Hehe . Flaming arrows are actually not so useful. The time that you see people with strong Regen is rather far and few in between.

The peasants are simply there for size, If I ever wanted to play a historical game with GW Heroic sized models I'd have enough or a large Storm of Magic game. In the two games of WFB I've played, they've not proven their worth. I'm hoping that new Bretonnian book drops and they get a better WS or BS, something to make it worthwhile. As it stands I might just drop them and field a unit of Knight Errants.

I've hit a snag in my painting, I'm taking a break to build some stuff
Specifically this: http://www.worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?view=product&product=24

The ship is going to be big, close to 2' to 3' if not longer.

Description
SeaWorks: Maiden of the High Seas

Multi-deck System:

The sterncastle, forecastle and main hull are all independent sections. Each has a roof that is easily removed to access interior elements with ease. Combat and general movement can take place on all decks simultaneously without the need to re-order other sections. The lower decks even accommodates a number of ornately detailed free floating walls, allowing you to create practically any interior hull layout.
Masts and Sails:

With the Maiden's unique mast and yard design users can configure their ships sails in any number of ways in "real time". Simply drop on the sail of your choice to change the look and feel of the ship. Even show "raised sail states" with a number of raised sail designs. A great way to give players a sense of what state the sails are in during a bad stretch of weather

These are shots of what it should look like once finished:

And, here's some shots of the progress:

Thats a 12" steel ruler for perspective & 3 sheets of 8.5"x11" cardstock

Thats a 12" steel ruler for perspective & 3 sheets of 8.5"x11" cardstock. Each piece has to be cut out precisely to the instructions.

You can see a ruler and a Dr. Pepper 20 oz bottle for reference, this is when I'm about to apply it to the foam board for strengthening.

I had messed up and cut the foam board into two sections, when these two pieces were meant to be glued down to a single piece of foam board. I've stuck toothpicks into the center of each, pushed them together with glue for support.

Each section of this model comes within its own folder and printable sections, there are precise instructions for each section and on each print out it it has a label, and it gives you a quick guide with pictures of where to cut, where to fold and where to score the design to be able to fold it better. These are some really quality designed card stock terrain pieces.

I'm using foam board to help strengthen the model in several key places, both per the instructions and in a couple of places where I think it will help. I'm using a couple of different glues and some tape on the underside of the pieces as well.

I had sent this out to Kinkos to get it printed out and it wasn't until I had agreed to and started the job that they told me the price was going to be $1.50 per sheet since it is a card stock color print job. There's more than 60 sheets to this model. O.o So its a significant investment.

In retrospect, some of the pieces like the decking could have been printed on regular paper. I'm gluing the decking to foamboard, so it doesn't need the resiliency of card stock. The side hulls do need to be card stock as do several other pieces, but a lot of pieces could be done on regular paper and then glued to the foam board.

I recommend studying the designs and making a judgement call on what needs to be printed out on what stock of paper. Also, shop around and get prices before you go to a printer.

Haha. I might just do that. I've got a lot of options and I've learned a few things from the Card Stock terrain build on this ship. Speaking of which, I need to update this blog.

Antman677 wrote:geez hugh...those brets looks awesome! were you a factory owner in the industrial revolution in your past life or something? you churn out difficult to paint minis like nothing! really cool (:

Anthony, Congrats again on your paint wins at Lock & Load, always great to see your work.

I'm not sure of my past lives, but I can crank out batch paint jobs like they're nothing. I tend to cheat a lot with colored primers, painters tape and some paint pens of a variety of colors. I also have created several washes from pickle jars (cleaned) then filled with a color like Chaos Black or a Scorched Brown, then the jar is filled with distilled water, shaken and bam instant wash for models in a container large enough for me to dip them or for me to use a large brush to cover the entire model.

You may have seen me paint my Warmachine Cygnar models while sitting at Aero Hobbies in Santa Monica, 20+ Long gunners and 20+ Trenchers in about 5 days of work, so about 50 models. all assembly line painted.

But yes, I can churn out a 2k army for 40K or something similar in about a month.

You and Leohart above take your time and do great work, your models really pop. My stuff is merely table top ready, lol.

I have done commission work, the Red Orks are one example of my work and are in play locally. I finished a 2000pt Ork Force in less than 30 days, the guy took a month extra to pay me, right down to my deadline and that left a sour taste in my wallet to twist a phrase.

I've done work for http://www.PaintingManiacs.com as well as some terrain building and painting for local gamers and hobby shops.

Still if I wasn't busy with my own work I would definitely consider another commission. I just need to finish a lot of my stuff too.

leohart wrote:Hugh, ya got good stuff, just keep on painting bro.

Thanks Dude, I will keep painting! Just let me finish this Pirate ship, lol.

Anchor pieces, meant to be folded over and glued together and then cut out along the outline.

The front hull pieces. These are meant to be cut out and folded along the center line. I used a scoring tool and a steel ruler to help create the fold lines throughout the model. Elmers spray craft glue was used to get an even coating across the two halves of the folded piece of card stock. I cut vertical pieces of plasticard and glued them to one side of the model for extra durability.

Cutting out the front hull pieces and then folding/gluing them together using a spray adhesive.

This is the front hull sides glued together before attaching them to the base of the model.

You start at the outside triangles and alternate gluing them down to the base of the model. I used super glue for this portion. I felt it would add to the strength of the bond.

This is a piece designed to be cut out and used to cover the inside base of the hulls glued connections, all those individual triangles. This still needed some more cutting out of the excess white space.

You can see some of the tools I used, paperclips, elmers spray craft glue, scoring tool, xacto knife and the black sharpie was used for edging the white portions of the model, i.e. the cut edges, the fold lines. Basically anywhere that showed white.

Keeping everything organized was a must. While a lot of the pages are labeled, some are not. Once cut from the page, the label becomes separate from the piece. I used the paperclips not just to help hold the pieces together when they were drying, but also to hold the label pieces to the cut piece.

You're going to get a lot of waste i.e. paper, foamboard cuttings, cut plasticard etc. Keep it to the side you might need it to reinforce a piece later or for a different smaller piece of something.

