Im currently interested in starting to play SM. however Im not sure as to which chapter to go with. Any ideas????

I would recommend that you look around the GW site, they have some basic information about the different chapters, I'm sure. Codex: Space Marines is the newest one, so any chapter that uses those rules will have the most up to date rules. The other chapters have older rules, but have their own unique twists that make them quite a bit different from the basic marines.

you could find that lexicon thing online, browse the images of color schemes, pick one you like, go with that chapter

I'm personally a fan of the DIY chapter. You could go ahead and paint yourself up a batch of ultramarines, but the question is WHY? Why would you want YOUR army to look like GW's? Are you a GW employee? Probably not.
Be a bit creative. Nobodys gonna get on your case if your codex chapter uses templar bits and happens to be painted snot green and midnight blue. One of the appeals for me, anyhow, is the ability to not look like any other army out therre. My marines use the templar codex, templar bits, but are painted slightly like Dark Angels 1st company (bleached bone armor, red gore shoulders with black trim reather than DA green).
Fluff wise, they're a sucsessor of the DA from the cursed 21st founding.
WHY? Cuz I like bothe DA and BT codexes. I even like the SM codex, and I'll use it too, if I want.
I guess my suggestion is this: do what you want. If you want to make a White Scars force, go for it. If you want to paint them purple and black, by all means do it. You don't have to do what GW sez.

If you haven't anything specific in mind, I'd suggest Relictors - awesome Fluff for basic SM, and not so often seen on the board as to be annoying.

I'd suggest making your own chapter,you'll get more of a kick out of it.
But! If you do, spend some time working out a colour scheme,because once
you start, there's no turning back!

Make your own chapter and expand your army and use them as you see fit.

I would have a hard time playing again someone with an Ultramarine army which counts as Blood Angels for instance.

But if you paint your army with Tentacle Pink and Skull White and call them the Hello Kitty Marines and play them with Dark Angel rules I would think it's ok. However I would be in doubt about your mental health
