Subject: 5th Edition Codices, current list?

Which Codices are 5th edition updated and how do I tell?
I did a bunch of searches on google but didn't find a detailed list. The only ones I know for sure that are fully 5th edition are the Space Marines, Orks, and the Imperial Guard are coming out soon.
I just got my Ork army, and my friend is interested in the game, but he doesn't want to wait for a codex so he's going to choose from the ones already released and he's only a little interested in Space Marines, and doesn't do Orks.

Wrong. Daemons was written solely for 5th edition. It came out like a month before the 5th ed rulebook was out, and as such was written for the new ruleset. If you read it carefully you'll notice a lot of wordings that don't actually work in 4th editon (such as "counts as being armed with offensive grenades")
But otherwise you're on the money, though some might debate if Eldar and DA were really written with 5th ed in mind.

Eldar for sure was not written with 5th edition in mind. Their codex was released in October 2006 and 5th Edition in July 2008. I really don't think they knew exactly what rules they were going to change 2 years prior to the new core rulebook. The codici that function well in 5th edition (and are therefore most likely to be written with the new edition in mind) are:
-Chaos Space Marines
-Orks
-Chaos Daemons
-Space Marines
-Imperial Guard (next month)

Aye that's what I was pretty much getting at. CSM and Orks are semi-compatible (look at the mess the Waaaagh! rule has caused, so much for 5th ed compatibility there ) while Daemons, Space Marines and Guard have all been written for a full and complete 5th edition ruleset.
I mean, Daemons is so utterly perfect it still hasn't gotten an FAQ from GW. How perfect must that make it!

Not meaning to hijack the thread or anything but what Waaaagh issue for the orks? Also I'd say that Daand eldar were probably written with 5th in mind but it was 5th at the time of thier writing (think 'proto5thed) and that 5th changed a lot between then and its time of release.

When Codex: Orks was written, the Waaagh! rule worked like this:
You Call the Waagh! All your orks get Fleet of Foot
You roll 1d6 for your fleet of foot movement
On a 1 you take a wound.
Now in 5th because fleet is utterly different, the rule doesn't work so much any more, because you can run with all your orks, call the waaagh and give everybody fleet (which just lets them assault after running) thereby sidestepping the wound. Also Ghazguls one used to let you count your fleet roll as a 6, but since there is no fleet roll anymore, without an errata from GW, RaW you have to roll for Ghazguls special Waaaagh!

One could say that the digital Blood Angels codex (such as it is) is a 5th edition codex because it was, unique among all the codices, a codex given a minor update for 5th edition. Whether it was designed with 5th edition in mind when it was released in 2007 is another question I think.

Sorry for the threadjack, but does anyone actually call anyone on this? I kow that is how it is written, but for rules as intended purposes shouldn't you still take the wound on a 1 and automatically get a 6 on the roll if using Ghaz?

I can't remember the source name on this but I seem to remember someone from a now shut down phone-in help desk telling me that:
The Eldar were laid out in the style that GW wanted for 5th ed but their rules weren't written for it. It had the removed wargearlist/dumbing down format that GW said it wanted for 5t edition but the actual rules were pure 4th edition.
Don't know if that helps.

Wow, that's a bit cynical isn't it? Having Played from the very tail-end of 2nd and the start of 3rd, I can tell you I love the new Codex Format. It's not dumbed down at all. It's streamlined, much easier to use and a lot more intuitive.

It must be that I've been listening to HBMC to much lately.
Or maybe I'm just getting old and cynical.
You do bring up a point, though. To be completely honest, the rule writing latlely has been much better than in the past(May I reference everyone to the Tau Codex?) Love my army hate how slap dash this book is.

Well to be honest the Tau codex got what it deserved. It was a new race intended to whore 40k off to the Japanese, which got not one but TWO codex's! If Dark Eldar were updated that often we'd have had about 8 Codex's by now.
Not to mention GW totally messing up the language in the 2nd codex, since they wrote it with the assumption that everyone had the old codex as well.

Funny, I'm awfully Large hairy and caucasian for a Japanese. I must be Jet from Cowboy BeeBop.
And to be truthful, no codex should have unit and wargear entries so poorly written. No matter how you feel about the army, it sets a bad precedent for following Codices. The brits start slacking on their quality and everyone will think they are Irish.
Just kidding, I'm Irish decended. One side of the family hit the Americas with MONEY during the flight of wild geese. They did give up their name for some reason though, hhmmm, I wonder why

He most certainly does. It perplexed me for the longest time that GW would have 4 good SM dexes ( BT, BA, SW and vanilla SM) and then 1 horrible one ( DA).

Malfred, The orks were written and released before 5th ed. was released.
But, I remember it being stated by GW or from someone working for them(Somewhere, I'll try to find where)that the Orks were written with 5th ed in mind.
I think 5th ed was given as the reason, after its release, for the Ork codex being delayed for an extra year as it went back into rewrite.
This is unsubstaintiated until I or someone else finds that statement. But, even without the statement there is a good case that the Orks were written for 5th. This is because of simultaneous development times. Wouldn't make sense to write them to be obsolete before the new models were finished being released.

Now go get the Tau codex. Look under the Battlesuit weapons, support, and wragear systems lists. Now read the entries for Cyclic Ion Blaster and then the Advance Stabilization system entry. If this doen't make your head Asplode then read further and try to figure out who can benefit from markerlights. Warning: If any of your brain cells have emo tendicies they will kill themselves.
