Last weekend I watched a turn of WoTR being played, and though it doesn't look especially enticing to me, I think I may have been inspired a little bit.

I'm working real hard lately to get my gaming speed up for tournaments. http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Playing_a_Horde_Quickly Since I play an Ork Horde army with over 100 boys running forward, I've become very efficient, but I'd still like more time. Do you think these new-fangled WoTR movement tray would look good on a 40K battle? Aesthetics are very important to me. What sort of problems do you see an army on these running to?

Well, I can see two problems. One is the regimented look of the units would be somewhat Un-orcy bar one or two obvious exceptions. Not a huge concern but you did mention you were concerned with aesthetics. Secondly I think the formations would be more compact than normal for 40k, looking at the size of the trays, and might make you a little more vulnerable to template weaponry.

To add another issue to the list, the wotr movement trays are not great when moving through cover (which theres a lot of in 40k)

I've had similar thoughts. I'll be purchasing a pack or 2 to test it out.

Full unit on trays vs. no trays for rest of army- faster? easier?
Multiple units partially in trays- faster? easier?

I'd test it out yourself to see if it works for you.

To fit a 2000 point Ork army on the table, I usually have to scrunch them all together. If I'm afraid of templates, I could stagger the Orks on the trays. If I wanted to move through cover, it's a simple matter of taking them off the trays as I move them forward, right? Same with assaults.

The other problem I see is if I get charged and my models are sitting on their trays.

That's not too big an issue, since troops can now respond to charges and move in.

I was looking at the exact same thing for my Boyz. I may try it out and see how they play out. It does become a bit painful moving so many Boyz around. Plus, just utelize a Big Mek w/ KFF so you can still get a cover save if in the open.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

I want to pick up the Apocalypse 10" template to use as a Termagant movement tray.

You'll get hosed by templates and probably spend a lot of time fiddling with the trays to move your guys through cover properly.

you can use them to deploy quickly esp if you are going first then move off of them.

Other companies make movement trays for 25mm GW based figures. I'd take a look at those if you're set on using movement trays.

Using trays as a way to set up sounds like a rather good idea though.

I'm starting to lean towards a Kult of Speed styled Ork army simply so all my Boyz will actually be set up in Trukks and Battlewagons. I'll worry about moving them after they disembark to assault

Best solution I've seen, by somoene with two 50-man Conscript units:

Rare earth magnets under each model, then stick the models to thin metal strips (he used the strips that you use to hold paper in a manilla folder).

You get strips of about 8-10 models, easy and quick to move around the table, good aesthetically as the metal strip can barely be seen, easier to move through cover than any tray.

You can also use them to very quickly set up compact, template-resistant formations which would be impossible to do in a timely manner otherwise but that's another story..
