Subject: Ideas For Cheap Valkyrie Conversions?
|
 |
Stealthy Grot Snipa

I love the new Valkyries and I’m thinking of creating an ‘Airborne Assault’ guard army. However the Valkyrie models are £35 each and that’s very expensive when considering an army featuring a lot of them.
So I’m currently trying to come up with conversions to represent them that is a bit more cheaper than buying 6 or 9 Valkyrie, and because I often go to GW tournaments I’d prefer conversions that were made up of mostly GW bits.
So far the only ideas I’ve had is converting a GW tank to look like either a V-22 Osprey or CH-47 Chinook. How I can do that I don’t know?

So any ideas?

Italeri makes a 1/48 V-22 kit, hope that helps; and yes, I'd definitely work with the V-22 over the Chinook as well.

the scale for the GW models is 1/35 so thry and find a model of around that size or a little bigger.

1/35 can sometimes work, but it's far too large a scale for 40K vehicle stand-ins imho, especially with aircraft.

1/48 for most aircraft will be fine.
1/35 and 1/32 will be way too large (get them in both as 1/35 is a 'ground' scale and 1/32 is used for aircraft.)
I've still got an old 1/48 AH-64 converted scale IG gunship model from 1990 (crew are about the same size as the sentinel crew figures.)

Because no two people would ever think of trying to find a way to model a powerful vehicle in a unique way while circumnavigating a hefty GW pricetag. Nah, must be thread thievery.
I'd hit up the V-22. If you're hellbent on GW bitz, try starting with a chimera chassis and throwing on a cockpit, tail and/or wings from a 1/48 Osprey. Tamiya makes a nice one.
It'll be ugly as sin, but that usually works for the guard. It'll probably be better looking than an Arvus Lighter.

I have the 1/48 Osprey model, it's a sweet kit and a tad bigger than a Valkyrie.
But really I don't see any way to make something that looks good, uses GW parts AND can pass for Valks that will be cheaper than buying them.
Especially if you figure in the cost of your labor.

There is no model for the FF Copperhead transport. There is a small die cast type job, but nothing the right scale, I eventually went for the T Salv HK flyer in this thread http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/251320.page
Good luck

Don't forget the good ol' Mi-24 too. http://www.revell.com/catalog/products/85-5856.html http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/rm/kit_rm_5819.shtml Considering its job in the real world was the same as the Valkyrie in our far distant and fictional future, it's a great choice if you like the look.

try a chinook, my friend uses a massive apoc army of chinook-borne catachans, it's freakin awwesome
*EDIT* he uses 37, yes 37 chinooks in his army, its terrifying.
he hosts all of our Apoc games cause he has 50,000 points of guard!
he insists on playing "ride of the valkyries" as he brings them on from reserve....

Hmmm the Valkyrie is a pretty sweet kit and at £35 a steal to be honest and one of GW's most smartest kits.

1/48 Mi-24 is the way to go for non GW. If you're set on GW I don't see many possibilities that will look decent and not wind up costing more than the valk. However, the sentinel may be a possibility. Use the body as the nose/cockpit, put wings and some kind of passanger compartment on the back, sell the legs as bitz (sentinel legs are one of the more valuable bitz - or buy the body sans legs).

On Hindsight a army of Osprey bourne troops would look pretty damn sweet to be honest.
But as for me I'll stick with the Valkyrie.
