I haven't painted or played 40K in about eleven years. I have a roughly 4000 point Ork horde that I am painting. I fiddle-farted around for the last 3-4 weeks with five AoBR boys trying to re-learn techniques and find a style. I am just really beginning my horde and I want to post my progress on this forum for criticism, comments and maybe some input. I also want to get better and regain the skill level I used to believe I once had. Not to mention that no army fights as well as a painted one!

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Here is a quick break-down. I have a whole-lotta boyz and the overflow mob (yes I have that many boys) is a Goff mob. I decided to paint these guys first as I'm not a huge Goff fan and I can work out the painting/style bugs on them. I decided to rebase my old Warboss as the Goff Mob Nob. His name is Uggrob. This is an image of the new/old Uggrob with the very first completed Ork Boy of the mob (his name's Pete) . It's not too bad for my first completed figure in six years and my second in eleven. The base color (black with white drybrush) is the designation of Uggrob's Mob. Lemme know what you think.

Considering your 11 year hiatus, I think that you have a solid paint scheme. Obviously, you haven't lost too much of your talent yet.

Will each unit have a different color drybrushed onto their bases? I'm never a huge fan of squad markings on bases, but I'd like to see what you do with it further.

Ha, thanks. If you could only see how many layers he has on 'em.

I don't really like how dingy he looks and am working to improve that as well as my metals. I wanted to show this one in fairness as the first and hopefully will have several more (assuming a leap in improvement) this weekend.

Yes I am making the bases for each mob a little different. I'm trying to stay somewhat understated though so they'll mostly have similer bases just a few color differences.

Thanks again for the comments.

Okay, I've been trying to refine my orkskin, metal and general style. The left most is Boy#1 (Pete). The other four are assorted out of the fifteen I have done to hopefully so some progression in refinement.

Hey Gofenris.

This is looking to be some really great stuff. I'm anxious to see how your truck kit works out in later posts.

Also-- and I'm not trying to toot my own horn here-- I've laid out several orky skin painting techniques in the following thread:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/228593.page

I am sure that the color scheme is too flashy for your goff mob. It might be of help, however.

Keep up the good stuff!

Thanks! Yeah I saw your RT style color scheme. Looks great!

Additional note: I am not a fan of the new GW tires with bolted plates on them. I always figured Orks would use large aggresive looking tires and treads and that's what I'm striving for. These wheels will also spin when it's all finished allowing my trukk to roll across the battefield!

In the middle of my trukk and mobs I found myself needing a Deff Dred relatively quick. I had this AoBR Dreadnought, a ton of bits (back when GW still used to do that sort of thing) and the desire to have a looted SM Dreadnought! Here is the finished result (sans primer/paint). I hope he is plenty killy enough for ya! His pole is my Old Warboss (now Uggrob) pole that broke off years ago in storage.

I wanted to show him off now as he won't be painted for a while yet. When he is painted he will be an old Crimson Fist (my nephews SM Army) Dreadnought. I like his non-standard foot and the fact he's tilted a bit. I was gonna even him off but I thought the tilt added character.

I think I'm gonna have problems with that pewter arm. It's secured in now with green stuff and glue but it is pretty heavy against that plastic. Any suggestions on how to bolster support on that arm would be appreciated.

Changing Tack

Well, I found myself playing a bunch of WH40K games over the last month (about three a week). The opportunity came up once and then I became addicted to playing again. So much so that I had to assemble units way before I had others painted. Initially this is not something I wanted to do but I’m kind of glad it happened.

Why? Over the past month I became more aware of how good themed armies look. There is something much different about seeing and interacting with armies in the real world as opposed to seeing images on the internet. This and battling with my own forces gave me a MUCH clearer idea of what I wanted to do with my army. I’m going to be changing the look (not the name) of my army into an all-out Blood Axe themed army for a couple of reasons. Blood Axes are my favorite and no one out there that I have seen, fields a Blood Axe army (although I’m sure they exist, I just have yet to see one).

I hope I can create an interesting Blood Axe look, not just muddy, blurry camouflage but an actual look. I’m taking a cue from Chrispy and I am getting rid of my themed bases (thankfully I’ve only painted a few) and going with something more generic so I can mix and match mobs of boyz as needed or appropriate.

A note about my custom trukk from earlier posts: I deleted the images and I admit now that I was too aggressive in my desire to start converting right away. The project was just too ambitious for my skill level so I have set it aside to build my forces up and gain more modeling experience first. I used my wheels to convert a standard Ork trukk.

