Thank you Skalk!
Here's the first test of a press moulded soul vortex:
The result seems to be far less detailed than the original sculpt, but I'm still going to try to paint it (just in case it would look better).
I've also added a little something to the door:

Hey guys!
It's been more than four months since I last updated this thread, I think I've beaten my own record!
Nothing new about the silver tower, however, I've found a material that will be very helpful on this project.
I've done a little work on the Thousand Sons:
And I've started a sorcerer to use as HQ (combined with Zahak, the Daemon Prince, it should work just fine)
It's just a regular CSM sorcerer, with the left arm of the Doomrider on which I've opened the hand.
I've also started to work on twelve more Noise marines (since with the new codex, I can't use blastmasters in squads of less than ten men).
For some of them I've ordered some Kromlech heads:
 .
Now something completely different.
Now that I have a basement in which I have installed a working space, I've started to work on something I wished to do for a while:
rebuilding the old cardboard Imperial Bastion.
A while ago, a good soul had provided to me the pdf scans of the elements, and I really wanted to give it a try, but it would have implied far too much plasticard.
Recently I've discovered a variant of styrene sheet used to make commercial signs. It's cheap, easy to cut and perfect to build the main structures of such a building.
Here are the first pics of the bastion:
(note on this last pic, the platform is perpendicular to th rest of the building, it's a problem with the angle of the pic)
This original building implied the use of bulkheads, but since I ran low on these (and keeping the last ones I have for when I'll really need them) I'm building an alternative:
Any advice or opinion?
Since I'll soon have holidays, you can expect more to come soon!

Thank you for the replies guys
This styrene sheets are a wonder to work with, so easier to cut than the classic plasticard, ans cheaper too! It would be perfect to build eldar terrain!
I'll use some on the silver tower after the bastion will be finished.
Here are the latest progress on the bastion:
I've added walls on the rear:
The first layer of the "proto-bulkehead" has been glued:
The rear platform/walkway will be made of textured plasticard reinforced with styrene:
like this:
and placed here:
I think I'll add some pilars under the platform. Any suggestion?

What thickness are those sheets. Might have to try them out after I work through my plastic arid pile?
It's 3mm thick sheet. As Blachand said, it's worth gold (not in price ) but working with it is wonderful!
Here are my latest progress on the bastion:
I've finished the second part of the main walkway
I've also built the other walkways:
and started to hide the gaps in the main walls at the rear of the bastion, using plasticard to make some extra armor:
Now, I'll have to work seriously on the replacement of the external bulkheads. I'll try to get some inspiration from the original bulkheads (and might give a try at the plans Dave posted on my Gorkamorka thead.
If anyone has any idea, please, tell me.

I will try to work on some handrails for the walkways of the bastion tomorrow.

@GiraffeX: Yes I think that broken stain glass would be the kind of details that make the difference
@Vik: welcome on board (again )
@Dave: Yes! that's it, PVC foam sheet! I wasn't sure of the name of the material, but that's it. As I already mentioned it, it's wonderfull to work with, it's so easy to cut.
@Skalk: nice temple indeed! I like his stain glass work. While I think intact windows are not to be seen on a ruin, I'll take a closer look at his technique to see what I can do.
No pics today, since the only thing I've done is another shrine and that it's the exact replica of the first one.
This second shrine will be my temple of Nurgle. I already have some braseros an a couple of nurgle icons from the warshrine. I could probably use half a load of the vampire counts corpse cart too.
What do you think?
For the SoB Shrine, I'll use instant mold to make a GS statue for the saint's tomb, and I still have some Icons and even a Fleur de Lys panel from the immolator.

