I think it was Sweden which introduced a number of incentives to try and encourage professional couples (or individuals) to have children (or more children).

Well, generally, the most important thing is flexible maternity and paternity conditions. The UK seems pretty okay in that regard.

I agree that it's a massive problem, but almost every solution to it I can think of involves far too much intrusion of the government into individual's lives, or the creation of horrific conditions and tragedies for the innocent children in question (if their parents are cut off from benefit).

This is true. if only people would be more responsible and stop having children they can't afford, and start raising their children to have good values. What a better place the world would be.

Hah!

UK paternity leave is a joke.

Most new fathers work harder and put in longer hours after the birth of a child. It's keyed by the responsibility for the household budget, because their wives have stopped working (if they ever did).

No-one takes anything like the paternity leave theoretically available to them.

Things aren't much better on the maternity side, unless you work for a big company like Sony or Virgin Atlantic.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
