Subject: Different IG armies? (need some advice and opinions please)

i decided to start up a small IG army for the 1st time.
ive never use dthem before, so its a nice fresh start on an army for me.
Main problem:
Deciding on a type: i dont want to be the usual guard player with an army of Cadian, IMO they just look like gak to me
i was thinking about going with a somewhat different twist (in some cases) and going with a different style guard army.
ive managed to select a few i like, but just want some opinions on them:
Vostroyan - Not too sure why i like these, they just seem very different from anything else in 40k.
love the gas masks and cybernetics that alot of them have, and love the style of the guns (wooden parts etc etc)
also, the colour scheme is pretty good, and i wouldnt have to change it.
Catachan - Another type of guard you rarely see here now a days
allways liked them, great models (ok, arms are somewhat large) but they just seem to stand out well, and allow for some fun cammo painting.
DKOK - pretty common now, but due to price they are not very common (thank god) i love the look of them, they stand out very well, weapons, armour, it all looks great.
Renegades - who doesent like guard with a twist?
once again, more gas masks, great detail on the models.
so, now i just need help deciding on a type
also, if anyone has the spare time would it be possible to post a rough 750 point list please?
i would like to go weapon team heavy and try and leave out vehicles if possible (allthough i want to try and drag in plenty of sentinels if possible)
thanks in advance
-JD

Same advice I give everyone:
If you go Cadian or Catachan, buy the 20-man boxes now because soon they'll be gone and you'll be paying 160% (+/-) the price per model when you get 10-man boxes.

but price isnt really an issue.
Vostroyan, DKOK and traitors are all metal or resin and more expensive anyway, so a smaller box isnt the end of the world to me.
allthough some new weps in the cat. box would be nice, just flamers is a bit annoying.

Sorry, no recuts.
If you're going Voystroyan or DKOK then yeah, it doesn't matter, but if you do end up going with Catachan, get some now rather that later - if only so you can have a ready supply of spare Catachans to make use of all the spare bitz in the Command Squad Box.

I think your best bet is to wait until the new codex comes out next month. I would get some of the 20 man boxes now just to have spare parts to muck about with and then make your decisions based on what they've done with the book.
One of the reasons why people don't play Catachans is because the models are so horribly out of scale. The arms are way too big for the bodies of the models, and the arms also lack a lot of detail. The sprues are over 10 years old and they really show their age in terms of how far GW has come in terms of putting detail into their plastics.
I personally love the Cadian models. They're very streamlined, very detailed, well scaled, have good poses, and are very easy to modify. Wondering why you don't like them.

ill possibly start buying some troops once i can decide on which ones im going for
thats what i like about catachans, they look very different, so what about scale? meathead marines also fall way out of scale
its just the fun you can have while making a catachan army, tattoo's, cigars, funny extras that can be added to build character.
cadians just seem to plain, its your basic rank and file infantry models (the IG version of smurfmarines)
im leaning towards the Vostroyan more so at the moment due to the fact that no one collects them
i like to have an individual army that not many people go for.

You can't go wrong with DKOK or Vostroyia for pure cool factor.
Personally I went with DKOK, but that's primarily because I hate metal (Steel Legion is just SO sexy).
This may or may not be a factor for you, but the first thing I noticed when I switched from Cadians to DKOK is that I no longer really had ANYTHING to buy at typical GW stores aside from paint and glue. The convenience of zipping over to my local GW to grab a box of infantry to work on for the night was sorely missed.
Though this might now be a concern for any army that's not catachan or cadian.
I can't believe you don't like Cadians, but something to remember: Cat/Cad = Future and continued support from GW. And plastics. JD21290 wrote:
so it will be the most expensive choice, just out of curiosity, how many points would this lot be roughly?
brought the heavies seperate since i hate the running ones in the units of 3 :K
Old codex or new codex?
750 old
650 new (Depending on whether you make that commissar a lord)
provided they're armed WYSIWYG

Assuming that this isn't a 4/1 thing:
- Vostroyan - if this is your first choice then go for it. The models aren't common, and they are very distinctive. IMO, like ASL, they're kind of a half step off from the normal 40k universe. Thematically, I think you would want tanks here.
- Catachans - I don't like the headbands or vests, so these models just don't do anything for me. OTOH, I'd be inerested in doing something with Necromunda models... Hmm...
- DKOK - of all the armies you listed, I like the look of these best. Being FW resin, they're not cheap, and risk breakage more than a metal army. I think DKoK wants to be Mechanized. Which is not a bad route at all.
- Renegades - you can do a lot with these, and give you the most theme freedom.
So in summary:
- Vostroyans for playability / durability
- DKoK for the models
- Renegades for the theme / fluff
Pick whats most important and go forward!

from what ive seen and heard so far then i may have to add some tanks into the list
(i just hate painting large bulky chunks of plasteel)
allthough im sure i could play about with some ideas to make them less plain.
Alex: thanks alot for that points add up
thats pretty much dead on what i need to aim for.
i figured that this army will be expensive, so ive decided to start playing small games until i get a feel for them and how best to use them, then i can move on to expanding the army.
i dont often go to my local GW as i prefer to order online instead (cheaper and alot easier and quicker), so thats not a problem.
as said earlier, i just feel that cadians are too plain and boring.
another thing that came into it is the fact im not keen on painting plastic too much, i prefer to paint metal and resin
john: thanks for this, thats helped quite a bit
any chance of a few vehicle suggestions please and what you would advise?
i think im starting to lean more towards vostroyans now
not sure why, they just feel very different to all other guard.
luckily GW has them on the site for £20 per 10 (including sarge, missile and flamer)

If you're adding tanks, there are only really 3 things you should consider:
- Demolisher - in your face S10 AP2 pie with AV11 rear
- Basilisk - long-ranged indirect S9 AP3, but immobile
- Leman Russ - semi-mobile, but only S8 AP3
For a starter, you might get one of each. Then double-down as you grow the army. Personally, I like Demolishers for the sheer utility.

demolisher seems to take it when it comes to those 3
anything in the guard armoury that can ignore cover saves?
i rather have something hitting at S4 or 5 with a pie and ignoring saves than a S10 pie.

S10 pie isn't the biggest benefit of Demolisher - it's AV11 in HtH, with AP2 pie.
Hellhounds ignore saves, but they're only AP4. I think there's a new Russ that will also ignore saves, along with the Griffon.

If you're willing do do some conversion work, there may be some other options you haven't considered.
Cadian parts can be mixed with lots of other kits to produce unique styles of guardsmen. Warhammer Fantasy troops provide a lot of options for alternate parts. This may be what you had in mind when you mentioned renegades, but it's possible to make them uniform enough to be viable as loyalists as well.
I've been working on some built from Cadians and Empire Militia, and I've seen some really nice ones made from Cadians and Bretonnian Men-at-Arms. Some of the Elves' and Dark Elves' troops might also work (although you'd probably want to use heads from the 40K kits, as most of the elves have strange hats).

Traitors use the Cadian boxes to best effect.
But, DKOK are pure resin for one squad, so...
You can decide on those prices
I'd suggest not going too crazy on lists right now, with how soon the book is hitting.

100% right there HBMC
i just like the look of them, which is why im waiting to borrow a spare unit of 10 guard from a friend and convert them (mainly using GS for gas masks, chest plates etc)
if i can do it that way not only is it cheaper, but its alot more fun.