I have thought about the stain glass question, and I will go for partially intact glass in the upper parts and the corners of the windows, and a special one for the nurgle shrine.
I've carved a stonewall patern on the walls of the shrine:
Doing this is quite easy, the PVC foam is soft enough to keep the motives I've applied with a nail-like tool.
However, I managed to do a complete mess on the second attempt on the first piece of wall:
I'll have to draw more irregular lines to hide the I've done in the upper part, and I'll have to do the same irregular job on the whole second shrine.
About the bastion, I thought I could use the pieces of PVC foam I've made by cutting out the windows of the shrines on the proto-bulkheads, like this:
With rivets, plasticard stripes, and some GS and bits, I might end up with something not too bad, what do you guys think?

Well, I think I could ultimately blow the miscarved part, but the vines equivalent or battle damages could do the trick.
@OneManNoodles: what do you mean by covering the joints and windows?
@theophony: I'll use the nurgle icons from the warshrine as ornaments on the nurgle shrine, I have a special stain glass idea for the round window. Marines heads, blood pools and rotten pieces of corpes would be nice details.
I've finished to carve the walls of the first shrine, I've also finished the ground and the platforms.
What do you think?
On the third pic you see the empty space of the tomb in which I'll put the statue of the saint.
The statue will be made of GS, using a instant mold of this model:
I'll try to make some similar progress on the shrine of Nurgle this evening, and to have some work done ont the bastion. I'm on holiday until friday, so I think I would have no excuse for not finishing at least one of these projects.

Patience? I wouldn't say that, but since you're living on a distant continent, it justifies the fact that you didn't hear me swear (I'm pretty sure Vik has heard something )
I'm glad you like the textures, it was a completely new way of working for me, and I feared to screw it.
Here are the latest progress on the SoB shrine.
The statue (with one missing leg - the GS is still curing)
Now in place:
All the platforms are in place:
The outside steps are in place too:
Now I have to do add some columns to the arks before working on the base. Then it will be time for some paint.

I'll try to reproduce the original colours of the shrine, a greenish grey for the outside, and a warmer colour for the inside (is it what you suggest by 'tan'?) and a classic marble on the floor.
dsteingass wrote:You can also make a really nice pitted effect to the stone by just hammering an awl or other pointy or blunt metal object against it. I did that with this Fallout dio
This was before the final paintjob, the pitting takes shade really well.
Awesome , I will try this on a test piece of pvc to see how it works and if I manage to do something correct, I'll try this on the stonewalls.
This afternoon I took a break from the shrine to have something done on the bastion.
I've added a handrail on the main rear walkway:
I'll try to finish the main tower of the bastion to see where else I could do the same thing.

@Dave: The butresses took quite some time and blades (the first side layers were made out of a too thick plasticard). I'd really like to be able to cast such things and make some resin copies, but I'm affraid it's far above my actual skills (plus the resin and silicon I'd need are not so easy to find around here...). Since you've posted the necromunda bulkhead plans on my ork terrain thread, I kept in mind that one day I should try to build my own bulkheads and to cast them, but the problem would be casting it.
@Theophony: If only you had some bastion plans to use them on
@Inmygravenimage: I'll use as many elements from this etched brass kit as I can. There are so many possibilities with it!
@Yggs: Well, I have more time and room to practice, which is helpful if you want to practice I hope you'll like the final result.
Here's just a test assembling of the left side of the bastion:

@Skalk: Thanks man! I would really like to see your take on the arches.
@Yggs: Yep, I've moved into a house in January, after nearly three months at my parents place. I now have a gaming room in the basement, and a permanent painting and modelling desk (plus enough space for all the terrain I was dreaming of).
Here is the latest progress on the bastion.
I've made another bulkhead replacement (the HJ Pattern Bulkhead Mk3 )
There is still much more work to do, but now that I've solved the bulkheads problem, I feel it's far easier to work on the bastion.

@Dave: Galorn is an option and I'll probably try to contact him, but soon or later, I'll have to find a way to cast my own stuff myself (especially considering cost of shipping to and from the USA which recently increased)
About the Aquilla, keep in mind that the bulkheads I've done until now are just prototypes made for the bastion, and while I could sculpt an icon of my own as Vik suggested it, when I'll build some more definitive versions, for casting purpose, I think I'll avoid any determined symbol, leaving blank spaces to allow people to use the symbol of their choice (aquillas, chaos stars, or a symbol I'll make).
To build more precise bulkheads I need to find sone new cutting tools, to make straight and precise cuts. Any recommandations?

