Hmm ... car do get really really hot if parked in the sun during summer. Might warp some plastic? ( no idea )

Granted it is third hand stories, but I have heard of plastics melting in car trunks during the summer in places like texas and the southwest. I personally have left my models in the trunk in 90 F weather and they where fine. I would say unless it gets really hot, they should be fine, but parking the shade if you can manage it would not hurt.

Bad thing. First, heat could really mess them up. Second, vibration. The more you have them in a car, the more the models break, no matter how well packed in a case.

Somewhere in south-central England.

I've had a model get warped by sitting on top of a central heating radiator. The hot water couldn't be more than maybe 60 degrees C, so it shows that plastic starts to soften at well below its actual melting point.

if you have to ask yourself "is this a good idea for my models" and you cannot instantly come up with a positive answer, its prolly not a good idea for them.

while in a case they are protected from direct sunlight, the heat will cause plastic to warp overtime.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD MODELS BE LEFT IN THE TRUNK OF YOUR CAR.

No..

trunk might be marginally safer than the passenger compartment, as it's not a greenhouse, but if it heats up stuff will warp... if you -have- to leave it in, crack a window or something..

Well, I left my models in the black GW hard case in the trunk of my car a bunch of years ago, and the bases warped. So they didnt sit flat, the bases were saddle shaped, so they wobbled. Had to rebase an entire army.

Still sound like a good idea to you?

I'd say no. I had about a thousand dollars worth of art supplies in my car when it was stolen. Losing painted miniatures would be worse. Fortunately for me, the car thief had no idea my art supplies were valuable so I got them back when my car was found.

At least they were poorly painted.

Seriously, get them out of your trunk. or invest in a large ice chest.

I used to work at a secured building (defense contractor), and was not allowed to bring my models into work. I used to leave my army case in my car, under the front seat, and tried to park in the shade, with my windows slightly open. I ran into no problems with warping, however I dont know if you are worried about the safety of your car- I wasn't. Secured buildings also have secured parking lots, secured by guys with machine guns in fatigues. I still think they were a bit overly concerned with security.

Just carry it into buildings with you as you would a backpack. Unless for security reasons you may not possess one. I know if I'm going to have my models out and about during the day they sit beside me in the passenger seat or back behind my seat where they're in arm's reach. For any stop which may be longer than 20min I take the case inside with me and have it set beside me, or at my feet, in the breakroom or office at work, w/e.

No, not unless you have a way to keep the heat from them. want a surefire way? put them in a cooler, or plastic box with something to keep the tempature around them constant.

- warped bases, bent weapons, thin plastic warping, paint chipping.....

putting them in the protective container, you have a better chance of not having this happen.

I would think that the paint and glue would be more at risk than the plastic. In short: no.

I once left a box of termagants in the trunk of my car during the summer for a couple days. When I got them out and opened the box, they had warped to the point where they were unusable.

A single day of 100 degree heat will cause you to have to do some major reglueing. This is especially true for anything held together by white glue, such as on bases. It will take quite a bit more heat to melt your figures, but if your trunk is just sitting in exposed sunlight it works like an oven.

I think this depends on where you are. If you're somewhere where a '100 degree day' is one where it reaches 100 degrees for 20 minutes, then the above is likely true. However if you're somewhere (like Phoenix, AZ) where a '100 degree day' is one where it starts at 80 and hits 100 degrees by 10, then cools off below 100 degrees again after the sun goes down, then you DEFINITELY don't want your models in your car. (I get scared just driving them to the LGS sometimes).

I wouldn't do it long term, it gets up to 100+ in the summer, here. I've seen several models and plastic toys made of styrene get warped from the heat of a trunk or car interior. It can also mess up your paint, melting it to the bottom of boxes or storage foam or other miniatures. I'm trying to get melted rubber bands off some miniatures I bought used, but it depends on the weather in your area.

Not too hot here (Scotland). I cover the cases with a blanket and crack the sun roof. The cases don't even get warm to the touch.