Steel Ruler/Straight edge and scoring tool. The scoring tool just needs to be a blunt rounded piece you can run along the paper to crease it without cutting the paper.

This is an interior wall that is designed to be used as a support for the structure. I figured adding a piece of plasticard in between the card stock would help reinforce and support the model above.

These are hull side pieces and are meant to be cut out, scored along the middle for a fold line and then glued to the base pieces separately.

I thought that wasn't the best idea. I cut out one long sheet of plasticard, glued all the hull pieces together, folded them over the plasticard, cut the plasticard to fit the hull shape and then glued it all together for a sturdy stable piece.

two walls completed, time to glue them to the model! Oh and caffeine, another crucial tool for the build.

Plasticard supported walls and caffeine, progress as of 31 May, 2012. Tools of the trade, steel straight edge, black permanent markers for edging, Xacto knife and scoring tool and a varieties of glue and tape.

Plasticard supported walls and caffeine, progress as of 31 May, 2012 a buddy allowed me to utilize his laptop so we could refer to the directions for each section of the ship building process. His assistance and help is helping to speed this process along. You can see the tape and clear elmers as well as the spray adhesive elmers glue I'm using on this project.

Plasticard supported walls both hulls are attached, progress as of 31 May, 2012 laying every thing out to get a visual of things to come.

Rear hull pieces which will be reinforced with plasticard cut to fit.

This is plastruct strips, you can purchase plasticard in a variety of shapes and sizes. These can be acquired at a wide variety of hobby shops in various sizes and shapes, though your best bet would be to find a train hobby/modeling store for larger sized pieces.

A shot of the ship with the rear hull piece attached with both regular and superglue. The plasticard pieces don't affect the size of the model since they're thin, yet sturdy.

These are internal wall brace pieces. Again, I cut plasticard and shaped it to the piece to help support the weight of the model above it. The sheet only has six supports and I'm debating whether I should go get another sheet printed for additional supports.

I made a template plasticard insert wall piece and then used a sharpie to draw the pieces to shape from the left over plastruct strip. These still required shaping with a hobby knife after they had been glued into the card stock model internal wall brace piece.

A shot of the internal wall brace piece glued into the side and bottom of the model. I'm using the seamed board pieces as guidelines for lining up the wall braces.

A shot of all six of the internal wall brace pieces glued and then taped into the side and bottom of the model. I'm using the seamed board pieces as guidelines for lining up the wall braces.

A larger shot of the model as it currently sits the morning 1 June, 2012.

A larger shot of the model as it currently sits the morning 1 June, 2012. This shows the floor pieces sitting inside on the support pieces. You can see how well the center long floor sits on the supports.

The internal mast support pieces, I cut plasticard to fit inside the sides of each of these for additional support. The mast is designed to slide down the hexagonal holes through the entire ship. these are the base pieces.

Each of the internal mast supports must be glued down to the base of the ships lower hull in the correct manner, due to the hard edges of the hexagonal holes through the foamboard above, there isn't much room for error.

Also pictured is the plasticard supported wall piece for the forecastle base.

These were cut, folded, glued, then the white part was mostly cut out or to shape as needed. These pieces seemed to be more aesthetic in the design and go on the sides of the forecastle.

Progress on the ship, checking the sturdiness of the design and working my way towards the main and upper decks.

You can see the two 12" rulers for length measurement, at this point the ship is about 2' 6" and will get a little longer once the bowsprit is attached.

Thanks! I try to take as many pictures as I can to document my progress and ideas, especially if I try something different than what the normal plans are. Each section of this design has close to 20 pages of instructions. They could use some work/help on their instructions/how to's as a lot of it is simply a picture w/ "cut here or fold here, figure it out yourself" style of instructions.

I've been wanting to build this model for a long time, ever since I saw one in a Pathfinder Society scenario: Murder on the Throaty Mermaid. I didn't realize how big the ship was, how much work and how expensive the printing would be.

Printing full color on cardstock at a fedex kinkos was over $100. Though at one kinkos it was $1.25/page & the other was $1.50/page. Minimum amount of pages you're going to print out is 80, some will be transparency, most will be card stock. Some could be printed on regular paper (like the decking since its glued to the foam board ), but that would be a personal choice. I'm happy with all the card stock.

The ship is actually further along and seen some game time usage, I just need to upload the pics and write out what I did. There are more pics in the gallery section for the ship.

Recently I bought an army off a guy on ebay, here is the link:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/170844191757?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I paid about 134.00 for it and this is what it looked like on the ebay auction:

This is what it looked like when I received and opened the box:

Everything was packaged loose, without padding or paper in a box too large for the army. Those heavy metal models in the first picture as well as the remaining models all had a lovely time slamming around inside the box all the way from NY to TX through our awesome mail system.

Everything was pretty much trashed, broken and damaged. I contacted the seller who was less than enthused and refusing to refund my payment as well as arriving at a variety of conclusions as to my mental state among other things. Opened a case and escalated the issue, ebay seems to have understood my case and I'm awaiting my refund.

Its been a bit of a hassle and I'll hopefully be getting the money back that I spent, but the time and effort dealing with this has been annoying to say the least.

I bought a DE Starter box army and a heavy raider and then I bought this 2K army off ebay, but it arrived all shattered & in pieces. Which I've now sent back. So, now I don't know if I want to keep the DE stuff I bought or go to GW and trade it for something else as it is still in the shrink wrap.

I might trade it in for some Empire stuff. DE Battle force = $110 & Raider = $35.00, so a trade in value of $145

I've got the 100+ Men at Arms & 100 + Bowmen from the Bretonnian line + the Empire Battleforce box
(( This set contains 20 Empire State Troops (which include the option for a command group); 10 State Handgunners (which can alternatively be built as 10 Crossbowmen and includes the option for a command group); a Great Cannon and three crew members (which can alternatively be built as a Mortar); and 8 Empire Knights (which include the option for a command group). )),

1 more cannon and 1 box of militia, I could proxy Bret Knights as Empire Knights, I think I also have an Empire Captain model and a master engineer.

