This happened last night at my local GW

Picture the scene...
The game is Capture and Hold, the match is 1000 points, on one side is a swarm of Tyranids on the other (my side), a Black Legion army led by Abaddon the Despoiler.
In the first turn a Broodlord infiltrates with a retinue of Genestealers...
Abaddon died in the first turn.

Suffice to say, my entire remaining force was destroyed by the rest of the Tyranids including a Hive Tyrant and a Carnifex, causing my opponent to win by annihilation rather than Capture and Hold.

There are four possible reasons for this:

1. I forgot that Abaddon has +D6 attacks and is immune to instant kill.
2. The broodlord was a genuine match for the Heir of Horus.
3. I'd bought and assembled Abaddon about 5 minutes earlier and hadn't painted him yet.
4. I'm a terrible player and should be banished from the hobby.

Any thoughts?

Broodlord does not fleet.

Vision -> infiltrate is restricted to 18".

Seems like your deployment was quite poor, enabling the broodlord to be exactly 12" from abaddon.

All in all, reasons 1, 2 and 4. (bringing abaddon to 1000 pts deserves goulag)

I agree, I blame myself and my inexperience due to this being the first time I played a game of 40k in four years, and probably my 8th game of 40k ever.
(I was always an LOTR man)
I guess I have to make mistakes if I'm gonna learn from them.

Do you mean the Soviet war camp? In which case: too harsh

Considering I've been on the receiving end of Abbadon tearing into my Tyranid army, I am not at all sad to hear this

Broodlord is a good counter to the warmaster -- since he is I7. That dammable I6 S8 is what is so frustrating for a tyranid player. Broodlord with implant attack or some other upgrades should be able to toast abby -- but anything else is prolly gonna get owned by him.

snoogums: "Just because something is not relavant doesn't mean it goes away completely."

Iorek: "Snoogums, you're right. Your arguments are irrelevant, and they sure as heck aren't going away."

It happens man. It sucks but it happens. I try to not bring SC into a game of 1000pts. Unless I know the other player is only taking weaklings in numbers. Then I might chance it and bring the badass.

That's what you get when you bring Abbadon into such a small game. But seriously, DON'T SET UP YOUR GUYS SO THEY CAN GET ASSAULTED 1st turn! Just keep 'em back and set up a suicide squad to get eaten by the 'Stealers and then shoot him up!

Hello Guardsmen, look at your Leman, now back to mine, now back to your Leman, now back to mine. Sadly, your Leman isn't mine, but if they stopped using standard engines and switched to Lucifer Pattern, they could move like they're mine. Look down, back up. Where are you? Your in a battlefield with the Rhino your Leman could move like. Whats in your hand, back at me, I have it, it's the fire control for the Twin-linked Assault Cannons aimed at you. Look again, it's a Deep-Striked Land-Raider. Anything is possible when your Tanks move like Blood Angels, and not like Guardsmen. I'm on a Baneblade.

It's the curse of Abaddon. I used him in a 1750 last week and every single roll for his demon weapon came up a 1.

Just a question, how could the Broodlord have gotten into assault on the first turn? Broodlord cannot fleet, and Infiltrate requires a setup of more than 12 inches away, as the crow flies, if they can't be seen. The Broodlord and retinue should have gotten, at most, to about a millimeter in front of Abaddon and then failed to get into assault.

It's true, if a unit does not have Fleet, or a longer charge range, then there is no way you can get a 1st turn charge.

You have to set up *more* than 12" away if you're out of LOS, or *more* than 18" if within LOS.
