Since the codex isnt out, im not too sure if asking this would get any answer but...
other than the 1 team per squad , where else are can they be fielded at ?
( i know they used to be at CHQ , but i think i saw someone said its been moved to Platoon commands? )
Also wondering how viable are the heavy teams compared to all these shinny tanks?
should the points be still used on them? or just tanks tanks tanks?
Any details appreciated!.

Infantry platoons can field them in squads of three teams, infantry squads can field a team, veterans squads can field a team and I believe that command squads can also still field a team.

According to the rumors of the new codex, each platoon a.k.a troop choicecan field up to 5 squads of 3 each. For IG, heavy weapons include two guardsmen for the weapon. So a heavy squad would be 6 guardsmen and 3 weapons. Each main platoon squad has 10 men; 1 seargent, 1 can take vox, 1 can take special weapon, and 2 can form a heavy weapons team. Unlike artillery, the IG have an exception to the whole artillery rule. At least until the new codex.
What each platoon is looking at is: 15 HW from HW squads, 5 HW for 5 squads of infantry, and 1 for the platoon HQ.
Tanks have distinct advantages over HWs and HWs have advantages over tanks.
For example, HW can take cover and in a squad you can allocate hits that will allow the HW crew to survive. You can have 9/10 men killed in a squad and have a HW still be usable.
Tanks in the IG have some of the strongest armor and are bristling with large blast and ordnance weapons. However, they can be immobilized, shaken, stunned, etc.
HW are cheaper, but the strongest weapon they can field is a heavy 1 lascannon that hardly does anything against most AV 14 tanks.
Most IG players will use both, tanks with a blast can decimate whole squads while heavy weapons can tear into lighter vehicles, destructible cover, or heavy vehicles.
I don't know if they're going to have an equivelent in the new codex, but in the current dex, HW teams and squads can be dropped within 18" of enemies with a deepstrike rule.If a player is willing to risk it, he can set up HW teams in cover and have them unleash hell next turn. Tanks cannot deep strike or infiltrate.
Both are excellent choices, but you can screw another player over by taking a demolisher, HQ, and some infantry in a 500pt game.

I'll tell what's fun, an IG assault squad decked out with regal blue armor, gold insignia, skull white cloth. All charging out into the enemy ranks, the look on my opponents face when they see this. They don't think I know what I'm doing, and the truth is I have.....absolutely no clue why I have an assault squad.

The gun's better, the armour save is the same, and all-importantly, Leadership is 2 points power.

That' what I was going for. A 40 pt unit is not worth it. You're spending 200 pts for 5 or 400 for 10. I don't care about toughness, strength, or wounds. Sure they can ignore most instant kill weapons with a 5T, but their armor isn't good enough to save them.
Also, in the current codex, they blow. They have nothing going towards them, but with the "NEW AND IMPROVED" ogryns your paying about 4 times more points wise. The ST increased 6 points, so I can understand that, but a point increas of over 20 is ridiculous.

I didn't know Guard could take Ultra's screaming baldies... If so, sounds like a plan!
Seriously, GW decided to nerf IG Heavies so *hard*, I'm seriously considering to stick with the current Codex for Apoc play.

Well, that was a bad description. Think United Nations colors, but with gold numbers and the eagles on the helmets and guns painted shining gold.

I thought it was an awesome description.
Of Ultras.
Now if you had said "second-raters in powder blue helmets with white insignia", that would have been a lot clearer

They fight the gretchin and win...sometimes.
But back to the HW stuff, I almost jacked a thread, sweet.
The 5th edition rules made most weapons besides meltas obsolete though. I mean look at the ability of a lascannon to destroy an AV 14 tank compared to 4th edition.

Lascannons are OK transport killers, but overpriced compared to Autocannon. Same like MLs. It's one of the "features" of the new Codex that really pisses me off.
