Spoiler:
The joke being that this is the stereotypical anime fan.
That person in the photo bears a striking resemblance to a friend of mine. So it was a case of MFW when i saw that picture because i thought it was my friend at a cursoury glance. She always gets pegged as an anime fan because she has bright pink hair and usualy has fluro green or yellow tights on.
I found it when I googled anime fan for a MFW image.

Currently keeping up with the new episodes of Bleach and Blood-C. Catch occasional episodes of Gad Guard on Hulu, though I've not watched any in a bit, and am rewatching Soul Eater, almost thru that show again.
Oh, and the story differences in Full Metal and Brotherhood is that the first was made when the manga was still being put out, and had some filler episodes, then when they caught up with the manga instead of doing filler arcs like other shows do they just kept making episodes and wrote their own ending. Brotherhood was made when the manga was finished or nearly so, and cuts out all the filler and alternate stuff. It has a Much more epic ending than the first one and I while I like the first one I would recommend Brotherhood as the stronger series.
Where's the serious, plot driven anime with well rounded characters? I keep hoping to find another Ghost in the Shell, but everything is either over the top comical or cute, lacks a decent story/writing, has shallow obnoxious characters (typically under 18), and excessive fan service.
Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran was the last really good anime I've seen.

You really aren't going to find anything quite like Ghost in the Shell. You are having the same problem I have with anime at the moment. If you haven't already seen them I'd recommend some of the older Gundam shows or Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Galactic Heroes is more character driven though.
Watching Tiger and Bunny, can't wait for the last episode.
I also just re watched the original Patlabor OVA the other night. It still surprises me how different episodes 5 and 6 are from the rest, but they really do set the tone for the movies.

Appleseed is fairly good, also by Shirow. However, it varies a lot (original OVA from the 90's, modern movies, modern OVA all have the same characters, and are not quite reboots, but...)
Witchhunter Robin might be up your alley. Bubblegum Crisis 2040 has quite bit of fanservicyness, so maybe not, though all the characters are horribly flawed in their own ways. Read or Die (TV series) starts off somewhat silly, but slowly works it's way into serious (or possibly nightmareish, if you stop and think about some of the things that these people have had done to them, it's one of the few times I've seen angst justified.) as things go along, however, does contain fanservice and two child characters (one who's occasionally more mature than the adults...). Pandora Hearts has it's silly moments early on, and involves kids and a monster of the week format (at least in the anime, which only covers the early, sillier, parts of the manga), but the over arching plot, particularly if they continue it following the manga, is actually quite dark. As in VERY dark. The humor bleeds out (along with several characters) as things go along and it gets more and more grimdark. I have the feeling this one is heading toward 'Everyone Dies' as an ending...
It's hard to find serious, plot driven, and low to no fanservice, since even Ghost in the Shell does not qualify there...

Oh, and watch the Read Or Die movie before you watch the tv series, even if they don't appear related. Some of the stuff that happens later will make more sense that way.
Just got the last episode of Cowboy Bepop to watch. Am kind of sad it has come to a final episode Has been a very good series and likewise wondering why I haven't seen it sooner

Macross Frontier. I'm a sucker for piloted mecha ever since I saw Lensman back in 6th grade. Then got back into it when Macross Pluss was released back in the mid 90's here.

That's gainax for you, every anime they make does that.
'Nadia' was pretty strightforward, as were 'This Ugly & Beautiful World' and 'Mahoromatic'.. though those last two should have had their endings switched.

Nah not all of their animes are confusing. Gunbuster and Gurren Lagann were pretty straightforward. Panty and Stocking wasn't confusing either, but rather quite hilarious. I've noticed that they put out a lot of anime that is very distinct and almost every show they've made (almost) has been considered a great anime by many anime fans.

Macross Frontier is amazing and if you get a chance watch the movies. I've only seen the 1st Macross Frontier movie, but it was awesome. It changes the story, while still being great. Its a shame Macross Zero didn't follow in the footsteps of Macross Plus.
Pokemon: The First Movie. Does it even count? Other than watching that in theaters ~12 years ago or so, I have never watched an anime. Srsly. I didn't even watch the Pokemon show or the following movies. I have recently thought about watching some animes though, seeing how Netflix has quite a few that you can watch instantly. Was thinking of trying out full metal alchemist. Any recommendations for an anime noobie? I should also mention that my favorite cartoon OF ALL TIME is Avatar: The Last Airbender.

I definitely recommend looking into Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (not the original Fullmetal Alchemist, as it sucked compared to this one). Death Note is good if you're into psychological thrillers, and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is that, with mechs. I strongly recommend looking into both Cowboy Bebop and Trigun - the former is an absolute classic of anime, and the latter is a fantastic cowboy/gunslinger anime. And a really good high school romantic comedy (the genre is actually really popular in animedom) I'd look into Ouran High School Host Club, as well as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (which has a really neat sci-fi/fantasy plot running through the series).
