So I was reading the thread about the most annoying thing a staffer has said to you in Discussions, and one of JD's posts caught my eye.
(link: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/235002.page#642746 )

Anyway, I reckon said staffer probably shouldn't have been employed in a retail job without being able to speak english, but then if he was, it's the fault of whoever hired him.

But the idea that people should have to speak english to live in a country, even england is absurd. I mean, what about welsh? What about scots gaelic, or irish (in northern ireland)? I love the fact that Dublin has lots of different people in it now, I enjoy hearing different languages and seeing different cultures as I walk around. It makes me feel like part of the wider world.

I agree, people in service industry jobs need to be able to do their jobs, so they should have english or whatever is the majority language. That makes sense. But people who arrive without english can learn, and probably would learn very fast! If you're annoyed by not understanding polish or whatever, then you could learn it. It's not hard to learn enough to know when someone is talking about you.

What do ye think?

I wouldn't read much into a single internet forum anecdote.

Most people who immigrate to Britain from Poland and other Euro countries speak better English than what we do, innit.

Difficult to think a staff member could pass an interview in a language he didn't speak at all.

I wasn't thinking britain was filled to the brim with that sort of thing, but the attitude is interesting and crops up in more places than the UK- over here too, for example.

"And what is wrong with their life? What on earth is less reprehensible than the life of the Levovs?"
- American Pastoral, Philip Roth

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

Why this sort of thing would never happen in the USA.