So getting pieces to fill out a full empire force might not be so bad. Just not sure what to get. Though I could also get the WFB Army book and Pre-order the 6th Edition book. sigh. So many books.

Note: I originally picked up the Empire models because I wanted to make pirates for my ship posted above. Which I am going to upload photos for next.

Briancj wrote:I really, REALLY hate it when eBay goes bad. Sometimes, shipping happens. I sent a Tzeentch DP off to Hawaii, and it got MANGLED, in spite of me packing it in bubblewrap and packing peanuts.

But this...yeah. Hopefully, eBay will come down on your side.

I think you should take this as a sign. Dark Eldar is not your next path.

Agreed. I hated it when I was burned previously with some ebay purchases ( see earlier part of this blog for those chimera's ). I know things will shift around in packaging and accidents happen, but this guy didn't even wrap anything, he just dumped it into the box and dropped it off at the post.

I wasn't really interested in Dark Eldar, I just bought the boxes because of the price hike coming and I had some old DE Warrior models, so I figured I could expand on that easily and either play them or sell them.

Now, I have the DE Battleforce and a Raider in shrinkwrap, but I don't really want them. So I'm going to take them into GW Tomball and trade them in for something.

leohart wrote:I agree. The path of pain is not your path. How about trading in the DE stuff for 2 more Bretonnian Trebuchet. I love your Bretonnian stuff so far. Would really love to see you finish them up for Warhammer.

Plus, right now is a very bad time to buy anything 40K, stuff that you buy now might be obsolete the second 6th edition hit. e.g. Rhino-chassis spam might not be advantageous anymore.

Dude, lol I have two Bretonnian Trebuchets, I don't need any more. I have a ton of the models finished almost enough to field a fully painted 4K point force. More than 1200 points in just basic peasant models alone.

The Pirate ship needs completing, so I will focus on finishing that, though someone at Fat Ogre asked for my help completing some of their Space Marine models for WargamesCON in Austin, Texas this weekend. I was going to go, but I can't get anyone to help out here.

I was thinking some Empire models to help finish out this Empire force I listed in my previous post, possibly a general, wizard, some warmachines and the steam tank, but not sure of an army list so I haven't made a decision yet.

I also thought I'd just slap it onto a gift card and get the Rule Books in print, since I have the WFB book in .pdf only, though if I pick up a tablet pc like I've been talking about, but haven't made a decision on which one, then that would solve my book issues.

So then I'm back to models and what to buy, lol. :p Based on an Empire Battle Force + 1 Cannon and a unit of militia with an Empire Captain and a Master Engineer, what would you build?

I had these guys sitting in with my Mordian Iron Guard, he's the old Steam Tank Commander and the old Master Engineer with multi-pistol, They could be re-purposed into the Empire Army with a simple removal from the round and installing on a square base as they're simply primed white at this time.

And for those interested here is the convo from ebay supporting my claim,
"eBay Customer Support will issue a full refund to you when you ship the item back to the seller with tracking to the address below."

Hooray me! So I'll have the 134 back as well as the trade in value 145 estimated to work with when building this force or to pickup something new, which I was undecided between more models for WFB or Warmachine Mercenaries (i.e. Pirates for my Pirate ship) or another game I recently came across Freebooters Fate, its a Pirate Skirmish game similar to Infinity or Malifaux.

I still need to finish painting all these models though, lol.

As far as my colored primers that arrived, I've got Alien Purple, Wolf Grey, Leather Brown, Pure Red and Ultramarine blue, my P3 Black & White and a shitton of models to prime and paint, lol.
http://usshop.thearmypainter.com/products.php?ProductGroupId=2

I'm planning to use the Ultramarine Blue on my Mordian Iron Guard models to get them closer to done faster. Hopefully this blue will match well with the models I've already painted.

The Alien Purple is slated for the 5th Edition Lizardmen, they'll be primarily purple with some accent colors like hawk turquoise for the scales and then white for the edging.

The Leather Brown is slated for the remaining Bretonnian Peasant Men at Arms, the Empire Militia and especially the Skaven.

The Wolf Grey was used previously on my SW and I didn't like the color on them, I prefer a more adeptus grey for my wolves. So, I'll have that available for some other project. I still have some Cygnar to paint and that might work for the gun mages.

The Pure Red I've put to use on a lot of different models, like the Red Orks, I like it and have thought of making some of the Lizardmen bright red or using it on the Empire troops. I know I'm going to use it to Prime my Warmachine Khador models and I might pick up some Blood Angels then hit them with the Red to get them done and on the table fast.

Lots to do and work on, just trying to keep busy.

haha I only need to prime the last men at arms models for my bretonnians, the remainder still need to be painted fully, i.e. accent colors etc. Everything is currently primed in the correct base colors.

I've built out the Skaven and finished building the Lizardmen models I have, so I'm going to prep them for priming by stapling tape to a strip of cardboard with the sticky side up and then sticking the models to the cardboard/tape combination. With all the rain its going to be a little wet for priming, so I'm going to continue building the Empire Models and get them to a prime ready state.

I've been prepping the Mordian Iron Guard as well, by lining them up and sticking them to a similar tape setup, then I'll hit them all with ultramarine blue. This model was primed with the now out of production Army Painter Navy Blue Primer, I'm hoping the Ultramarine blue Army painter primer is at least close.

I need to glue and prep the bases of the Khador models I'm going to prime with the pure red:

Skalk! Hello thar! Thanks the CSM are some older models I need to revisit, I keep getting into a project and then take a flying leap into another one. Welcome to my little corner of Dakka!

With all the rain and humidity we're getting here in Houston I'm not going to be able to prime as easily as I normally would. Also, I want to prime a ridiculous amount of models all in one night, going to make this place stink with new primer smell. I'm also still on the fence with the color schemes I'm working out, so I'm just building and building more and more models. Today, I took a little time and put together some Empire Militia models in what I hope is the most Pirate looking of configurations!

15 fully built and am looking at completing the box set later tonight if work doesn't get into the way. I still have the pistoliers, the two cannons, greatswords, Knights and more to assemble and work out the color scheme.

Also, I'm reading up on the 6th Edition 40K rules just to keep things light.