I use such a steel ruler, but it's not as wide as those you've shown and my main problem is that it's constantly slipping... I had never thought of adding some anti-slipping material beneath...
I'm curious to see you're device Vik.
This was a crappy week-end, both my daughter and my wife were sick and I had no more than an hour for me.
However, I managed to start a new and more precise bulkhead using the same base as on the bastion side entries:
(which looked like that)
The new one has been more precisely cut and I've started to work on the stripes and layers of plasticard which will give it its texture.
I've no pic of this new bulkhead yet but you can expect one during the next days.

Guys, I had a long and productive modeling evening!
First, the 'to-be-casted' bulkhead has evolved since you've seen it the last time.
I've added smaller stripes of plasticard on it, but I wasn't happy with the door (not straight enouh)
So I've removed the door and replaced it with thicker plasticard before adding rivets and some thin stripes to build a small metallic structure at the top of the bulkhead.
Now it's looking like that:
After that, I've decided to try somehting similar on the two side doors of the bastion:
But after that it was nearly midnight so I've left the rest of the riveting job for later (tonight if possible).
You'll notice on this last pic that the wall on the left is not straight. It will be covered with a L shaped piece of plasticard.
Now it's time for my sunday breakfast: Bacon, eggs, molten cheddar and coffee, me voila!

Guys, after a busy and terrible week, I've finally managed to assemble the tower!
Of course there are still many things to fix (the walkways are too long and I have to hide it), plus many things to add to the main structure to make it less...empty. But I feel satisfied to see a project advancing at a (nearly) regular pace!
Here are the latest pics:
I have to build some ladders between the 1st and 2nd floor on each side, and more details almost everywhere on the main structure.
I also have to build at least three more bulkhead like doors (the front and rear entrances + the 2nd floor entrance), and I'm serioulsy thinking of giving a try at casting with the material I have gathered (I have some silicone for the mold, but I only have some cristal resin to pour into.).
Once all this will be done, I'll give it a base and airbrush it.

Sorry for the late reply, I was driven away from modelling by other hobbies: RPG and LARP. I have to build a scarab mask and a cybernetic arm for a Dark Earth LARP in september, and it takes time.

Hey guys!
It's been a busy month for me, with two 40K games (which I've lost) and many new things including some improvements for my CSM army for the next games.
Let's start with a transport for my TS termies:
I've also worked on my obliterators. These are second hand models which came whithout the weapons on the arms, so I have to add some myself (still a lot to do on this point). As the obliterators head are probably one of the worst mistake GW made, I've used some GS replicas of the hellbrute head which is far better (I posted a test conversion of the head last year).
Here's what they're looking like:
I've also worked on my Dark Vengeance models:
and a shameless theft of KrautScientist's awesome traitor commissar ( http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/412445-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Cultists%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Lord%20Commissar%2C%20Renegades%2C%20Starter%20Box.html)
And finally, I've started a new Nurgle terminator:

Most of the blue is done now.

just kidding seriously though maybe move the spikes up a little have them all on one pinned rack that can flatten out when the door is open
Good Idea, but I went for graven's solution earlier.
Here's what the Land raider looks like now:
Sadly the pics are not showing what the airbrushing job really looks like. The next step is the gold and perhaps some OSL (and the gunner of course).
On a different subject, I'm preparing the board for the next game Vim_the_good and I are going to play in October (sorry if the pics are blurry):
I'll add some more ruins in the middle of the board, and at least one passageway between the manufactorum and the basilica. Any suggestions on the central ruins?
I'm also working on some Blood bowl models for a small league I might set up in the next months (if I can motivate enough players around here).
A la prochaine!
