So any recommendations for the loadouts on the scoutbikes? Whaddya think? I have a 3 bike squad. Do I mix and match or focus?

A locator beacon is absolutely mandatory if you have anything that deepstrikes in your army. Their Scoutmove can be 24", and then you can dump first turns droppods on their position without risk. When second turns reinforcements comes, they can have moved up to another 24" away.

The Cluster Mines are great fun. Keeping opponents weary about terrain and randomly killing off a few troopers here and there can be hilarious. If you can guess what terrain his eldar pathfinders will be deployed in you will have won a great deal of points (~ 3 killed=72p and a morale check) and hilarity right there.

Apart from that, you might want to give them a PF or a combi-melta to scare tanks with.

Alternatively, give them grenade launchers if you expect to have a lot of turns without turboboosting. They can be a nuisance for light vehicles or tightly packed hordes since they will generally be on different places than the rest of your army.

Don't expect them to do impressive things in CC, or to kill a lot of things, use them as support to get deepstrikers where you want them, be annoying and unpredictable or hunt down weakened squads. Maybe even contest an objective at the end.

Thanks for the introspective analysis. I am running with a couple pods and termies so they should work nicely for that. Yeah, I wanted them exclusively for the locator beacon! I appreciate your analysis! Thanks for replying!

I wish I could spend a little more time on some of this. We are currently in the middle of a flood emergency. I live on the border of Minnesota and North Dakota. Our river flooded badly about 12 years ago, and it looks like it is going to go again and even higher. They called that 100 year flood, wonder what they will call this one. My home may be an island. Warhammer takes my mind off of the obvious stress...

Hmm, might be time for you to convert some amphibic rhinos? Seriously, living in a flood sure would suck. I hope your house stays OK.

But to go back to Scout Bikers, yes Locator Beacon is 100% needed, and I would Suggest just keeping it nice and cheap, and trying to keep it from being shot to bits untill your pods can scream down.

Well, Unless the river comes up to drastic Ice Age Lake Agassiz levels, I think they'll be groovy on the main floor. Thanks for the well wishes though. I am ending my workweek tomorrow so i may stand guard over my pumps and wetvac the seepage in mt basement carpet...man I just got this house 2 years ago, wasn't really ready for this.

I'm pretty sure that the mines only go off if the unit in the terrain actually moves which is infrequent in the case of pathfinders.

OT, The 100 year flood is the flood event that has a 1% chance of occuring in a given year.
So, a 200 year flood would have 0.5% chance of occuring in a given year. A 500 year flood has a 0.2% chance of occuring in a year. A 2-year flood has a 50% chance of occuring in a given year.

But, since most water bodies are out of their channel well before hitting the 100 year flood, the difference in the height of flood waters between a 100 year and a 200 year event is typically little since they're in the wide flood plain.

Beyond that, there is the PMF - the Probable Maximum Flood. This is the flood event that is never supposed to happen and it has no frequency. There is also the 25% PMF and 50% PMF, which are still huge floods, but not as large. The PMF is used for dam design and lesser hazard dams can typically use the 25% or the 50% PMF event.

I hope you make it through the flooding without problem.

I guess a gotta leave it to Warhammer guy to throw out some statistics. Thanks! Its looking good the river crested south of here (Red River flows North) about 2 feet below predictions. I guess it's better to have and not need then to need and not have.

Hmm, yes, that might be true. I must admit that sounds like a very reasonable interpretation of the rules. I might have to be a gentleman enough to let my regular opponents know we have done it wrong :-/

As a fully mechanized tau player, the only scout bike configuration I fear is the bare bones, three guys/sgt with meltabombs.

If the marine player goes first, it virtually guarantees I will lose a tank (auto hit, kraks & melta vs armor 10). The alternative is that I start with everything in reserve, which carries downsides of its own.

That's a hell of a lot of bang for, what, 75 points?

Did the tau tank move last turn? Autohits in CC ftw.

I like to use them with Grenade Launchers and a Melta (grenades on the 2 scouts and melta on the Sarge). Yes a bit more expensive, but deliciously epic against light tanks.

I like to load 'em out with Grenade launchers, homer, P-Fist and mines... then again, I don't take units of 3.

I have to agree for deep strike armys locator beam is crucial but you need to watch out for things like jammers. melta bombs are always good and if you wannt to really scare some guys use a power fist but i ussually end up messing and scarring my opponents from medium range distracting my enemies from my key guys so maybe a power sword for fun but thats it really. also grenade launchers are really annoying but for my kind of tactic i ussually have ten bikers.

Thanks Guys! It may be awhile before I can get things done with my minis. We've been declared a disaster area and I got evacuated from my home. I am staying with a friend while my wife and son stay with my grandmother. This is a record flood for the Red River and i may lose my home...but I did the best I could. We bagged 36 Cubic yards of sand in the past couple of days, but the level is supposedly going to go over our dikes. Oh well I guess I'll leave it to FEMA.

Well, you cant actually give scout bikers any Equipment other than the Bike Mounted grenade Launcher or clustermines, so I assume you mean the Sargent, and no he wont get an extra attack since he replaces his Bolt Pistol with whatever he takes.

For some Utterly Bizarre Reason they Gave the Scouts both a Bolt Pistol and a Shotgun, since both are worse than the Relentless Bike Mounted Bolter I assume these were included to accommodate older models, but those 2 don't do anything regarding attacks.

i will admit to never having played with the new scout bikers, but i do plan on picking some up at some point, so tactics on here are definately interesting to me.

it seems to me like the grenade launchers should be fairly amazing for 10 points each. with relentless 2 frag templates per launcher per turn seems like a pretty decent volume of fire for a reasonable 10 points. seem like they should be very strong vs hordes and light armor type dudes (tau, guard, orcs, etc). am i off base here?

No you're pretty much on track there. Just keep them out of Close Combat and you should have a field day with them. Though Really they are best used in squads of 3 with Locator beacon to ensure your drop pods hit on target.

yeah the locator beacon seems like a great idea

although i dont currently have any DS elements in my list I have been thinking about adding at least 1 pod for 1 of my ironclads. Scout bikes with a beacon would be sweet for this but I have also been contemplating a squad of scouts in a storm and giving them a beacon so I can pod my ironclad somewhere nasty to tarpit a unit, then charge my scouts into the already locked group to break them with the cerb launcher leadership modifier.

Scout units on foot (or in a storm) can only have a teleport homer, not a locator beacon, so they can only be used to land terminators, not droppods :-(
