I heard a rumor that there would be 2 cadian shock troops units, a sentinel, 3 heavy weapons squads, and a command squad.

I'm inclined to believe all but the command squad. If I'm not mistaken, they usually put things in the battleforces that you can use a lot like troops, transports heavys.

I can't see buying too many extra battleforces like I did with the Tyranids, because I can't see needing more than one command squad box.

Of course, if the medics and banners are good and cheap enough to use in multiple platoon command squads, or maybe they come with a slew of extras like special

weapons, then I can see getting more.

I just wanted to know if anyone knew for sure, as it will depend on what I decide to buy now and later.

Yes. Exactly. Not only is it a valid source of special weapons, but you need a Command Squad for each Platoon you plan on taking.

And you have to assemble him limb by limb. His hands and feet are separate parts too. And his lasgun is rumored to be a bastard to assemble.

It's gonna be awesome.

This boxed set will sell, mostly because it contains a legal Guard troops choice along with a fast attack choice.

Well it was supposed to be the standard across-the-range Battleforce price we have now, i.e. £50/US$90. But there was talk at the same time as the Valkyrie price going up from US$50 to US$58, that it may end up being US$95. But I'd be very surprised if they did that unless it's an early step in increasing the prices of Battleforces in general.

Yep, same price, same contents... but you get the Catachan Command Squad and Catachan Infantry troops of course.

it'll be nice to see a boxed set that more playable straight from it. unliek the previous battleforce. Tho the price rises are slowly putting me off buying new models. might just ebay it if things get worse. feel really sorry for anybody wanting to start 40k with just pocket money.

I would've thought that there would at least be some kind of tank in a battleforce.

I guess that's what the Sentinels and the HWTs are for.

Why wasn't the previous IG Battleforce set playable from the kit? I'm just curious. It had 20 troopers, 3 HW teams, and a Leman Russ. What Cadian army couldn't use those in the last edition? It wasn't like it came with a Chimera, which were rarely used in most IG armies. The ruined buildings were nice too but perhaps not if you started an army by purchasing multiple Battleforce sets.

The new set adds the command box, and drops the Russ in favor of a Sentinel. I'm not convinced that it is as good a value as the previous Battleforce but it should encourage a lot of bitz sales or trades of the command box bitz.

The only 'problem' with the Cadian Battleforce was that out of all of the 4th edition Battleforces it represented the smallest saving over buying the contents separately.

Interesting perspective...I guess not everyone can just create a Cadian command squad from the models in the basic infantry set. Seems easy to me (and undoubtably to insaniak, who likes conversions) to make such changes with minimal fuss but not everyone likes cutting up plastic and working with putty, paper clips, and/or styrene.

On the savings issue, are we getting much of a deal this time around? Frankly, I have more than enough Sentinels (5) so I'll steer clear of the new Battleforce unless GW has something else in the box beyond the items already mentioned earlier in this thread.

With the old IG 'Dex is was impossible to to build a starter army from the battleforce. Unless you took some weird doctrines to take Storm Troopers as troops you had to field a minimum of 55 men.
2 Platoons with 2 10 men squads and a command squad each and the HG unit.

Provided we don't see an increase in the Battleforce retail price, the new Cadian set will be slightly better value than the old one and the Catachan one will be slightly worse value. But a factor of that is they are dropping the jungle trees from the Catachan set and not "replacing" them with anything, same as what they did with the ruins from the Cadian set some time ago.

The current battleforce is fine except your junior officer won't have a peaked hat.

I should point out that my comment before about the new Catachans Battleforce being less value than the old one is based on the US$ prices. Strange things happen in the weird and wonderful word of GW US pricing. It fares better in the UK pricing. Assuming prices stay as predicted, the numbers look like this:

But, again, you weren't supposed to be able to. You might as well argue that the squad box was equally poor, as you couldn't create a usable starter army from that either.

The Army boxes and Megaforces were for creating armies. The Battleforces were just to get you a bunch of models at a bit of a discount.


Of course, using the Combat Patrol rules, you could create a usable force from any of the Battleforce boxes.

I agree with insaniak about the intent of the Battleforce.

In any case, I'm happy that I don't need a new Battleforce. I can spend money on individual sets of the command squad, stormtrooper special weapons, and perhaps a Valkyrie and psyker squad.

New IG players can make pretty good use of the new Battleforce but will likely miss the tanks (or add them quickly). With the current minis, two Battleforce sets plus an officer blister, one infantry box, and either a Hellhound or Basilisk would make a decent army.

The new Battleforce, Wave 1 releases, and IG codex probably mean that new players need two Battleforce sets, two tanks, two Chimeras or Valkyries, two (smaller) infantry boxes, some type of barrage fire, a blister of commissars, and a blister of advisors.

What do you think new players should add to the new Battleforce set?

Haha! I'm glad I'm in NE, where all battle force kits have a fixed price. I feel sorry for the other countries where these sets have varying price ranges.

Huh? Battleforces are a fixed price in every country I'm aware of.

Well, from what I remember the US had different prices for each races' battle force. I see they changed that now to the $90 range

So if Im reading this right, and forgive me if I'm not because I'm not yet a Guard player. This Battle Force is a Platoon 'n a Box?

Yup.

Well then when I start my guard I'll have to pick a couple up. They sound like a great way to get an Army started, pick up two of those, and an extra Command Squad/ what ever else would be useful and you're good to go.