Oh yeah.. and I have these Praetorians on the way, I'm seriously excited about these as I had the boxed set when it first came out and gave everything away in a crazy trade off that I'm still working to get back from friends who no longer play.

Thanks HAZZER!

I got a bit more work done today, damn rain and work keep getting in the way, but before I talk about that I want to touch on something:

Recently, at WarGames Con 2012 in Austin, Tx (which I had a bunch of friends attend) Someone did the unthinkable and stole from another gamer. I'm going to keep my response short: This is UNACCEPTABLE!

http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2012/07/brent-to-catch-thief-bells-most-wanted.html

Obviously, I could go on, but I would be screaming in caps across this page, if you read this, could you click on the BOLS link above and share it, so that maybe this guy could get his well painted thunderwolf model back. Thank you.

Tonights work consisted of more Empire Models being put together and realizing that while I've put the Skaven models from Island of Blood on their bases, I forgot to glue them down.

/facepalm i.e

So thats what I'm doing right now.

Then I need to glue some Warmachine Khador models together for our weekly Warmachine game night at Fat Ogre Games and Comics in the Woodlands, Tx

Pictures will be forthcoming soon!

Here's some shots of the 5th Edition Lizardmen:

Warriors:

Skinks with bows (which they no longer have according to the current codex, its all blowguns!):

The Empire Army build:

Cannons!

I love these bead bins from the craft section at my local Walmart, ($4.97). They hold an entire Empire Battalion Box set (Knights, Cannon, State Troops, Rifledudes), 1 more Cannon, 1 unit of Pistoliers, 1 unit of Militia, 1 Empire General set, 1 WitchHunter, 1 Empire Priest, 2 Empire Captain and assorted tools and bits! I've used them to help sort and organize all my armies and projects so I have an individual bin set for each army. You can also find them in the tackle box section for at least a dollar more:

The Skaven from the Island of Blood set:

I had set them all on top of cut out boxes with overturned sticky side up tape stuck to them, this helps with priming and rotating of the models, they don't fall over. I somehow put all of these models on their bases, but forgot to superglue them down. O.o

This is after spending some time tonight gluing them to their bases:

From the side:

And, here is a shot of the Lizardmen and the Skaven after being stuck to tape and glued to their bases. I'm still undecided whether I'm going to attach the shields to the warriors and then prime them or prime them and then prime the shields separately then attach. I think the leaving them off is the better plan at this time.

I pulled this part off another post and wanted to get it here so that I could easily find it later, I don't dip using minwax or army painter, I have brushed it on some of my models and it does make a shiny difference!

The Army Painter to Minwax aproximate equvalents are as follows.

Soft Tone = Pecan
Strong Tone = Antique Walnut
Dark Tone = Tudor

I used the army painter dark tone on the most recent of the space wolf models in that gallery

Apologies for the delayed responses, we've been dealing with a lot of weather issues out here in South Texas, lots of rain and flooding, but we're all good in the hood.

Took a little time to work more on my models since I'm not really getting time to prime and paint, 100% and more humidity with the rain involved tends to put a damper on the process, so I'm just building models and planning projects.

You might have noticed these models in a recent White Dwarf, I'll have to go get the # because I thought they were a brilliant, yet simple conversion I just had to try and duplicate them!

So I gathered my bits and threw together a test mini, you can see its a very simple conversion, the heads are from the Warhammer Fantasy Empire Pistoliers Set and you get about 15 heads, though not all the heads are helmeted with feathers, and the rest of the model is the Cadian Torso, legs and arms. Pretty simple and cool! I think there are more helmets heads with feathers in other Empire kits, but the pistoliers seem to have the most.

This is what the model would look like fully put together.

By building a test model you can see how everything will fit together and get an eye on what problem areas you might have with a brush. With the arms glued on and the gun across the chest I can see that I'll have issues reaching the chest portion of the armored vest. So, I'll remove the arms and prime those separately and glue them on at the end of the paint job.

I can assemble the torso and legs with the head, then I'd only have some issues around the front of the neck area of the model. I think this will be negligible, so I'm not going to worry about it at this point.

The models arms will need to be assigned before hand and then I'll need to keep track of who gets what arms, I'm undecided it I want to go generic lasgun or lasgun with bayonet. I don't like the separate hand to arm the lasguns have and will most likely align then glue those together first, if I don't pin the hand to the arm itself.

I'll prime all of these with P3 White Primer for ease in getting the similar white colors to the model in the picture, though with the acquisition of the Praetorians, I might not paint these guys up in the red/white color scheme depicted. I know I won't go with blue simply because the Mordian Iron Guard models will be blue. So I'm thinking maybe a Green or a Purple might go well with the black armor, white pants/gloves or I could go with a slightly darker red than I would with the Praetorians.

So many options! What do you think?

A Brief History of the Praetorian Imperial Guard Miniature Range

The Praetorian's were created for the 1997 UK Gamesday's Mega Display 'Massacre at Big Toof River'. The original models were based on Alan and Michael Perry's Mordian Iron Guard, for the most part simply head swaps though some additional models were also created including the Standard Bearer and Kneeling with Lasgun poses.

Due too significant interest in the models GW made the decision to release a platoon sized Limited Edition Box Set, this was followed by a blister release and their inclusion in the GW catalogue though some sources maintain this was an 'accident'.

The Praetorian range was finally dropped from production in late 2007 as part of GW's reorganization of their Mail Order and Back Catalog/Classic Miniatures service.

Occasionally rumors of new dress uniformed plastic Guardsmen from Gamesworkshop have surfaced, however these have all so far proved unfounded with no sign of further support for the regiment - especially given their total absence from the latest edition of the Imperial Guard codex. They have not been completely forgotten about at head office yet though, in summer 2009 a Praetorian novel by Richard Williams was considered by Black Library as part of their popular 'Imperial Guard' series of novels, though unfortunately at this time that project has been shelved in favor of another. This has now been published, and is titled 'Imperial Glory', the similarities to Praetorian's are noticeable however - reading it is recommended.

