I tried to watch both Excel and Mermaid Bride but both were over the top screaming and trying too hard to be weird for my tastes.
Then I tried Chobits and that was too creepy for me. A guy with a preteen looking female robot? Plus the melodrama was too much.
Then to my chagrin I watched Sekirei and liked it quite a bit. Even though it's a fan service anime with lots of bare skin. I figure it'll be the same thing over and over again, so 3 episodes might be all I like.

Other than watching that in theaters ~12 years ago or so, I have never watched an anime. Srsly. I didn't even watch the Pokemon show or the following movies.
I have recently thought about watching some animes though, seeing how Netflix has quite a few that you can watch instantly. Was thinking of trying out full metal alchemist. Any recommendations for an anime noobie?
I should also mention that my favorite cartoon OF ALL TIME is Avatar: The Last Airbender.

A lot of people love Full Metal Alchemist. I'm pretty sure its one of the ones you can stream on Netflix.

Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood is my favorite anime of all time, I recommend it to you, as well as Bleach, (it's still going) and death note

Agreed on all accounts.
I am currently re-watching FMA: Brotherhood for about the seventh time, and it's still the best thing ever.
Mustang burning the crap out of Envy was a moment of brilliance unparalleled by other anime...

Soul Eater was a bit of fun as well.

Way to go! Really great series, gotta love Tsubaki...
Have you seen Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka? A bit perverted, but very funny, and I think it would appeal to you greatly based on your previous taste. The OVA in particular was a complete riot!

That was hilarious
Watched Zombie Desu Ka about the same time as Dream maker Berry (?) Which I thought was good.

There is also a very good anime similar to that about witches that have to be destroyed with some very interesting twists

One of these days am going to learn that my memory consists of sloppy pig slurry and I will write down the bloody titles!!

Not Strike Witches...

Let me know if you remember, sounds decent!

Also; the Church in Trinity Blood reminds me strongly of Sisters of Battle.

Finally, currently enjoying Ao no Exorcist.

I agree, Zombie was good. Probably one of the better ways of using plot armour and kind of getting away with it.

Have you changed your avatar especially for your post about Zombie Desu Ka, Not U?

What do you mean by plot armour please? not heard the expression before.

Ah forgot to say Ao No Exorcist is quite enjoyable.
I tend to like to watch series without having to wait for weekly updates so just letting the episodes build back up again.

Can't remember if anyone has mentioned Deadman Wonderland
Apologies if it has been

Yep, been meaning to for a little bit.

Plot armour is when the protagonist is favored by the story line, as in no matter what he cannot fail or die. Even if they screw up they will end up succeeding in the end. Obviously necessary for a story to progress, but it's generally when it is excessive and entirely defies logic.

Basically look at all the Gundam series for examples. Though most are still good.

So I watched the first couple of episodes of Mahou SHoujo Madoka Magica...

So at first I was like, awww, what a cute/fun/silly series! Sure to be comedic and lighthearted!

Then *SPOILER* Mami died.

OMGWTF

Why did that have to happen, and so randomly, with no prolonged shounen-speeches or anything. Just gets her head bitten off...

Almost as bad as the fate of Hughes, but at least mustang gets a proper vengeance for that...

Yeah, definitely keep watching. Mami had a pretty starkly brutal end, but it just gets more and more messed up from there. I quite enjoyed the series as a whole.

I finished it...

I'm really impressed; definitely didn't continue with the impression the first 5 mins of the series gives...

For me, the best thing about the series was the style in which it was drawn; whilst the character's heads felt a little 'off', the "Witches Realm" was always amazing. Very solid series, even if it's only 13 episodes, definitely worth a watch.

Is Magica on Hulu or where did you catch it? Just finished rewatching Soul Eater and could use a new series to jump into and this one sounds interesting. I always like seeing different and cool artistic styles.

I honestly simply have not watched enough anime(or, really, any at all) recently, so the last shows I actually watched a fair amount of:

1) Code Geass
Really loved it, even if it does get a bit of a "super-hero" attitude about it, the characters are real and gritty, especially Lelouch, and act like real people in gakky situations. Love it.
2) Neon Genesis Evangelion
It's a bit repetitive, as in most of the episodes are structured the same way, but once you get past that, the storyline is great. Rei Ayanami is the coolest character, just saying.
3) Bleach(I think?)
This show is really hyped up, I watched 10-15 episodes(I forget, it was a while ago). To be honest, I was pretty bored.

I tried Ghost in the Shell, and just couldn't really get into it, though I only watched the first episode. I also tried Eden of the East... Does that get better later? Because the first episode was good-ish, but the animation style was pretty meh, and the characters seemed pretty predictable.

Witch Hunter Robin, episode 8, "Faith"
Touto Taka No Dai General Hospital

That is my sort of Hozzy, I want to be treated there!

What is it about Robin that she always bumps into the antagonist at the start of the episode?
How does she do that?