Here's a shot of all the boyz I have been assembling over the month of April. This included (although it's hard to see from the photo) new and old Warbiker models, New Stormboyz, Old Stormboyz (including stripping), New and Old Kommandos, a whole mess of AoBR Boyz, a Big Mek, Pain Boy, assorted Nobs and Elites and beginning the painting of my looted Dred.

Here's the nearly complete (sans crew and magnet works) trukk with Kustom wheelz.

Here is what the extra armor and ram plate will look like. They will be magnetized. I am attempting to magnetize all Vehicle options on my Ork army.

Here is my Looted Dred. Yes, I know it looks as if it plays Sweeper for the Netherlands National Team, the paint-job is NOT complete. Also, my rusty red wash seems to have shown up very orange in the image and that white cutting board probably didn't help.

As I get closer to assembling the majority of my forces, the more painting I'll actually get done. At least that's the plan.

Got some painting done in May! Not as much as I hoped, however. I'll have to set my June vows a little more realistically. Anyway, I painted a mess of boyz this month and really wanted to concentrate on my technique and letting a "style" come though. I don't "feel" it yet, but I know I'm getting close. Still not entirely happy with my Ork skin. I have had some primer issues so as I go, those will be corrected as well.

Since I'm going with a Blood Axe themed army, camouflage is the name of the game. I whipped up three simple patterns and slapped them on some Ork pants. I'm hoping they look good and interesting if not too camo-ey. Let me know what you think...

I also did some work on my Kustom Trukk Tires. They are now ready for mounting (after I get the trukk painted, of course). Red 'uns go fasta!!!

On my boyz, I really concentrated on painting them but in retrospect I didn't really think too much about their weapons. I still don't care for my metals so I'll have to work on them. Here are some "blood splatter" experiments I did. I quite like them but please let me know what you think?

...and lastly, here is my interpretation of the gore being sprayed around after a chain sword finds purchase. I tried to present a realistic pattern on the boy'z arm, leg, clothing and face. Please let me know what you think?

Note: Currently I am exclusively painting AoBR boys. I am not worrying about mold lines or poses with them as they are cheap and are filling out my hordes of Boyz. My logic is to work out my painting technique and style with them so that when I get to my Elites/Heavies/Fast Attacks and Heroes I will have a cleaner and more defined style.

I finished up the core of my Trukk this weekend and decided to throw in one last May update (ya, I know, it's June 1st). This is the trukk minus the crew, armor and dozer blade/ram (still needing painting and magnetizing for vehicle and weapon options). I'm really pleased how the camo turned out. The red rims help cover the whole, "red 'uns go fasta!" requirement with the desert camo to distinguish it as a Blood Axe vehicle.

Here is a close up of the bed. I tried to make it look pretty natural. Please let me know what you think.

A close up of my motor. I went with blue Nitrous tanks and I tried to make the engine look oily with some last minute gloss varnish over brown/black paint.

Detail of the Camouflage...

I have to say that although the trukk has a high profile, I'm really pleased overall. The look really was changed by the tires adding to the Orky maxim of, "No two trukks look alike." The model overall was a lot of fun so far and it was nice painting on a larger model for a change. Now, on to the magnets!

Whole army coming along nicely... I did the usual thing with orks and batch painted nearly 1750 points in 4 days whilst wife was away and spent nowhere near as much time on detailing like yours...

Liking the camo too but the big wheels are awesomely uber - where did you get them from?

Please see my new 40k blog. I have joined the 21st Century!

Thanks for the comments!

The back wheels are from some plastic Tonka toy from Target (US big box retailer) and the front wheels are small R/C offroad tires. I can't remember the scale. The bearing caps are from an old Chaos SM Bike minus the spikes.

End of June Update. June was primarily a modeling month for me (as I wanted more figs to play with in games). Here are a couple of the highlights.

My 'Ard Core unit of individualized Nobz most of which have Black Ork heads (I feel it adds to the unit). One even has an ammo runt on the back of his base.

My 'corrected' Battlewagon thanks to Lemmingspawn's awesome thread found here:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/227720.page#525963

I am trying to magnetize all of the important bits like the Dozer Blade and Guns (That Kannon is magnetized, as is the Zzap gun) Also, my suspension is PVA glued on as I'm not set on exactly how I'm gonna finish it off. The BW is still WIP.

I hope you enjoy and I appreciate any comments. Thanks!