Brief History of the Praetorian Range

The Praetorian Imperial Guard were created for the 'Massacre At Big Toof River' Mega Display (Pictures : http://www.sodemons.com/gwmuseum/orksdrift/orksdrift.htm ) which appeared at UK Gamesday '97. The original models were created by Michael and Alan Perry and were based as is apparent on the Mordian Iron Guard, extreme interest lead to GW releasing a Limited Edition Box Set (Picture : http://www.solegends.com/citle/citle2000/misc/praetorianBox.htm ) which was later followed by a release in blisters.

Miniature Availability

The Praetorian miniature line is no longer available in the shops, they can no longer be ordered from mail order/online and are no longer part of the classics range:

Official Background Material

Taken from the Booklet which accompanied the Limited Edition Box Set:

The Praetorian XVII

From their initial planet fall as inexperienced colonists to the present day as hive-toughened warriors, the Praetorians have had to fight to survive. Over the centuries they have adopted a strict discipline which together with their talent for organisation of the smallest details (essential in a hive where even the air is rationed) serves them well on the battlefield. They detest slovenliness and disorder, and even at the height of battle will ensure that their uniforms are correctly buttoned and the buckles on their ammunitions pouches polished to a brilliant shine.

Taken from the Gamesday '97 Programme:

Massacre at Big Toof River

Montar VII is a minor dustball of a planet that orbits close to the second sun of the sparsely populated inhabited Montar system. The planet is an inhospitable place with little in the way of natural resources, and was largely ignored by the Imperium - until a drifting space hulk deposited the Bloody Hand Ork tribe on the planet and their leader, Warlord Bullgarg, claimed it for his own! The Bloody Hand tribe, or Blood Handz, as they are often called, are one of many Ork tribes that inhabit the Galaxy.
Until they came to Montar VII, the Bloody Hand tribe were nomadic raiders whose only home was their space hulk, and were not considered to be a major threat by the Imperium. What happened on Montar VII would cause the Imperium to re-evaluate this view.

A tribe usually includes Orks belonging to several of the major clans, and in this the Blood Handz are no exception, including Stormboyz, SnakeBites and the Kult of Speed within their ranks. However, the vast bulk of the boyz are content to call themselves simple "Blud 'andz", and leave it to others to dabble in all this whacky clan stuff. In order to show their allegiance to the tribe the Boyz paint their right fist and forearm blood red, in homage to Bullgarg's heroic deed.

Until he came to Montar VII Bullgarg had been content to lead a nomadic life of piracy and raiding, but his arrival on the planet brought a change. No longer would the simple pleasures of boarding actions and hit and run raids be enough - Bullgarg now wanted to found an Orky empire all of his own, starting on Montar VII! What exactly brought about this change no one was sure. Some said that Gork and Mork spoke to the Warlord as he slept, sending visions of the empire he would found, while others said that he'd started to believe his own stories of his exploits and had got too big for his boots. Whatever the reason, the result was the same - Bullgarg had come to the Montar system, and he wouldn't leave until he'd conquered every planet in it!

The Ork landing did not go unnoticed, and Planetary Lord Kinwa on Montar Prime urgently requested aid to deal with the Orks before they spread mayhem and destruction throughout the system. Although preliminary reports indicated that the Ork tribe was of no great strength, Lord Kinwa simply did not have the forces to deal with them. The total human and abhuman population of the entire Montar system numbered less than 700, and Lord Kinwa's planetary defence force consisted of an under strength platoon with only three heavy weapons and no armoured vehicles!

Fortunately for Lord Kinwa his appeal for help was received and acted upon very quickly, perhaps too quickly as things turned out. The Montar system lies in Segmentum Tempestus close to the planet of Tallarn. Imperial Guard forces in this sector were under the control of Lord Commander Sherdan, who had recently completed a successful campaign against a renegade Eldar pirate fleet. The campaign had been a long and bloody one, a running battle fought in half a dozen different systems and on more than 30 worlds, which had ended with the destruction of the Eldar renegades by the Imperial Navy. Reports of this final battle were coming in when Sherdan received the news of the Ork invasion of Montar VII, and it may be t hat his elation over the victory against the renegade Eldar clouded his judgement about how he would deal with Warlord Bullgarg.

Whatever the reason, Sherdan trusted the preliminary reconnaissance reports and decided to despatch a small force to deal with the Orks as quickly as possible. The troops that he sent were the veterans of the campaign against the Dark Eldar, the 24th Praetorians.

Praetoria is a heavily populated Hive World that lies in a system close to the Imperial naval base at Bakka. The overpopulated Hive-Cities of Praetoria are renowned for their squalor and degradation, and produce some of the toughest gangers on any of the hive worlds in the Imperium. This vast population work as little more than slave-labour in the huge factory complexes of Praetoria, producing the goods that have made the planet (and its rulers) one of the richest in the Imperium, with a huge fleet of merchant craft that trade all over the Segmentum and beyond.

Imperial Guard regiments raised on Praetoria are renowned for their iron discipline and bravery, even in the face of the most overwhelming odds. The planetary lords of Praetoria hold it is only through fearsome training and draconian punishments for the most minor infringements that the hive-toughened inhabitants of their planet can be made to follow orders and do as they are told. Whatever one's views on the training methods used, they seem to work, producing troops that are as ferocious on the attack as they are determined in defence.

The 24th Praetorians had lived up well to the traditions of the fighting reputation of their home world, but had suffered very heavy casualties in so doing. Of the 1500 troops that had left Praetoria only about 300 now remained. More importantly, all of the regiment's senior officers had been killed. The most senior officer left alive, and acting commander of the regiment, was 21 year old Captain Gliene of C Company
To overcome these deficiencies for the campaign against Warlord Bullgarg, the 24th was hastily reinforced with the survivors of the 135th Tallarn Regiment, which had been all but destroyed in the battles against the Eldar renegades. Crucially the commander of the Tallarns, Colonel Al' Ter-Ay, was put in overall command of the reinforced 24th Praetorians, even though the bulk of the troops in the regiment were Praetorians. It was a command structure that was to have disastrous consequences for the regiment.

