are from the boyz box (or however it’s called) with an ammo drum attached made from plasticrod + card.
He sits (if you can call it that) on a beakie bike tire, with just a bunch of guitar wire drilled into his belly. The guns will get some more armouring and of course a bunch or rivets. I also need to make the slot which spits out the shells and I'm planning on making a few bullet holes/craters on the tail to show the (im)perfect marksmanship of the gunner

At this point the guns can still move, I’m planning to keep them that way, but I still need to figure out a decent way to do it. (Ideas?)
I will make some piston like rods between the guns and the ork, and of course a whole bunch of wiring.

On to his head:

And on a ‘steek’ (somehow I see the way Jose Jalapeños talks as how a goblin would talk…)

The top of his head has been shaved off and traded for a piece of plasticard, roughly cut to shape, and (I think) a beakie bike wheel cap.
The entire right side of his face is going to be rebuild in ‘card, his right eye have been drilled through and two rods have been glued in as a kind of bionik/sensor eye. The left eye will get a visor using the round target thingy supplied with the boyz box. He will get one of those jaw plates around his chin with the teeth filed off (as a symbol for his submission).

That’s about it for now, hopefully I will be able to finish him tonight.
I’m also making a mechanical gun turret, because I didn’t know how this would look (and I’m still not too sure) but not much progress on that yet.

Ever since I saw this the other day I have been thinking about it. I have a bunch of old models that my son has hanging in his room of mine. Sad thing is he refuses to give them up. I wounder if one or two of them "vanish" if he would notice?
