So. I'm going to be starting on painting my Guard that I've had for years, in preparation for the new Codex.
I'm looking for some ideas on how best to paint 'em. I'd love to do something akin to digital camo, but I'm not sure how to do that and then incorporate it with the 14 Leman Russes I have to work with.
Any color schemes and the like would be welcome, especially since the army will be specifically designed to go with a table I'm going to be working on soon(Tau versus Guard in a ruined city that's been bombed to youknowwhere, and having it be a muddy mess along the bank of a river).
Again, ideas are appreciated I've got alot of Vallejo paints that I got for Shadows of the Reich(Allied colors, German colors, the like) if that helps any with your thought processes.
I'll fire it off first, and state that what I've been pondering:
A dark brown base color for the uniforms and armor, olive drab camo jags with a lighter brown color as the buffer between the two.
Weapons will be done in just the dark brown, metals will be a dark iron color. The boots will be a muted dark brown color, and the hands will be painted like gloves in the same tone, as will the rest of the leather bits.
So have fun tossing out ideas, and if you see something you like run with it!

The more important question would be, why is there so much swimsuit?

Hehehe.... because you never know when you want to do a city fight and then go for a swim! you have to watch out for those damn eldar snipers.. they would peg a woman in a hot tub any time..
but a serious not... I did an awsome dark brown base and lighter brown dry bush for a good russian look. Black boots and then a little white for insignias and also some red.

We should see this on a person to have a better opinion on the size.
Never the less on topic matter now.
Square camoeflage has bin used by french army and believe it or not.
Has proved very succesfull.
They were the laughingstock of a big military excercis.
After first day of close quarter city fights the laughing was over.
They even painted tanks like that and worked out great.
So if your theme of the army is cityfight.
Go for grey.
jungle= green
Desert=
Desert yellow, bubonic brown, grave yard earth
Square camo is somthing i haven't seen alot before on mini's

Does anybody have an example of digital camo on a model? That sounds really cool, but I imagine it's rather difficult to effectively pull off on a guardsmen, a tank could be done, but even then I would think it's a lot of work.
DO IT, I want to see it.

Typhoon, do you have any examples of it?
It sounds like the French equivalent of the Multi-Camo, and I'll have to dig for some more info. But if it looks good, it might just work...

Its just basically camo but in stead of blobs... they are tiny squares. Think nintendo. Dunno how one would pull that off, but good luck lol

The science behind digital camo is that your eyes are tricked to adjust to the pattern (simplified) but it only works from a distance (or when very small). This is why it's so successful. Because of it's size IMO it doesn't seem practical on a mini. May I suggest a four color/shade Flecktarn pattern with Digital Camo colors for your IG Army?

That's alot like what I'm thinking as my primary idea, Go
And Jabba, I've seen the MARPAT stuff. I have a hat that I got when ordering boots from US Cavalry in it
But in regards to the colors, I do think maybe a color swap is in order.

Back on topic: You could apply the ACU pattern to the vehicles using a template and spray paint.
Start off with your basic color, and base-coat the model. (light tan for normal ACU-pat.)
Using a template cut into random square shapes, paint your middle color in a few random places in large patterns (light green for ACU-pat)
Next, paint over the middle color with your dark color in a few random spots that are smaller in size (dark green in ACU-pat)
Do your middle color again, in smaller sizes, and your done! This is how we did our E-tools when I was in the service (the glossy black entrenchment tools stood out like nothing else if we didn't paint them over).
EDIT: To illustrate what I mean, here is a template. You can create one of these in 30- seconds with Paint and the box command. Just print onto some cardstock or other thick paper and cut out the grey portions with a hobby knife and Presto! Spray paint template for vehicle digi-camo.
EDIT 2: I forgot to mention, let each coat dry amply before going to the next or it might become a big mess. And be wary of over-spray!

No prob typ some of us talk to luna more than most and catch things others miss.
Ot one could use a squared off dowel to make the pattern of the camo.
When I played battle tec we let paint dry on cheap paint brushes to make repeating patterns.

If I were doing a vehicle, I would just mask areas and use a knife to cut random bits out, repeat a couple times.