The 24th was despatched immediately to Montar VII with orders from Lord Sherdan to act quickly to eliminate the Ork threat to the system. Information was still sketchy about the size and strength of the Ork tribe, but the common consensus was that they were fairly few in numbers, and lacking in any 'eavy support' in the form of Gargants or Battle Fortresses. Ork Blood Axe mercenaries, hired as scouts for the Regiment during the campaign, confirmed that although they'd never actually met Warlord Bullgarg, everybody knew he was "a git wiv a big mouth wot'll never amount to anyfing".

When the 24th made planetfall on Montar VII Colonel Al' Ter-Ay lost no time in moving against the Orks. Sub-orbital spy-craft had pinpointed the Ork camp at a location on the Big Toof River. Ork numbers were still unknown, the pall of smog hanging over the settlement making it impossible for the Imperial spy-craft to get any readings on Ork numbers, but worryingly there were signs that the Orks were in the process of constructing Gargants and other large engines of war.

Colonel Al' Ter-Ay determined to act swiftly, as instructed in his orders from Lord Sherdan, but against the advice of Captain Gliene who suggested using his company's Blood Axes to scout the Ork camp. Al' Ter-Ay didn't trust the Blood Axes one bit, especially in an operation against their own kind, and in any case his orders specifically instructed him to act "with extreme prejudice", and this he was determined to do. Less than 24 hours after arriving on the planet the 24th Praetorians moved against the Orks.

Al' Ter-Ay split the regiment into three columns. The first of these (Force Kaz-Ter) consisted of the Tallarn Rough Rider companies and all of the Tallarn Tank Companies, and was commanded by Captain Am' Kaz-Ter of Tallarn. The second column (Force Gliene) consisted of Company C of the 24th Praetorians. The third column (Force Ter-Ay) was commanded Al' Ter-Ay himself and consisted of Company A and all of the regiment's support weapons. \par Al-Ter-Ay's plan was to use Force Kaz-Ter to smash into the Ork camp in a devastating surprise attack. As the Imperial tanks piled into the Orks, Force Gliene (all of which were mounted in fast-moving Chimeras) would sweep round the Ork camp, blocking off the Orks' retreat and cutting down those that tried to escape. By the time that Al' Ter-Ay and the rest of the regiment's slower-moving troops a rrived, all that remained would be to mop up. It was not a bad plan, but it relied on the Orks being too weak to fight back effectively against Force Kaz-Ter. Fatally for the Imperial troops, this was not going to be the case.

As the Imperial troops crested the hills that overlooked the Ork camp, Al' Ter-Ay's plan had already started to fall apart. Force Kaz-Ter had pulled ahead of the rest of the regiment, and started to cross the Big Toof river before Force Gliene could get into position. Captain Am'Kaz' Ter was a brilliant but headstrong commander, who had proved his bravery, if not his common sense, in many battles. Always before when he took a gamble his luck paid off. But as the Leman Russ tanks spearheading his attack crossed the Big Toof River, Kaz-Ter's luck finally ran out...

Suddenly from out of the Ork camp there poured dozens of Snakebite Boarboyz, closely followed by hundreds of Ork warriors and their smaller Gretchin cousins. Super-heavy weapon batteries mounted in the watch towers of the Ork t own burst into action and started blasting away at the surprised Imperial troops. And then, as this torrent of green-skinned destruction smashed Force Kaz-Ter's front, the reeling Guardsmen were hit by an even heavier volume of fire from the rear. As tank s exploded and men died, the Guardsmen stared in horror and disbelief as the Gargant they had believed still under construction lumbered over the horizon, flanked on either side by huge battle fortresses bristling with blazing guns, and supported by Ork Fighta-Bommerz overhead.

Within moments Captain Kaz-Ter was dead, while the panic-stricken survivors of the force that he had led did what they could to escape. Many of the Tallarn Rough Riders attacked to the column survived the initial bombardment, and they now tried to escape back over the Big Toof River and away from the Ork settlement. Unfortunately the steep banks on the far side of the river slowed their escape, and within moments the pursuing Snakebite Boarboyz of the Blood Handz tribe caught up with them. The result was a massacre. As was quickly becoming clear, the Imperial force had walked into an ambush masterminded by Warlord Bullgarg, whose scouts had let him know about the arrival of the Regiment from the moment they had landed on the planet. Bullgarg's ambush was hardly original or even well executed, but when combined with Al'Ter-Ay's fatally flawed plan it lead to a disaster for the 24th Praetorians. It is estimated that within 3 minutes of the trap being sprung Force Kaz-Ter had suffered 85% casualties. But the disaster was not over yet, for above the river valley Force Gliene was also under attack...

From the bluff overlooking the river, Captain Gliene could do little to help his comrades below, for almost at the same moment that Kaz-Ter cam e under attack, his company had been ambushed by a huge force of Ork buggies. The Orks had appeared from nowhere quickly surrounding the Praetorians and forcing them from their Chimeras. Gliene formed the vehicles into a circle, from behind which the grim red-coated soldiers under his command prepared to sell their lives as dearly as possible. All knew that they were doomed, for having dealt with Force Kaz-Ter, the hundreds of Ork Warriors and the huge war engines that accompanied them were turning their attention to "da 'umies dat were left on da hill".

As the Orks swarmed up the hill the Praetorians hit them with volley after volley of tightly controlled lasgun fire, while the multi-lasers of the Chimeras cut bloody swathes through the Ork ranks. Soon the slopes around the Guardsmen were surrounded by hundreds of Ork corpses and blazing buggies. But still the Orks kept on coming, supported by withering fire from the Gargant and Battle fortresses. Yelling their guttural battle-cries and with a complete disregard for their own safety that impressed even the battle-hardened warriors from the Hives of Praetoria, the Ork warriors hurled themselves again and again at the rapidly shrinking circle of Guardsmen, until, finally, there were no humans left alive.

With in an hour of first seeing the Ork camp, every single member of Forces Kaz-Ter and Force Gliene, with the exception of one of Company C's Blood Axe mercenaries, was dead. Colonel Ter-Ay had no option but to pull back in the face of the victorious Ork army . Fortunately for the troops under his command the Orks' pursuit was desultory at best - the Orks were too busy celebrating their victory to be bothered with chasing the few beaten survivors - and they were able to escape more or less unscathed. Colonel Te r-Ay was never to be given an independent command again. He died 10 years later making a lone attack on a Tyranid Dominatrix. It is said his last words were "Let me go to my fate brothers... I must have peace from the ghosts that haunt me."

Warlord Bullgarg went on to found a successful Ork empire in the Montar system, but then disappeared along with most of his followers on board an Ork space hulk. It was assumed that the craft was destroyed in the Warp, but no one can be certain. Who knows, may be one da y Bullgarg and the Blood Handz may return to carve out a new empire.

Lord Sherdan recovered from the setback and went on to reconquer the Montar system from the Orks that had remained after Bullgarg had left. In the forefront of the campaign was the newly raised 24th Praetorian Regiment.

Rank and fire!

Briancj, Yes! I'm aware of Col.Gravis site CuriousConstructs and Victoria Lambs excellent conversions and solo mini's, she's actually selling her beautiful Praetorian Army! There are a few other companies that make Pith helmet heads and I could simply cut the heads off Mordian Iron Guard models and replace them with Pith helmets to make Praetorians.

I did some more work on the Cadian / Empire Pistolier Conversion project:

Spent some time getting a count and lining up models, trimming mold lines and lining everything up, most of the time was really spent talking with the rest of the gamers and hobbyists at Fat Ogre Games

Got a few to the ready to glue and prime phase, the arms will be primed separately so that I can reach the entire model. I'm still debating the color scheme, whether I go bright red and white or go with a purple or some other combination.

Set up some of the Fenris IG model conversions to prime with the Army Painter Leather brown to get them closer to a done state. These are a mix of Catachan, Chaos Marrauders, Space Wolf and even some Vampire Counts pieces. I wanted a unique look to an alternate IG force.

And, just cause I know y'all have been wondering how the Mordian Iron Guard are coming along:

I purchased some Army Painter Ultramarine Blue colored Primer to help speed this process along, so I needed to prep and line up the models. To do this I usually use masking tape or painters tape folded over so the sticky side is up, this helps to keep the models in place while I prime them, this way they don't fall over.

You can see that I've got several Commissars, probably too many, so I'll paint them up since they're essentially Mordians that have been Promoted. The powerfist commissar in the front center is the only model to survive from the Praetorian Box set. He is the Praetorian Commissar model.

You might see a Col Stracken and a Marbo in the mix as well as some Ratling Snipers showed up in my boxes of bits

I couldn't find the masking tape so I used duct tape, that stuff is awesome! but don't use it for masking on models.

Here's my selection of Army Painter Color Primers:

And this is what the table in the garage looks like:

The plan currently is for the Army Painter colors to Prime specific models:

Alien Purple: Lizard men and Skinks models
Leather Brown: Fenris IG, Mordian horses and Skaven models, Bretonnian, Empire, Warmachine Mercenary models
Ultramarine Blue: Mordian Iron Guard models
Pure Red: Cadian/Empire IG conversion, Fleet Officer & Master of Ordinance, Warmachine Khador models

I might do the Skinks in the Pure Red, to give the Lizardmen army some separate colors.

So that will be the main part of the color schemes, these should help me build up the base colors on these models fairly quickly. I still have to build some more of the Cadian/Empire models, I have a bunch of Catachan bits and a few other units from other armies that I could put together and prime just to have them built.

Its been hit or miss due to the humidity and the rain as far as getting a good time to prime these, but I'm thinking soon I'll not have much left to build and will need to paint, paint, paint some more!

By then other models will most likely have arrived!

I promise I don't have an addiction, lol and that I will actually play with these models in games!

I do have a lot of models! Those Praetorians are staying with me!

I just sprayed 200 Mordian Iron Guard in about 20min, pictures will be coming soon!

The Mordians have a lot of detail work, so it will take some time to get them up to tabletop quality and I'm not happy with the color of the ultramarine blue army painter, I thought it would be more like their old Navy Blue

Oh I know, I just traded one color layering system for another one by using the colored primers. I was just hoping for a shorter timeframe to done than a shift in that timeframe. At least this will make the blues easier to paint, lol.

So this is what I worked on last night and this morning:

Empire Pistolier head to Cadian torso build, I don't have enough heads with feathers to do a full 20 troops, so 3 of them will not have feathers.. right now.. lol.

The plan is to prime them white, then use red on the coat, black on the armor and edge the armor with elf flesh to burnished gold. Then shade the model with Army painter soft tone. So it should look fairly nice when done.

Next step is to assemble the arm sets for each model and then prime them white as well.

I'd also pulled out the Army Painter Leather brown on the Fenris IG concept models as well as the Skaven and some of the Bretonnian Men at Arms, the mounts for the Yeomen and the mounts for the Mordian Iron Guard.

Fenris IG:

Missionary and Astropath:

Skaven Island of Blood models:

Mordian Iron Guard!
I primed these previously using P3 White Primer, but the amount of models staring at me kept from approaching them again and again. I'd been offered the services of a friends air brush, but with my schedule (I'm nocturnal) and him being across town it wasn't looking like it was going to happen. I'd previously used Army Painter Navy Blue to base coat my Warmachine Cygnar models and it came out beautifully. Unfortunately for me, they've discontinued their Navy Blue. The closest color was Ultramarine Blue, so I decided to try that:

Oh yeah and maybe an orc slipped into the priming session..

This is pretty much what the tables in the garage look like with all the models and a couple of fans blowing to help dry and get the smell of primer out of the room.

As you can see, there is a lot on my painting table.

Yes indeed! I've got a lot more to build up too!

Recently someone asked, "where did you get your mordian's?"

Several places actually
The first set of 50-60 models came in to my old game store in Los Angeles as a store trade in, a gamer had passed away and his brother was cleaning out his garage, he didn't want all the stuff so he brought them to the store and we all divided things up and donated monies to help out.

I then ordered a few squads through that store via GW's collector series

A friend advised me I should start a dakka blog to detail the build and while on Dakka I did a search in the swap shop, found an old posting for a guy with some Mordians, those had sold, but he had another 72 he was looking to offload, so I bought those

I've since ordered more straight from GW or purchased through sites like ebay or bartertown.

You can get them brand new from GW.

I now have a little more than 200 Mordian Iron Guard and I'm still on the lookout for a few key models, some more missile launcher models and the extremely rare Plasma rifle model.

Also, can you do a side-by-side comparison of a Perry Bros horse next to a standard GW horse?
Thanks!

Yes! I can do that since I've got a High Elf Horse, a Perry Horse, a Bretonnian Knight and Yeoman horse as well as an Empire Knight horse, should be able to give you a couple of nice shots for size comparison.

Yes! Mordians and Praetorians had a plasma rifle model, its extremely rare and wasn't listed in the catalogs!

Now, they're extremely rare and so you have to do something like what I've done or what this guy has done to convert up plasma rifles for Mordians or Praetorians.

And I really like this guys conversions:

I've got Praetorians on the brain and there are several ways to make those possible:

Step 1: Buy Mordian Iron Guard from GamesWorkshops Collectors line.
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/armySubUnitCats.jsp?catId=cat1490651&rootCatGameStyle=

Step 2: Buy Pith Helmets from any one of the following:

http://www.maxmini.eu/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=12&products_id=177

http://victoriaminiatures.highwire.com/product/pith-helmet-heads

Step 3: Cut the heads off the Mordian Iron Guard, smooth out cut lines, then drill with a pin vise into both the head and the base of the neck.

Step 4: Glue/GS Pith Helmet head onto Mordian Iron Guard model.

Step 5: Done.

Comparing the size of a Perry Miniatures French Cavalry mount, this is the brown model with the saddle, the rest of the horses are games workshop mounts from various fantasy sets.

Note: The Perry brothers used to work for Games Workshop and modeled a lot of their miniatures. I'm not surprised their kits tend to fit well with the GW products

Mordian Iron Guard Rough Rider Conversion using the mounts from Perry Miniatures French Heavy Cavalry and Tank Commander & Cadian officer heads. All the horses go together no matter which two halves of the body type you choose. There is one exception and that horse looks a little different than the others. There are enough bodies to create more than 14 bodies. The 40K heads and the neck slot have to be reworked/cut/trimmed down so that the head will sit on the body. The right arm from the sprue is holding a sword, so I'll find a lance or piece of pipe, trim that out and create rough riders. I might mount a lasgun or similar weapon to the saddle or gear on the horse to complete the image.

Received and cataloged the new Praetorian models last night

I received these troops from 1 trade, I believe these are made by a recaster, i.e. someone who has made a mold from old Praetorian models and then made new ones from that mold.

And these Praetorians from a different trade, which are part of the original games day 1997 Battle for Big Toof river boxed set which is shown below.

More pics are located in my Dakka Gallery here:

Are you referencing the horses or the Praetorians Leohart?

Briancj wrote:The Perry Bros horses are, clearly, juuuuust slightly undersized. Slightly. But, I think for the purposes of my Praetorian Cavalry from Col Gravis, they'll be fine. I'll pick some up and a trial.

Thank you, 'rose for the pictures!

PS: Where the HELL are you getting all the money to buy things like the Praetorian BOX SET? Note to self, drive to Houston, take Praetorians, leave.

Your welcome! Glad to help! I think the Perry stuff is great for the IG models and I hope you enjoy them!

If you do decide to come to Houston be sure to bring some Steak and dark beer. Oh and good luck.

I actually got a really good deal on the Praetorians through both BarterTown and DakkaDakka, 92acclude had some extra Praetorians and was looking to offload them, I sent him a message both here and on BarterTown, we worked out a great well communicated trade and I had seen/read in his positive reviews a positive post by a buddy of mine that uses Bartertown a lot, so I felt comfortable with the trade. It was great! He packaged everything so carefully it was awesome.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/460511.page

Then, I found on ebay a 'recaster' of Praetorians. He relists the same squad every week to two weeks using the same picture, I found this out by seeing another posting by him with the same image and then checking out his feedback score and looking through it and finding multiple sales for the same item.

I've thought about contacting him directly to work out a deal for a large volume of models with basic lasguns. I have another resource for Praetorians, but I don't want to post it here til I have a chance to get another cash infusion and clean him out.

Check out some of the skirmish stuff for Necromunda or something similar my buddy Jeremy & Scott have worked on the last couple months. These guys are out of Aero Hobbies & Games in Santa Monica, my old game store out there.
http://quiznation.com/wp/

I did some more work on the Empire Pistolier Head / Cadian Conversion, took some time to line up the lasgun arms and glue them together separately. I'm doing this so that I can access the torso when I paint the model. That and its easier to assemble the arms first and then glue them to the model. Additionally, I drilled with a pinvise into the hand a forearm of the left arm of the model and pinned it together. This helped keep the arm and hand together while I moved to the next set of arms.

I also spent yesterday afternoon working on an 1850 point Space Wolves list, which I need to type up and upload into Army Builder. It will contain the following models:
Rune Priest
Two units of Long Fangs
2 Grey Hunter packs 10 models
1 Grey Hunter pack 9 models
1 Wolf Scout pack 8 models 8 Sniper rifles
3 Rhinos Dedicated to the Grey Hunters

Wolf Lord with 5 Thunder Wolf Cavalry for Shenanigans

All that should be pretty decent on the battlefield and cause my opponent to split his forces to deal with several serious threats.

I don't have any experience with battle scribe and most tournaments prefer an Army Builder format. I realize that I will be playing for fun and to learn this new version of the game for awhile, but I'd like to use a format that is similar when learning.

The Praetorians may be narrower than the current day IG models which are more dynamic, yet they're taller than my Mordian Iron Guard models simply due to the pith helmet head being taller. I know you've seen my Mordian Iron Guard so you should know they're a fairly decent size.

I was a little dissapointed with GW Tomball today, I went there at 5:32 p.m. and it was closed, waited til 6 and more than 10 people showed up trying to get in, turned away disapointed.

I need to fix up my models for the SW list and then I can get back to the Mordians.
